Can You Actually Fix Damaged Hair?

Almost everyone has some hair damage, from dryness and brittleness to split ends and breakage. The best way to tackle dry and damaged hair really depends on the cause and type of damage. Find the best fix for your hair with these pro tips on prevention and solutions from the Good Housekeeping Institute Beauty Lab experts and hair specialists.

Can you actually repair damaged hair?

“Once hair is split or broken, nothing can permanently fuse it back together,” explains Beauty Lab executive director Birnur Aral, Ph.D. “Products like split-end menders, leave-in conditioners and treatment masks can seal the outer layer of strands so they temporarily appear smoother and less frayed and feel softer, and help protect hair from further damage.” However, the only real long-term solution is by cutting your hair, to trim off damaged areas.

ID your damage - dryness

Strands that feel or look parched can be a cue that the cuticle, which locks moisture into hair, is damaged.

Text, Font, Line, Logo, Brand,

As the cuticle is further damaged or completely lost, the hair strand can start to fray, or split in pieces, at ends or in other areas.

Text, Font, Line, Logo, Brand, Graphics,

This occurs when a strand’s layers deteriorate enough to cause weak spots along the hair shaft where the strand fractures.

Red, Line, Parallel, Rectangle, Coquelicot,

Severe damage that pulls on hair roots, from causes such as styling, can produce permanent follicle loss.

That said, conditioner is damaged hair’s best friend: Damaged hair is stripped of its protective outer layer, and conditioner helps replenish it with emollient ingredients like silicones and plant oils (such as coconut oil) and butters. “They coat wet hair so it’s easier to detangle, which can lead to less damage and make it silkier and more manageable,” Aral says.

For maximum benefits to prevent damage, use a rinse-off conditioner after every shampoo, plus a leave-in conditioner on damp hair. Swap in a deep conditioner or hair mask weekly: “These tend to contain higher concentrations of conditioning ingredients, making them thicker and heavier,” Aral explains.

How to repair chemically damaged hair

When using hair color, chemicals such as ammonia have to be used to open your hair shaft, so the dye can be deposited. Ammonia-free formulas exist, but industry studies have found that they’re just as harmful (you have to use more and leave them on longer).

Your hair is damaged if after showering, your hair dries almost instantly. That shows just how porous those color chemicals have made it, says Katherine Polite, a colorist at Zano Salon in Chicago.

1. Use a moisture-rich hair dye

Many dyes, like the Beauty Lab’s recommended formulas below, are infused with conditioning ingredients to help protect and repair hair during the color process. For gray coverage, go with a semi- or demi-permanent formula — it’ll fade faster but is less harsh than a permanent dye. To highlight at home, avoid pull-through caps, which often result in damaging color overlap (go for a cap-less kit instead).

    2. Only dye your roots

When possible, reapply dye to just the roots to minimize chemical exposure on the lengths, and “space dyeing hair 10 to 12 weeks apart at minimum,” says George Papanikolas, Matrix celebrity colorist in Los Angeles. Finally, major color changes can cause major harm (including hair breakage or even loss) when done wrong, so leave those to the pros.

How to repair broken hair and flyaways

The wrong tool or the wrong technique can tangle or, worse, tear your hair. You’re in trouble when you look in a mirror and see tiny hairs sticking up along your part and hairline. These aren’t “baby hairs” growing in, says Cheri McMaster, senior scientist for Pantene: they’re hairs that have broken. Here’s how to to stop that breakage in its tracks:

    3. Invest in a good brush to prevent breakage

Bristles are the key to preventing breakage. They should be soft, smooth — avoid those with plastic balls on the ends — and spaced out, as on a comb. Wet Brush is designed specifically for wet hair: its thin, perfectly-spaced IntelliFlex bristles are flexible and specially designed to be firm enough to get through knots and tangles, yet soft enough to keep hair healthy and snag-free.

    4. Don’t brush wet hair

H2O can exacerbate the issue: “Water exposure swells and stretches the hair’s shaft, which causes the shingle-like outer layer to lift, and adding stress from brushing in that state can cause it to break,” explains GH Beauty Lab senior chemist Sabina Wizemann.

