Jennifer Lawrence Responds to Critics Who Called Her Dress "Sexist"

Jennifer Lawrence made headlines on Tuesday for wearing a sleeveless Versace dress during a outdoor photo call in London where it was in the 40s. Some people, concerned for Lawrence having to pose in the cold bare-skinned, called out the contrast between Lawrence’s wardrobe and her male colleagues, who were all in jackets. They saw it as the literal picture of greater sexism in Hollywood.

Lawrence took to her Facebook today to respond to those headlines, which she called “utterly ridiculous,” and to give more context on that photo. She voluntarily wore the dress outside for just five minutes before going back indoors. “I would have stood in the snow for that dress because I love fashion and that was my choice,” she wrote. “This is sexist, this is ridiculous, this is not feminism. Over-reacting about everything someone says or does, creating controversy over silly innocuous things such as what I choose to wear or not wear, is not moving us forward.”

Below, her full post:

Wow. I don’t really know where to get started on this “Jennifer Lawrence wearing a revealing dress in the cold” controversy. This is not only utterly ridiculous, I am extremely offended. That Versace dress was fabulous, you think I’m going to cover that gorgeous dress up with a coat and a scarf? I was outside for 5 minutes. I would have stood in the snow for that dress because I love fashion and that was my choice. This is sexist, this is ridiculous, this is not feminism. Over-reacting about everything someone says or does, creating controversy over silly innocuous things such as what I choose to wear or not wear, is not moving us forward. It’s creating silly distractions from real issues. Get a grip people. Everything you see me wear is my choice. And if I want to be cold, THAT’S MY CHOICE TOO!

Here's Why Kate Middleton Didn't Wear All-Black to the BAFTAs

On Sunday, Kate Middleton and Prince William attended the BAFTAs in London. While most women wore black dresses on the red carpet, in support of the Time’s Up movement — much like at the Golden Globes — the Duchess of Cambridge opted for a dark green gown with a thin black sash around her waist.

The Duchess wore a Jenny Packham gown and carried a Mascaro clutch.

Middleton’s black sash is likely a nod to the Time’s Up moment, which seeks to end sexual harassment in the workplace, across every industry worldwide. However, as a member of the royal family, Middleton isn’t allowed to show any political affiliation or bias, so wearing all-black might have been considered a breach of protocol.

Getty Images

Prior to the BAFTAs, Daily Mirror correspondent Victoria Murphy noted that Middleton would likely choose a dress “that is black with some colored/metallic detail.” However, the Duchess of Cambridge opted to wear a dark hue of green, with black detailing. This is probably her compromise, on a night that saw almost everyone don black outfits.

For comparison, last year, the Duchess wore a black gown, with floral detailing:

Over 200 members of the film industry signed an open letter, published on Sunday before the BAFTAs, to launch a UK initiative inspired by Time’s Up. Emma Watson donated $1.4 million to the new legal fund that, like its US counterpart, aims to support people affected by sexual harassment.

To further support the launch of the Justice and Equality Fund, women wore black on the BAFTAs red carpetand several actresses were accompanied by activists.

5 Kiss-proof lipsticks for Valentine’s Day – Latest In Beauty Blog

Valentine’s Day is fast-approaching, and while dating can be tough, finding a kiss-proof lip colour doesn’t have to be! When we’re preparing for a night out, our favourite power weapon is a strong lip look – lipstick is the one product in your beauty arsenal that loves you back, more so if it lasts. Who really puts aside extra time during a date to re-apply lipstick? There’s definitely more pressing things to worry about, like whether your date is *gasps* one of those people that skips dessert.

Even if you’re too busy for kisses this Valentine’s Day, don’t miss a trick when long-lasting lip colour is concerned. Choosing a lipstick that might stick around longer than your date doesn’t have to be a faff, so we’ve rounded up some of our favourite kiss-ready lip formulas that are perfect for your romantic plans.

TOP TIPS

Long-wearing lip formulas can attract a bad rep for being excessively dry, leaving you with not so pleasant flaking lips. Although there are many great lipsticks out there, we have a couple of tricks up our sleeves to get the best out of your kiss-proof pout.

  • Firstly, don’t skimp on the prep by investing in a good lip scrub to slough away any dry areas.
  • Follow with a balm for nourishment and let it completely sink in.
  • Line lips with a good lip liner to prevent feathering.
  • Seal the deal. Lipcote is our go-to for this – it’s the original lipstick sealer and the celebrated secret behind lip colour that not only performs, but lasts. A clever transparent topcoat, Lipcote prevents fading, feathering and is transfer resistant. Simply apply lipstick, blot with a tissue and brush Lipcote’s magical transparent sealer on top.

Meet the First Amputee to Be Featured in "Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue"

Paralympic snowboarder Brenna Huckaby traded in Utah’s snow-covered mountains for a sandy beach in Aruba for a spread in the 2018 Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue. But while the scenery was a drastic change for the world champion (who is set to compete in the Paralympic Games in PyeongChang next month), a constant that remains in Huckaby’s life is her ability to break through barriers. And her Sports Illustrated debut is another example of that.

