How to Easily Apply Iron-on Patches to Your Clothes

You may not think to use them often, but patches can provide a quick way to upgrade clothing items like a jacket, jeans or hat. Plus, they can be a fun way to add flair to something more utilitarian, like a child’s backpack or a work uniform. And what’s great is, you don’t need to be well versed in sewing to get the job done thanks to iron-on patches, which are easy to work with.

When purchasing, patches are labeled as either sew-on or iron on, explains fashion designer Maddie Iverson of O’Field Apparel. But if you’ve misplaced the packaging, the most obvious way to tell which method is needed to install a patch is to look at the back of it. “If there is an adhesive, sticky, tacky or filmy layer on the back, then the patch is likely an iron on patch. If a patch back is clear of any additional layers, and it has a felt or fabric back, or you can see the embroidery clearly, then the patch needs to be sewed,” says Iverson.

If you’re working with the former, below, we’re breaking down an easy way to iron-on patches.

But first, what kind of material do iron-on patches adhere to?

You can iron patches onto a wide range of fabrics, including polyester, denim and more, but natural materials like cotton provide the best blank canvas. Keep in mind: Some materials, like leather or heat-sensitive synthetics, are prone to scorching and heat damage, so it’s best to choose sew-on patches for any items with this type of more delicate construction.

How to iron on patches:

Ready to get started? Here’s a quick step-by-step:

  1. Prep. First make sure that the backing of the patch is clear of any debris such as hairs, fuzz, lint or dirt. Next, you need to know what kind of fabric you are ironing the patch onto.
  2. Choose the right temperature. If you’re putting a patch on apparel — jeans or a shirt, for example — follow the iron setting mentioned on the care tag. If there is no care tag, it’s better to be safe than sorry, so use a lower heat, but keep the iron on the patch long enough for the adhesive back to melt and fuse with the fabric. We also recommend covering the patch with a piece of fabric or parchment paper before ironing so you don’t burn it.
  3. Iron on. Depending on the size of the patch, try to use just the tip of the iron while adding on the patch. Start from the middle of the patch to act as an anchor and move out from there. Keep in mind that the adhesive backing on an iron-on patch needs to fully melt to then bond onto the fabric.
  4. Let it rest. Once you are sure that the adhesive has bonded, take the iron off of the patch, and let your fabric and patch rest and cool down a bit. After about 5 to 10 minutes, you can lift the fabric vertically and see if there are any spots where the patch hasn’t fully fused. If necessary, repeat the process until the patch is fully bonded.

What’s the best iron temperature to use to iron-on patches?

In general, delicate fibers, like polyester, use lower heat and heavier duty and more durable fibers like wool, cotton and linen can withstand a higher heat, says Iverson. Denim jeans and jackets, as well as most backpacks, can also tolerate higher heat. Most irons have fiber settings that are safe to follow when selecting the best temperature to iron on a patch.

No matter what level of heat you’re using, never use the steam setting to iron on patches—the water prevents proper bonding. Always use a dry iron to adhere patches.

Why isn’t my iron-on patch sticking?

If your iron-on patch isn’t working, your iron probably isn’t hot enough, says Iverson. “Be sure to give your iron a few minutes to fully warm up to your selected setting before using it.” And if you’re attaching the patch onto a delicate fabric, slowly ramp up the iron’s heat and make sure to only use the tip of the iron and let it sit on the patch long enough for the heat to reach the adhesive, so it melts and bonds. Proceed carefully on delicate fabrics to keep from melting or damaging them.

Pro-tip: If you notice the adhesive doesn’t hold up over time and your patch starts to peel around the edges, you can reattach by using fabric glue or hand sewing just the portion that is peeling.

Can you iron on patches with a hair straightener?

“As long as the heat is hot enough to melt the adhesive onto another garment or fabric, any kind of iron will work,” says Iverson. However, there are a few things you need to keep in mind if you’re going to use a straightener notes Lexie Sachs, executive director of the Textiles, Paper & Apparel Lab in the Good Housekeeping Institute:

  1. It may be difficult to maneuver/reach certain parts of the garment.
  2. A used hair iron has lots of oils and product on it. So if your iron is not clean, it could soil both the patch and/or your garment.
  3. You have to be careful to heat just the patch, not the fabric itself.