Brush your hair before washing if possible, and if you have to detangle it wet, towel-dry so it no longer drips, apply a leave-in conditioner from roots to ends, and use a gentler wide-tooth comb or detangling brush to reduce friction. Work from the ends up in small sections to avoid ripping strands, she suggests.

How to repair damaged hair from heat

Blow-drying, flat-ironing and curling can all cause hair’s outer layer to lift up, releasing valuable moisture and leaving strands brittle, dry, and damaged. To tell if your hair is damaged, pull out a hair, run your fingernail from root to end (as if curling a ribbon), drop the strand into a glass of water — and see if it uncurls. If it doesn’t, your hair has lost elasticity, McMaster says.

    5. Use heat protectant

Before drying or ironing your hair, McMaster says, use a heat protection hair spray or serum that contains silicones or polymers, which create a protective barrier over strands. “These stylers work by coating hair at the high temperatures of heat styling and shielding the surface of damaged strands, which can improve hair’s manageability, in turn resulting in reduced breakage,” Aral explains.

    6. Make sure hair is dry before styling

Most importantly, “never blow-dry hair that hasn’t been towel- or air-dried partially first or use styling irons on hair that’s not totally dry, as that can cause any water inside to boil and the strand to rupture,” Wizemann warns. To avoid harmful friction, dry hair by wrapping your head in a small microfiber towel for a few minutes.

    7. Replace old heat tools

Throw out any heat-styling tool that you’ve had for more than five years: The older the appliance, the higher the chance that the temperature gauge has gone kaput, says Beverly Hills celebrity stylist Cristophe. Use your blow-dryer’s nozzle attachment; it cuts down on cuticle ruffling.

Pick a flat iron that has ceramic plates: Since ceramic heats up evenly, it straightens hair faster and won’t stick to — or singe — any one spot.

How to repair environmental hair damage

Sun, water, chlorine — a day of fun outdoors can be hard on your hair. These essentials will help.

    8. Shield hair from the sun

Cover hair with a hat to help shield it from the sun, which can damage hair at high levels of exposure, the Beauty Lab says. A tightly-woven hat can also help prevent sun burns and skin cancer on your scalp. (Bonus points if it has UPF protection, like the one below, which certifies that its fabric weave block’s UV rays.)

    9. Coat hair in a “waterproofing” product

Before swimming, wet your hair with shower or tap water, then coat it with a leave-in or regular conditioner to form a barrier against the chemicals like chlorine in pool water, which can cause color stripping and breakage, Cristophe says. Plus, dousing hair in clean water means it can’t absorb as much chlorine to begin with.

Hair Pros Say That Washing Your Hair Less Can Actually Make It Grow Longer, Faster

Trying to grow hair longer or get thicker hair can feel like an endless waiting game. While hair is the fastest-growing tissue in the human body, according to the Trichological Society, the average rate of growth is 0.5 to 1.7 centimeters per month or anywhere from about two to eight inches per year. That growth can feel minimal — especially when you’re waiting for it to happen.

It’s normal to shed between 50 and 100 hairs a day, according to the American Academy of Dermatology Association (AAD), but if you think your growth is really stunted, there are certain tweaks you can make to your day-to-day haircare regimen to boost hair growth. You can try using a different hair brush, adjusting how often you use your hair dryer to dial down damage to your hair or adding in hair growth oils and foods to make hair grow quicker to your routine.

These are the secrets and home remedies that grow hair fast, according to top dermatologists, celebrity hairstylists, skincare experts and our own Good Housekeeping Institute Beauty Lab pros.

1. Get frequent trims.

It may seem counterintuitive, but if you want long hair that’s actually healthy, you need to get regular trims. “While haircuts don’t make your hair grow any faster, they get rid of split ends that break your hair,” explains Michael Dueñas, a celebrity hairstylist based in Los Angeles. “Eliminating the breakage gives the appearance that your hair is growing faster.” After all, a split end that breaks can lead to your hair losing length — not to mention shine, volume and smoothness.