Advertisement – Continue Reading Below

The 22-year-old is the first amputee to ever be featured in the coveted swimsuit issue, and Huckaby says she is overjoyed by the outpour of support she’s already received from other women with disabilities.

“[The response has] been extremely positive and uplifting, which I was hoping for,”she tells Cosmopolitan.com. “Before doing the shoot, I thought, ‘Holy cow, I’m opening myself up for a lot of good, but potentially also a lot of bad.’ I wanted it to be done right. I wanted to represent women with disabilities the right way.”

Huckaby says one woman’s message in particular has stood out because of how much she related to the obstacles she’s had to overcome. “If I had seen these pictures when I was younger, that would’ve made [such a] difference in my recovery after cancer,” Huckaby says the woman told her. “Just hearing that made the shoot that much more worth it.”

In 2010, Huckaby was diagnosed with osteosarcoma, a type of bone cancer — a diagnosis that, due to complications, forced doctors to amputate her right leg. She was only a freshman in high school, and describes that time in her life as her “lowest of low.” During her junior year, she moved to Utah from Louisiana, where the former gymnast took up snowboarding as a way to get back into sports, and the rest is history.

For Cosmopolitan.com, she opens up about how she overcame her struggles with body image and self-confidence after her amputation, dating and motherhood.

SPORTS ILLUSTRATED

Happiness became a priority during her recovery.

I started going to the gym and that slowly started to help me build my confidence, because I could walk [with the help of my prosthetic]. That may not sound like much, but I tried to find things that I could enjoy. I started to surround myself with people that made me feel good. That wasn’t easy, but you have to feel good [within yourself] in order to find other people that can make you feel good.

And dating gave her a sense of normalcy.

I had my eyes set on a football player in high school. He started to give me attention. As much of a douche as he turned out to be, he definitely helped me a lot. He helped me feel good. He got me roses! Dating him gave me a sense of confidence because he was a popular football player. To have somebody show that much of an interest in me – it made me feel good. It made me feel normal.

She shared a vulnerable moment with her fiancé.

He was the first person that I ever took my prosthetic off in front of. He was incredibly supportive and was asking questions. It’s so different when it’s genuine questions versus just trying to fill dead air.

He’s played such a huge role in me breaking out and feeling comfortable with myself. He reassures me and helps push me out of my comfort zone. He plays such a huge role in letting me know that I don’t need my prosthetic to be who I am.

Giving birth gave her a newfound appreciation for her body.

It took having my daughter [Lilah] for me to realize that I’m a boss — to realize how amazing of a person I am inside that it doesn’t matter what I look like outside. I know that I’m so much stronger than my body.

Her advice for other amputees and women with disabilities:

Know that you’re a force. To sit back and let an amputation try and stop your life — you just can’t. My advice would be to remember who you are within and that your body is a tool. Don’t be afraid to push yourself and get yourself out there.

5 First Date Stories that’ll make you laugh – Latest In Beauty Blog

From your stomach doing more somersaults than the local gymnast team, to selecting the perfect outfit and makeup look, dating is as tough as the *shudders* ‘so, have you got a boyfriend yet?’ conversation starter at family shindigs. As I approach the ripe old age of 26, I’ve come to quickly realise that I have put off the idea of dating for so long that I have actually forgotten what it’s like to date (did I ever really know? Probably not). Beyoncé has been Crazy in Love, Dangerously in Love and Drunk in Love, and yet it seems harder than ever to find a non-psychotic bachelor that also enjoys the company of cats, watching Mamma Mia and binge eating pizza (if you’re out there, apply within.)

First dates, although stressful/terrifying/often horrific, tend to be characteristically rather memorable – even when they go well. I’ve been told you have to kiss a lot of frogs before you can find your prince (thanks Disney) and therefore, dating becomes a required task. We’re now living in a time where swiping and hookups escalate from an app on our phones, and maybe I just can’t get on board with that – what ever happened to pretending your suitcase is too heavy for you to carry up the stairs only for a nice guy to come along to help you? I was going to fabricate an elaborate first date story of my own, but to be truthful, I have only ever been on one first date and it was as awkward as I’d imagined it to be – I guess I’ll know for next time not to go to a restaurant that serves garlic bread with actual chunks of garlic…

Because dating is inevitably not what we imagine it all to be, and to provide the small comfort that you’re not alone in this 2018 stale dating pool (or, let’s be real, to just make myself feel less like a destined-to-be spinster) I turned to my friends to get the low-down on some of their funniest and weirdest first dates. Read on for some entertainment and be sure to tweet us if you have any good ones! We’ll pick one of our favourites to win our Date Night beauty box!