6 Items of Clothing That Will Take You Anywhere

The standard capsule wardrobe normally consists of around 37 items. I’ve been thinking about it, though, and I reckon I could get by on just 6 – assuming I didn’t have to deal with any extremes of weather, or unexpected excursions requiring specialist clothing, obviously!

Here are my six essentials – and bear in mind that this is a purely personal list, so the usual caveats apply: these won’t work for everyone, and your own list might be totally different! (And I’d love to hear what you’d put on it, if so!)

// THE CLASSIC TRENCH

Yeah, yeah, I can hear you yawning from here! I always feel like I should apologise for liking so many of the classics, because it obviously makes me as basic as it’s possible to be, but I’m not going to apologise, because, well, I AM pretty basics, really, and I can’t help the fact that I love the classic look. I actually own more trenchcoats than is really reasonable, but that’s because I really love them: no, they may not be a “wardrobe essential” for everyone, but they make me feel instantly put-together, and I love the way they can be dressed up or down, as required. The style above is from Spartoo, who have tons of different colours in stock, if the classic beige /camel doesn’t work for you.

// THE PENCIL DRESS

I’m not calling this an LBD, because although the dress pictured is, indeed, a little black dress, I’d actually prefer a green or white one – I just couldn’t find the right image! I’ve more or less lived in stretchy pencil dresses this year: as with the trench, they can be dressed up or down depending on how you style them, and they’re as comfortable as jeans – maybe even more so, actually. Speaking of jeans, though…

// THE PERFECT BLUE JEANS

When I’m not wearing a pencil dress, you’ll normally find me in jeans. They just work for my lifestyle, and I always feel good in them, so who cares if they’re one of those items some people like to turn their nose up at? Not me …

// THE BRETON TOP

My love of a stripe top is so well-documented at this point that there’s absolutely no point in adding to that, so suffice to say that I literally – LITERALLY – couldn’t live without one. Or, you know, 20.

// THE SILK CAMI

Most of my camisole tops aren’t actually silk, but you get the idea. These instantly dress up jeans and skirts, and have that effortlessly stylish look about them: what’s not to love?

// THE POINTED STILETTO

If I had to choose just one style of shoe to wear for the rest of my life, it would be the pointed stiletto. Of course, I WOULD need a pair in every colour imaginable, but it still counts as one item, right?

So, tell me: what are your wardrobe essentials?

Five fragrances you need for Spring! – Latest In Beauty Blog

With temperatures slowly rising to an acceptable level to be outside, Spring is very much lurking around the corner – all rejoice! Spring, for me (Jem, Blog Editor) has always been the season where I update everything; my wardrobe, my hair, my makeup bag and of course, my scent. The new season is the perfect time to swap out your heavier winter blends for something lighter and fresher. Whether you gravitate towards floral, fresh, fruity or muskier scents, fragrances will always hold the power to evoke different feelings and memories. Thankfully, there are a whole host of beautiful spring fragrances for the new season, each one ideal for creating new olfactory memories and lasting impressions. In celebration of National Fragrance Week, here are five of my favourites…

JIMMY CHOO BLOSSOM

Harmoniously combining floral and fruity notes, Jimmy Choo Parfums’ Blossom will breathe new life into your fragrance collection ready for spring. Inspired by a fruity cocktail, this sparkling scent opens with zesty berries and citrus, followed by warming floral notes of rose and sweet pea before transforming into a more demure, delicate concoction. Musk and sandalwood form the base for a seductive finishing touch.

GLOSSIER YOU

Every time I wear this fragrance, I receive so many compliments – more than with any other fragrance I own. You know when someone just smells amazing, but you can’t work out what they’re wearing? It’s probably this. You’ll find that You makes a great first impression and smells even better as the day goes on. Each note melts in with your skin, chosen and balanced to allow the juice to be both long-lasting and true to how it smells at the beginning without changing as it dries down. Creamy, sparkling, clean and warm. That’s Glossier’s You.