2. Eat the right diet.

Having long, strong hair doesn’t just depend on which products you put on your hair; it also depends on what you put into your body. “To promote hair growth, you need to ‘feed’ the hair from the inside,” explains Francesca Fusco, M.D., a dermatologist in NYC. So what foods make hair grow quicker? Those high in protein, the building blocks of hair, including meats and other sources. “Try increasing your protein intake with foods like fish, beans, nuts and whole grains,” she recommends. Even if you’re not a meat lover, you should still aim to maintain a diet high in protein for hair growth. Women who don’t get enough of it often experience “more hair shedding,” Dr. Fusco says.

And steer clear of trendy “cleanses” for a multitude of reasons. “Doing a cleanse is terrible for your hair because you’re depriving your body of nutrients,” Dueñas warns. “After doing a cleanse even for a week, you’ll notice slower hair growth and lackluster locks.”

3. Add a hair-healthy vitamin to your a.m. routine.

If your diet isn’t supplying you with enough nutrition, a supplement could make a world of difference. “Look for a multivitamin that’s formulated and labeled ‘for hair, skin and nails,'” Dr. Fusco suggests. “Those contain important vitamins like biotin and C and B that can support hair health.” Good Housekeeping Institute Nutrition Lab deputy director Stefani Sassos suggests these vitamins and minerals to contribute to healthier hair:

  • Vitamin A
  • Vitamin C
  • Vitamin E
  • Zinc
  • Iron
  • Omega-3 fatty acids

4. Shampoo less and hydrate more.

How often you shampoo your hair does actually impact your hair’s health. “Shampooing your hair [only] two to three times a week allows your natural oils to penetrate your hair, allowing it to hydrate and repair itself,” explains Ken Paves, a celebrity hairstylist in L.A. For thicker and fuller-looking hair fast, choose a shampoo labeled “volumizing” or “thickening.”

Coating your strands in a silky deep conditioner or hair mask or a hair detangler regularly can also help to prevent damage while detangling strands, according to GH Beauty Lab pros. Slather on a store-bought or DIY hair mask from root to tip once a week: One with cinnamon can stimulate blood circulation to encourage stronger, longer hair in no time, says Liana Zingarino, a freelance hair stylist based in New York City.

    5. Lay off the bleach.

As chic as platinum hair looks, going from a darker shade to light blonde could stand between you and your longest-possible hair. “When the cuticle of the hair is damaged from bleach, you can have more breakage or split ends,” explains Elizabeth Hiserodt, senior colorist at Cutler Salon in New York City. “The fewer chemical treatments, the better your hair will grow.”

    6. Avoid excessive heat styling.

“Stop over-styling your hair,” says Paves. If you must use heat, he recommends decreasing the temperature and always using a heat protectant — otherwise, you risk damaging your hair, leading to breakage and frizz.

    Mike Garten

    7. Brush hair regularly.

Going to bed with unbrushed hair may seem tempting when you’re tired, but giving your hair a few quick strokes can be great for your hair and scalp’s overall health. “Starting at the scalp, use a boar bristle brush to distribute your scalp’s oils evenly onto your hair so it stays naturally moisturized,” recommends Meri Kate O’Connor, celebrity stylist and colorist at Cooper in West Hollywood, CA. Bonus: This simple step each night also helps increase circulation, which helps make your scalp healthier.

    8. Keep your showers cooler and focus on scalp care.

A hot shower can dehydrate your skin — and it’s also rough on your hair. “Turn the water temperature down when cleansing,” recommends Paves, and give your scalp a little extra love. Massage with your fingers as you shampoo to deeply de-gunk and help boost circulation.

    9. Protect hair from physical damage.

Hair is especially susceptible to breakage when it’s wet, so instead, detangle hair before shampooing. “Water exposure swells and stretches the hair’s shaft, which causes the shingle-like outer layer to lift, and adding stress from brushing in that state can cause it to break,” says Good Housekeeping Institute Beauty Lab senior chemist Sabina Wizemann.