COACH FLORAL

A floral fruity scent, both modern and joyful, Coach’s Floral fragrance is inspired by a luminous Spring day wandering in an American prairie. Comprising top notes of pineapple sorbet and citrus notes, followed by a floral heart of peony and Arabian jasmine, this scent is sure to create a sparkling impression. The dry down reveals the enveloping and elegant crystal musks and creamy wood base, while the bottle is beautifully adorned with a soft pink floral hangtag, reminiscent of the brand’s Tea Rose flower appliqués. The turn lock and metal tag have been redressed in rose gold for a feminine look – my fragrance tray has never looked so good.

ELIE SAAB GIRL OF NOW

This distinctive gourmand floral Girl of Now Eau de Parfum has been inspired by Lebanese delights; opening with roasted pistachio and sparkling pear before leading to a heart of essence of bitter almond and orange blossom absolute. Tonka bean and almond milk blended together leaves a lingering almond trail while patchouli reinforces the ultimate ELIE SAAB signature.

MARC JACOBS DAISY DREAM TWINKLE

I’ve always loved the Marc Jacobs Daisy fragrance family, and this new limited edition is a welcome addition to my fragrance shelf. Inspired by a shimmering oasis where the sun dazzles and water glistens, Daisy Dream Marc Jacobs Twinkle Edition is a sparkling reinterpretation of the classic Daisy Dream perfume for women. Sunny and spirited, Twinkle transports you to a beautiful place with endless blue skies, sparkling sunshine and flowers blooming everywhere. This fruity, floral fragrance opens with bursts of black cherry and fresh white floral that mingle together to evoke a sense of Springtime freshness. At the base, whipped berry mousse creates a mouthwatering scent that lingers on the skin as it dries.

Meghan Markle Takes a Page Out of Kate Middleton's Book With Latest Outfit

Get ready for another case of closet envy. Meghan Markle made a public appearance for International Women’s Day this morning with her fiancé Prince Harry, and her ensemble belongs in the dictionary under the word “chic.”

The future royal wore a $300 J.Crew two-tone wool-blend coat (now sold out of course) with Alexander Wang trousers, a jumper by All Saints, and a black Altuzarra handbag.

The former actress looked like the ultimate role model she is when greeting the “Stemettes,” a Birmingham-based group that encourages young women to pursue careers in STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math).

Meghan’s sleek outfit blends with the polished wardrobe she’s recently shown off. This is a woman who can appreciate a pair of perfectly tailored pants, but her navy trench brought to mind another royal’s signature style. Her future sister-in-law Kate Middleton has also sported a lot of blue outerwear lately, including this bespoke coat from Jenny Packham.

The Duchess of Cambridge wore this ensemble with similar white trim just last week while visiting the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists in London.

Back in January, she stepped out in another navy coat, this time from the British brand Hobbs, for a day with Place2Be, a charity that supports children and families’ mental health.

While it’s impossible to know for sure, the tailored fit and classic navy hue might have inspired Meghan to follow suit. Of course, you don’t need a royal budget to take some inspiration from these fashion icons.

This navy trench from Nordstrom is current on sale for $180:

This isn’t the first time the royal ladies have both worn blue. They showed up at the first annual Royal Foundation Forum last week in the same hue, but each stayed true to their equally beautiful — and distinct — styles.

4 Bras Every Woman Should Own

The title of this post is probably just a little bit optimistic: just as there’s no such thing as a “one size/style fits all” solution for clothing, different women will obviously have different requirements for their lingerie, too.

Rather than this being a guide to the bras EVERY women should own, then, let’s just think of it as a guide to the bras that are useful to have in your collection, OK? Good outfits, after all, start with good lingerie, so here are four of the bras I wouldn’t want to be without…

// THE T-SHIRT BRA

black t-shirt bra

The t-shirt bra is probably one of the simplest styles out there, and, as the name suggests, its designed to be worn under a t-shirt – or any other close-fitting item of clothing you don’t want to look lumpy due to an excess of lace, or other embellishments. This is probably the one style I couldn’t live without: I wear a lot of t-shirts/tanks, and I find that fancier bras normally look really visible underneath them, thanks to all of the lace and bows. The  t-shirt style, on the other hand, is basically the bra equivalent of the no VPL knicker: no, it’s not particularly sexy (especially in my preferred shade of “nude” – chosen purely so it doesn’t show through my top), but damn, is it ever useful.

// THE STRAPLESS BRA

2-pack strapless bras

[buy here]

If, like me, you tend to wear a lot of bardot tops, or other off-the-shoulder styles, a strapless bra is definitely a good investment. These can be a little tricky to wear, and a lot of the cheaper versions will end up just slipping down: for that reason, I sometimes find a bandeau style bra a better option.

// THE MULTIWAY BRA

download

[buy here]

For all of those other tricky dresses and tops, a multiway bra is your BFF. These have straps which can be switched around and worn in a variety of different ways, so they’ll work with halternecks, strapless dresses – you name it. If you tend to wear a lot of plunging necklines, however, you might also need…

// THE PLUNGE BRA

plunge bra

[buy here]

I actually DON’T wear a lot of plunging necklines, but I have the kind of bodyshape that means that even a basic v-neck can look borderline indecent on me, making one of these a good idea, unless I want to be constantly flashing my undies at everyone I meet!

So! Those are my four essentials: what are yours?

Blogger of the Month: The Floral Republic – Latest In Beauty Blog

At Latest in Beauty, there’s nothing we enjoy more than spending our lunch hour scrolling through our favourite blogs and all of the posts, photos and feedback on our Build-Your-Own beauty box selection. It’s so exciting for us when bloggers and influencers share their must-have Latest in Beauty discoveries, therefore each month we like to chat to one of them right here on the blog. This month we caught up with Natalie from The Floral Republic.

Q

How do you make your blog stand out?

A

Ooh this is a tricky one. I don’t think my blog necessarily does stand out as I really just do it as a hobby, but I write entirely for myself and do what I want to do rather than trying to keep up with beauty trends which keeps it fun and takes the stress out! I keep my reviews honest and try to be informative as possible. Although I started my blog predominantly to write about beauty, I’ve found some of my most popular books are more lifestyle-based, such as book recommendations and food reviews.

Q

Your go to make-up look is…

A

I like to keep it nice and simple for my daily look. Radiant skin is a must so I mix Pixi Glow Booster with my base (I love L’Oréal True Match Foundation and Sleek Life Proof Foundation) then add a bit of contour with the Rimmel Sculpting Palette. I never go without blusher so I pop on some Bourjois Little Round Pot Blush then finish off with a tinted pink lip balm. Most of the colours in my makeup bag are pink!

Q

If you could curate your own beauty box, what would it contain and why?

A

As I’m always on the go and having to top up my makeup for events I usually keep a spare makeup bag in my handbag or desk drawer with some essentials in. If I made my own beauty box it would need to contain some of my holy grail products like: Stila Convertible Colour, Clinique Chubby Stuck, Beautyblender, Carmex Original Pot lip balm, Benefit They’re Real Mascara and Sleek Solstice Highlighter Palette

Q

If you could design a beauty collection, what would it be like?

A

I’m a sucker for Instagram-worthy packaging (like Paul & Joe and Benefit) and love multi-tasking products so I’d create a range of palettes with everything you need for day and night makeup looks. Everyone jokes about how much I wear pinks and florals so it would need to follow that theme!

Q

Hidden gem in your beauty stash is…

A

Coconut oil – I use it for everything; taking off my makeup, facial moisturiser, body moisturiser, hair mask – it’s so simple but I love it! I always keep a miniature tub with me when I’m travelling.

Q

What’s your signature scent?

A

I don’t wear a lot of perfume but I wear Soap & Glory’s Original Pink body spray every day, it is super sweet and one of my all time favourites.

Q

The blogger/YouTuber made me buy it:

A

Swatch stencils! These are what have been missing from my beauty blogging game for so long and I can’t believe I never knew about them before. I have always been terrible at swatching makeup (shaky hands!) so stopped bothering but I’m now so excited to be able to swatch perfect rectangle shapes of lipstick and eyeshadow… it’s the simple things!

Q

Favourite discovery from Latest in Beauty?

A

I got a miniature bottle of The Body Shop Oils of Life Facial Oil and I love it. I’m really trying to prevent ageing at the moment and this oil is so great at hydrating and revitalising my skin – I will definitely be purchasing the full size version.