If you have to detangle hair when wet, do it the right way: Apply a top-rated leave-in conditioner from roots to ends and use a gentler wide-tooth comb or detangling brush to reduce friction, working from the ends up in small sections to prevent tearing hair, Wizemann advises.

    10. Sleep on a silk pillowcase.

Getting better hair overnight is possible — all you need is to switch up your pillowcase and reap the hair-healthy benefits of silk. “Silk is easier on hair — it helps avoid tangles and breakage,” says Jesleen Ahluwalia, M.D., assistant clinical professor of dermatology at Mount Sinai in NYC. The less breakage your hair experiences, the longer your hair will be. In fact, they’re so good that the Good Housekeeping Institute even conducted an entire study to find the best silk pillowcases.

a stack of 3 pillows in gray, white, and blue silk pillowcases on an aqua background

    11. Try using minoxidil.

Pick up a bottle of Women’s Rogaine, recommends GH beauty director April Franzino. “The active ingredient, minoxidil, is FDA-approved and proven to help stop hair loss and promote hair regrowth with continued use according to packaging instructions.” For a more targeted solution, pick up Hers 2% Minoxidil Topical Solution and use the dropper applicator to focus on more specific problem areas.

But be wary of shampoos that claim to grow hair — hair growth from shampoo “has yet to be scientifically proven, at least in published research or to FDA’s standards,” says Jeni Thomas, Ph.D., principal scientist at Proctor & Gamble Beauty.

When to talk to your doctor about hair loss

Underlying causes of hair loss may be contributing to your hair’s slow (or lack of) growth. It’s estimated that more than 50% of women will experience noticeable hair loss, according to Cleveland Clinic — and that doesn’t count those born with wispy or sparse strands. “Hair that’s naturally thin in diameter [fine] or sparse is genetic,” says Joyce Davis, M.D., dermatologist in NYC. “Hair loss is often hereditary (or androgenic) thinning, which tends to be patchy.” Another common type of hair loss is telogen effluvium (TE), or allover shedding due to hormones or health issues such as thyroid or autoimmune disease and anemia.

With TE, hair generally grows back once the problem is treated; see a doctor for diagnosis. For androgenic loss, the over-the-counter topical minoxidil mentioned above is proven to grow hair with continued use. For all types, the professional treatment PRP (platelet-rich plasma) stimulates growth with scalp injections of your blood’s growth factors, Dr. Davis says. Consult a dermatologist to find out if it’s right for you.

5 Beauty Tips I’ve Learned From the Most Important Women in My Life

As Good Housekeeping’s beauty director, April Franzino has picked up countless pieces of skin, hair, and makeup advice straight from the pros. Still, some of her most valuable beauty wisdom has come from her own family members. Here, she recounts tips from her grandma, mother and aunts that have informed her approach to beauty, confidence and the aging process.

1. A little can go a long way

For my entire life, I’ve watched my grandma do a select few things to look pulled together, no matter her age: Swipe on lipstick, spritz on perfume, curl her hair, and paint her nails. This taught me that you don’t need a complicated beauty routine to feel confident — identifying the small rituals that give you a boost can be more than enough.

2. Find what works for you

Most of my early beauty education came from one of my aunts, who is a professional hairstylist. She was the first to bring me to the beauty supply store to learn about skin, hair, and makeup products, and she also taught me how to use them. One of my first jobs was working at her salon.

Observing her over the years has shown me that, although experimenting is fun at times, you don’t have to try every trend that comes along. You can find the look that’s flattering and comfortable to you and make it your signature. Hers is long, wavy, highlighted hair and natural makeup that looks gorgeous in any setting — a similar aesthetic to the one I’ve adapted over the years.

3. Evolve your routine during menopause

I’ve learned from the women in my family who have gone through menopause that your body and skin’s needs can change drastically during that time. It’s important to adjust your skincare routine accordingly and remember that taking the time to care for yourself is a must.

As I get older, I’m excited to see that more skincare brands are offering research-backed collections created to specifically target the effects of menopause, from sensitivity and dryness to lines and loss of firmness. For example, the new No7 Menopause Skincare collection (shop the full line-up below) was co-created with input from over 7,000 menopausal women.

According to the brand, the range is “designed to target visual signs of reduced estrogen and collagen for radiant and replenished looking skin.” And it’s not just for menopausal women, either. While I’m not personally at that stage yet, I love to use the Instant Cooling Mist with rosewater and glycerin to refresh and hydrate my skin throughout the day.

4. Consistency is key

At every life stage, making time to take care of yourself physically, mentally, and emotionally is essential for looking and feeling your best as you age. The results of a consistent skincare and self-care routine are cumulative over the years and can help keep your skin and body healthy down the line.

5. Embrace your natural features

My mom has always been unapologetically herself beauty-wise, whether that has meant wearing her curly hair full and natural, or going makeup-free and showing off her skin. Her example helped me feel comfortable in my unique beauty, including my wavy hair texture, the bump on my nose, and my bare skin — dark circles, dryness, and all. Most importantly, all of the women in my life have shown me that, whatever your age, true beauty comes through your spirit and soul.

I Found the Right Injectable to Complement My Skin Regimen

These days, coming across someone in the spotlight who has had zero injectables feels like discovering a unicorn. Laticia Rolle, a model, influencer, entrepreneur, and podcaster was that rare exception to the rule. She avoided injectables until, “I reached my 30s and I started to see deeper lines — especially between my eyebrows — that just weren’t there before,” she says. That motivated her to begin researching options that felt in sync with her no-fuss beauty and wellness regimen. That’s how she discovered Xeomin (incobotulinumtoxinA), a double-filtered, anti-wrinkle injection for frown lines.

When I take care of myself, I feel my best, and I’m able to show up for people that I love.

She chose it because of the simplicity of the formula. According to Jennifer Levine, MD, a double board-certified facial plastic surgeon in New York City, “unlike the other neurotoxins on the market, Xeomin is free from any complexing proteins associated with the botulinum toxin molecule,” she explains. “Xeomin is made through a unique process that uses two filtration steps to isolate the therapeutic component of the molecule and removes proteins that don’t play an active role in treatment.” For Rolle, this minimalist approach was key to making the move to go beyond her basic beauty regimen. “When I learned about Xeomin from my provider, it piqued my interest and I thought, Why not?”

Levine explains that Xeomin is a good choice for injectable newbies because some people can form antibodies to the complexing proteins found in other neurotoxins that, over time, can make the injections less effective. This can show up as ‘dose creep’, meaning that you need more units to get the same effect that you previously achieved. “Since patients are getting injected at younger ages than ever before and have the potential to be injected for many years, forming antibodies may be more likely,” Levine notes. “Starting with Xeomin makes more sense.”

Here, Rolle shares her approach to aging and self-care and her experience with Xeomin, the smart toxin.

Why I Tried Injectables

When I take care of myself, I feel my best, and I’m able to effortlessly show up for people that I love and for my job. Look, we’re all going to age. I feel like, as a woman, it’s important to embrace the process. But if there are things that will make me feel better about my physical appearance, like Xeomin, I’m going to do it with integrity and with intention.

My Experience

I had so many questions, but my doctor quickly put me at ease. I also told him that I did not want to look plastic — that I just wanted to smooth my eleven lines. He gave me a stress ball to hold, did five injections between my brows, and it was done. I started to notice results in just four to five days and I absolutely love how it looks — I still feel very natural.

We’re all going to age. I feel like, as a woman, it’s important to embrace the process.

The Results: How Xeomin Has Made My Regimen Quicker

At night, I double cleanse and use my serums (sometimes I use a retinol, other times vitamin C or peptides). Before Xeomin, I also did Gua Sha nightly, a massage technique I learned from my esthetician, and had even started taping my wrinkles (a hack that’s supposed to help minimize facial movement overnight) to try and smooth out my frown lines. Then I would journal in bed to decompress. Now, I can skip those last two steps and get right to unwinding. My morning beauty regimen has also gotten a lot simpler. I put on my skincare, a little blush and mascara and I’m out.