Q

Smokey eye or bold lip?

A

I love treating myself to a massage or spa day, this is probably the ultimate thing for me to do on my own and can spend all day lounging by a pool reading a book. When I can’t afford that luxury I love nothing more than a pamper night at home – pop on a hair mask, run a bath with a Lush bath bomb, use a hydrating sheet mask and then smother myself in body butter afterwards.

Check out Natalie’s blog and get all the inspiration from her latest selections before creating your own box! Don’t forget to share the love using #LoveLiB!

Katy Perry Wore the Most Naked Dress of Oscar Night

Katy Perry made an excellent bid for the most naked dress of Oscar night at the Entertainment Studios Oscar Gala sponsored by Heineken. Perry wore Versace to the event, which served as a viewing party and later, concert. Donatella Versace herself praised Perry’s look on her Instagram. “You look fantastic Katy,” she wrote.

The dress appeared be beaded, with some darker, accentuating detail along the bodice. Perry flaunted the gown’s every angle for photographers, along with her very platinum pixie:

She sang for an hour at the event but changed into a pink jumpsuit. Naked dresses like that, understandably, aren’t the best for intense choreography.

Of course, Perry didn’t have the only naked dress of the night. There were several at the Vanity Fair Oscar after party, but few were quite as bare as hers.

ShoeperWoman’s eBay Shopping Guide: How to Shop on eBay without the risk

a guide to ebay shopping without the risk

I have a love-hate relationship with eBay. I’m a big fan of ebay shopping, which is a great way to track down that elusive item that sold out as soon as I decided to buy it, but I stopped trying to sell there long ago – back when I realised that people on eBay are all after something for (close to) nothing, and it was almost impossible to get a fair price for the items I tried to sell. (The items I try to BUY, meanwhile, always seem to go for way more than they’re worth: go figure.)

(Don’t even get me started on all of the sellers who steal my images, and who eBay refuse to deal with: grrr!)

Anyway, back on topic, I’ve been eBay shopping for many years now, but I know quite a few people who still worry about buying something there, so here’s my guide to eBay shopping, for anyone who needs it!

First things first: before I get onto the tips, I’m going to assume that you already know how the basics of how to use eBay (if you don’t, check out their own buying guide), and are here looking for tips on how to track down a bargain, as opposed to a tutorial on how to actually use the site. With that said, here are my tips on how to find great clothing on eBay…

Know your brands

One of the downsides of buying on eBay, as opposed to a regular store, is that if the item isn’t suitable, you normally can’t return it. There are some exceptions to this, of course, and some sellers do accept returns, but most don’t, so if you don’t like your item, too bad. To minimise the chances of this happening, I’d recommend sticking mostly to brands that you’re familiar with, and which you shop from regularly, so you’ll know more or less what to expect in terms of sizing and quality. It’s not a bargain if you can’t wear it, and you’ll have a much better chance of being happy with your purchase if you’re shopping from brands you have confidence in. It can be tempting to take a gamble on an amazing-looking item from a brand you’ve never heard of, but I’d only recommend doing that as long as you understand that it IS a gamble, and the price is low-enough that you don’t mind losing it if it doesn’t work out.

Never pay more than retail

In recent years, there’s been an ongoing trend of high-street clothing becoming super-popular and selling for WAY more than the item’s original retail price. Of course, something is only worth whatever people are willing to pay for it, and how much YOU’RE willing to pay for something is totally up to you. Speaking for myself, however, I never pay more than RRP for an eBay item – and even then, I’ll only pay that if the item is brand new with tags. Bidding significantly more than the ticket price may get you the item, but you’ll probably feel like you’ve been ripped off, so before you get into a bidding war, take a deep breath, be totally honest and ask yourself whether you want the item because you genuinely love it, or because it’s suddenly become the latest “must have” item.