Xeomin will definitely be a part of my regimen going forward. The doctor told me re-treatments are usually every three to four months and you want to stay consistent for the best results.

The Hot Derm-Approved Viral Skincare Trend to Try

While many TikTok skincare trends are questionable (to say the least), we’ve finally found one that has serious dermatologist and expert approval. Meaning: this is a trend worth trying. “Skin cycling” is the hot term for using various skincare products on different days, giving your complexion a break from potent active ingredients to achieve optimal results.

“It is essentially a ‘less is more’ kind of skincare practice,” says Tiffany J. Libby, M.D., a dermatologist in Providence, Rhode Island. Think start low and go slow. “It’s a concept that prioritizes moderation, and attaining results without causing the skin barrier to become compromised.”

The biggest benefit? “Skin cycling gives skin increased tolerability to actives,” says Michelle Henry, M.D., a dermatologist and founder of Skin & Aesthetic Surgery of Manhattan. Also, it’s a flexible concept. “The beauty is that while the ritual has a template, it’s not a hard and fast rule,” she explains. “You can tweak it to make it work for your skin.” We’ve got the guidelines below on how to embrace this routine.

What is skin cycling?

“The process involves alternating the application of strong active skincare ingredients like exfoliants and retinoids to minimize the chance of irritation,” explains Dr. Libby. But skin cycling isn’t entirely new: “It’s a tried and true derm approved method with a catchy new name,” says Dr. Henry.

Does skin cycling actually work and what are the results?

“The biggest advantage of skin cycling is that it prevents overuse of active ingredients, which can ultimately do more harm than good,” Dr. Libby says. “While it’s effective for all skin types, it can be a game-changer for those with sensitive skin, as it eases the complexion into exfoliating ingredients and retinoids.”

How many days is skin cycling?

Typically, skin cycling is done over four days, but as we mentioned above, “that is just a template,” says Dr. Henry. “There are many ways to do it; for example, you can always add an extra day of recovery if you think your skin needs it.”

What are the steps of a skin cycling routine?

Night One: Exfoliating

This step is about sloughing off dead skin cells to smooth and clarify. Dr. Libby recommends using chemical exfoliants like alpha, beta or poly hydroxy acids (the gentlest option) over physical versions like scrubs, which can be abrasive.

Night Two: Retinol Treatment

The vitamin A derivative is proven to reduce wrinkles and dark spots. Dr. Henry suggests using the sandwich method when applying: “Start with moisturizer, follow with a retinol treatment and finish with another layer of moisturizer.”

Nights Three and Four: Recovery Skincare

These nights, focus on fortifying the skin’s moisture barrier with nourishing serums and moisturizers. “Look for ingredients like ceramides and humectants such as glycerin and hyaluronic acid to lock hydration in,” Dr. Libby advises.

Is skin cycling good or bad?

Skin cycling is a good practice for pretty much all skin types, but it can be extra beneficial for those with sensitive or easily irritated skin. While the trend has many benefits, there are some caveats:

It could delay the results of your skincare. “It may take slightly longer to see effects from skincare treatments like retinoids when you use them two to three times per week as opposed to daily, which would deliver maximum results,” Dr. Libby explains.

It may not be necessary for tolerant skin. If your skin can already handle consistent use of active ingredients like exfoliators and retinol, you won’t get the most benefit out of skin cycling. “There is no reason to go backward,” Dr. Henry says.

Everything You Need to Know About Henna Tattoos

In some cultures, henna designs are synonymous with celebration. The night before a major event like a wedding, it’s common practice to decorate hands — and sometimes even feet — with the popular natural dye. Whether you’re considering it for your nuptials — or perhaps even a holiday like Eid or Diwali in certain cultures — a henna tattoo can be a great way to celebrate.

Here’s everything you need to know about henna for beginners, including how to care for a henna tattoo and some popular henna design ideas.

What is henna?

Henna is an Arabic word that refers to a plant natively found in Asia and Africa. In South Asia, henna is commonly referred to as mehndi. The henna plant offers a reddish-brown dye when applied to the skin or hair. The dye is formed by first drying the plant’s leaves and then crushing them to a powder. The powder is then made into a paste, which can be applied to hair or a beard as a natural dye. The paste can also be piped into plastic bag cones to create intricate henna designs on hands and feet.

While the FDA has only approved henna for use as a hair dye, not for direct application to skin, allergic reactions to traditional plant-based henna are not common. That said, you will want to take care to avoid so-called “black” henna, which often contains high levels of a chemical called paraphenylenediamine, or PPD. While PPD is an approved permanent hair dye ingredient, the level found in black henna has been shown to cause allergic and hypersensitivity reactions when applied directly to skin, especially in children.

How long does a henna tattoo last?

A henna tattoo can last up to three weeks on the skin, but you’ll probably notice that it will start to fade after two or three days. It will gradually fade away until it’s completely removed from the skin.

A henna tattoo works by dying the skin, so as the top level of the skin starts to naturally slough off, so too will the tattoo. You’ll also notice a difference in the color of the henna tattoo. When freshly applied, it will appear as a dark stain, but as time goes on, it will fade to orange or light brown.

How to care for your henna tattoo

Your henna artist can best advise how to care for your henna tattoo based on the type of henna they use. Still, there are some general guidelines you can follow to ensure yours will last as long as possible:

Once your henna has been freshly applied, let the henna dry out. This can take 20 minutes up to an hour. At this stage, the dried out henna tattoo might start to flake. Let it flake off naturally but don’t deliberately flake it off — let the dye sit. Because henna tattoos work as a dye, you need to let them set for at least a few hours (or even overnight). This part of the application process is a gentle and patient one. Just be careful to tend to your henna tattoo — don’t smudge it anywhere and don’t get water on it.

How to remove a henna tattoo

Henna tattoos can’t be removed overnight or in a few hours, so be certain you want a henna tattoo before going for it. To remove a henna tattoo, the layers of skin where the dye has seeped into need to be removed. This can be achieved by washing the area with soap many times over, or exfoliating to speed the process. A henna tattoo should naturally remove itself over the course of a few weeks with regular hand-washing.

Where are henna tattoos placed?

A henna tattoo is most commonly placed on the hands and the feet, but technically you can place one almost anywhere on your body. Speak to your henna artist about what you’re envisioning and make sure they have the experience and skill to achieve what you’re looking for.

How much does a henna tattoo cost?

The price rates for a henna tattoo vary by region and the intricacy of the design. Speak to a local henna artist to learn about their rates. On average, a simple henna tattoo design on one hand might cost between $10 to $15; an involved bridal design could cost upwards of $500.

How to learn henna design

Like any form of art, henna requires practice! To learn how to become a henna artist, you can look into henna courses at local beauty and esthetician schools, particularly those that specialize in catering to South Asian brides. Apart from courses, you can practice on your own and teach yourself the art of henna. It requires a steady hand and a lot of practice, but with time you should expect to see great results.

Popular henna tattoo designs

preview for Amazing Henna Designs

Henna is a very organic art, so it’s likely that your henna artist will use their own creative expression to come up with a design for you. That said, some henna artists might have a sample photo book of designs they can replicate for you, or you can bring your own design ideas for the henna artist to create. The popularity of certain henna designs varies by culture and region, and can include symbolic designs that symbolize luck, love, joy and more.

However across all cultures, flowers are a very popular motif.

Another popular motif is paisley, particularly in South Asia.

Simple dotted sun motifs are also popular.

For weddings, you might see the bride get her partner’s name written on her hand in henna.

For a fun and modern approach, brides might also tie in the story of how they met, such as including a famous landmark from a certain city into the henna design or including henna paintings of shared memories or favorite hobbies.