a guide to ebay shopping without the risk

Bid late, and bid your maximum

Have you ever had something on your Watch List, and witnessed the price slowly inch up and up and newbie bidders (and sometimes established ones, too) turn up and keep increasing their bid by another £1, and then another, and then another? Infuriating, huh? This kind of behaviour is how bidding wars start, and while that’s great news for the seller, it’s not great news for the buyer, because it means that whoever wins the auction ends up paying more than they really needed to. It also means that the need to beat the person you’re bidding against sometimes becomes greater than the need to actually buy the item, so you end up paying far more than you intended to: a hollow victory, for sure. The best way to avoid this is to always bid late, and bid your maximum. In other words, decide what you’re willing to pay for the item (don’t forget to factor in the shipping costs) and bid that amount, as late as possible in the auction. If everyone did this, eBay items would sell for lower prices, and even if your bid wasn’t the winning one, at least you’d know you hadn’t been goaded into going over-budget.

Use a sniping tool

That’s all very well, of course, but what if you CAN’T bid late? What if you’re not online when the auction ends, or your internet connection drops out at the crucial moment? What if you just get an attack of the butterfingers, and someone sneaks in and steals your item while you’re still fumbling with your keyboard? These things happen, and, in the world of online auctions, there are few things more frustrating than being pipped at the post purely because of a technical glitch. Trust me on this. There is an easy answer to this, however, and it comes in the form of sniping tools: websites such as Auction Stealer or JustSnipe which automatically place your bid for you, in the last few seconds of the auction. On these sites, you simply register for an account, type in the details of the auction you’re bidding on, plus the maximum amount you’re willing to pay, then sit back and let the site place your bid for you. The advantage of these sites is that you can totally forget about the auction: no more constant refreshing of the page, no more bidding wars, no more frustrated attempts to get in your bid before the auction ends. Sniping, however, can be a controversial subject, and some people feel it’s a very unfair way to win an auction. It’s up to you to decide where you stand on that, obviously: personally my feeling is that as many of the sniping sites are free to use (or have free options), everyone has the same opportunity to use them if they wish. As I say, though, it’s up to you to decide where you stand on that one…

Make sure there are photos of the actual item you’re bidding on

Rather than taking their own photos of the item they’re selling, some sellers will simply use a stock photo from the retailer’s website, or a photo stolen from someone’s blog. Bidding on these auctions MIGHT work out just fine, but to minimise your risk, ask the seller for photos of the ACTUAL item they’re selling, so you know what you’re getting. Sure, that dress might look fantastic on Random Blogger Girl, but her dress isn’t the one you’re bidding on, and nor is the one in the product shot from the Zara website. When you’re buying from an online store, you can generally trust that they’ll send you an item which looks exactly like the one pictured. When you’re buying second hand clothing on eBay, however, you just don’t know what you’ll get: it could be stained, or torn, or have some other defect, and you won’t know until it lands on your doorstep. If all the seller has to offer, then, is stock photography taken from someone else’s website, it could be a good idea to avoid them, and place your bid with someone who’s taken the time to photograph the actual item you’re bidding on.

Ask for further evidence

Buying designer clothing on eBay is a subject that really deserves a post of its own because some designer items are notorious for being  easily and frequently faked. Spotting fakes is a complicated subject, and there are entire websites and articles devoted to helping you do it, so all I’ll say here is that unless you’re very sure the item you’re interested in is genuine, DON’T BID. There are lots of ways to verify the authenticity of an item. Some people spend hours and hours researching the brand they’re interesting in, until they can spot a fake a mile off. Others rely on looking at the seller’s feedback or asking questions to find out where they acquired the item and how they can prove it’s genuine. If you’re considering spending a lot of money (or even a little bit of money) on something, don’t be afraid to ask the seller to give you some proof that’s it’s real. The proof could take the form of a till receipt, a serial number, or something else, but if they have nothing to hide, they shouldn’t be offended you’ve asked, and should be able to give you some idea of the item’s provenance. Any reluctance to do this should be taken as a red flag, and I can’t say this often enough, but if you’re in any doubt at all, DON’T bid. Remember, till receipts and other so-called evidence CAN be faked, sand if you want to be 100% sure your item is genuine, sometimes the only way to get that peace of mind is to buy it from a source you can trust.

Check the seller’s feedback

This one is so obvious that it almost goes without saying, but you all know to check your seller’s feedback before making a bid, right? Right?!