Perfect height for an armrest

“I liked the look of a guy across a bar years ago, my friend gave him my number without telling me when I went to the loo, and after we left he texted me asking me out for a drink.  We arranged to meet a few days later, and stood next to each other side-by-side for the first time…  and he was little.  As I walked up to him, in heels, the first thing he said was “woah, you’re tall” and I blurted out “and you’re small!” and we politely proceeded to have an awkward drink knowing we weren’t interested in each other and played table football as he demonstrated a typical short man syndrome competitive streak, complete with “YESSS”es through gritted teeth and fist pumps. He won, I stopped wearing big heels on first dates, and never saw him again.” – Emma, London

Bottoms up (quite literally)

“My first, first date and my first tinder date left me wrecked with fear for a tedious meal with bolognese round my mouth and an argument over the cheque. So I decided to throw him in at the deep end and take him to a life drawing class in soho during pride week. We sat and drew two wonderfully sculpted men while cars bumped into each other outside, distracted by their bottoms in the window display of the pop up shop behind Carnaby Street. Turns out he had an art degree and the whole thing didn’t phase him at all! It was a match!” – Louella, London

Put his foot in it

“So I liked this guy and he was a friend of a friend; so I thought he MUST be normal. When he asked me out I was so excited and spent the week before obviously planning our wedding. I’m cool, I’m cool. Anyway, we were at a really nice restaurant; the wine was flowing and things were going ok… Then out of nowhere he drops the bombshell and told me he had a foot fetish. I laughed and thought he was joking. He smiled, nervously and I looked for the nearest exit. He then went on to compliment my feet!!! To cut a long story short, his mates joined, I left and he joked that he’d ‘try not to pull another girl while out’. I really know how to pick ’em!” – Jemma, Plymouth

Legged it!

“My date started by limping up to me with one leg massively shorter than the other, with a punch on the arm for a greeting. I was then subjected to a walk down a London high street whilst being repeatedly ‘bro punched’ on the arm in agreement with everything I said and a ‘yeah mate’ to boot. Once we arrived at the bar, where the barman gave me a ‘REALLY?’ side eye, I was then subjected to an hour’s talk about Tottenham Hotspur. Not wanting to be rude, I offered to buy one drink back before running to the bathroom, calling a mate and hatching the escape plan. I introduced my date to two drunk girls on the table next to ours and as he went to buy them both a drink, I legged it. Not one bit sorry.” – Vix, London

Lost in Translation

“I moved to Poland and one of my female friends set me up with a nice girl. What I wasn’t told was that she didn’t speak any English and awkwardly, I didn’t speak much Polish. There was a lot of awkward smiles and staring, and understandably, it was all a little uncomfortable. The most I got out of the conversation (I think) was that her sister was in a Convent… an unusual topic for a first date as you can imagine. I bought her a drink and that’s as far as we got…” – Sam, London

This Is What Meghan Markle's First Engagement Ring Looked Like

When Prince Harry proposed to Meghan Markle, he pulled out all the stops. The royal designed a gorgeous yellow-gold band with three stones that had a significant meaning to them both. The center cushion-cut diamond came from Botswana, a favorite destination, and the two round-cut diamonds on either side once belonged to Princess Diana.

The unique pairing of cushion-cut and round diamonds is already inspiring copycats, but it’s not the first engagement ring Meghan’s ever received.

The former Suits actress once wore another diamond during her first marriage to producer Trevor Engelson. The couple, who dated for six years and stayed married for two, tied the knot on September 10, 2011, after getting engaged the previous year.

Engelson popped the question with a classic ring that appears to have a princess-cut diamond solitaire set on two, thin pavé bands.

Meghan Markle wore the ring to a Beverly Hills event in October 2011.

Based on past photos, Meghan chose a slightly thicker pavé ring for the wedding ceremony, wearing some serious bling on her left hand.

For her second marriage, Meghan will likely wear a gold wedding ring instead. Four generations of royals — including the Queen Mother, the Queen, Diana, Princess of Wales, and the Duchess of Cambridge — have worn wedding bands with metal from the same Welsh gold mine. This particular mining operation just announced their reopening later this year — just in time for the next royal wedding.

One of Kate Middleton's Favorite Hair Products Is Less Than $20

It’s not easy to dress like royalty, no matter how badly you might want to do so. The Duchess of Cambridge doesn’t exactly shop at Target. But getting royalty-worthy hair is a whole different story.

Kate’s haircare routine is actually pretty affordable, minus the whole “professional stylist who travels everywhere you go” aspect.

According to People, the royal’s stylist Amanda Cook Tucker shared the products she packs when traveling with the royal family in a now-deleted Instagram post. Luckily for all of us non-royals, the publication revealed that Tucker uses Kiehl’s Creme with Silk Groom ($16, sephora.com) on Kate’s hair.

kate middleton hair products

Sephora

It’s a $16 styling cream formulated with the brand’s “Silk Groom” technology which, in addition to actual silk, contains jojoba oil and proteins to keep strands strong, smooth, and soft. While not as inexpensive as the $2.80 hairspray Tucker also uses, according to People, it still won’t hit your wallet too hard. Besides, its worth it if you want to emulate Kate’s elegant waves.

If the royal stamp of approval isn’t enough for you, the product also boasts some glowing online reviews. One Sephora customer says they’ve used it for 20 years and writes, “If want you want smooth, silky, Charlotte York-type hair — this is what you need in your life. Unlike other shine products on the market, it NEVER looks heavy or greasy.”

So, it’s good enough for Kate and at least one enthusiastic Sephora reviewer. What exactly are you waiting for?

Kate Hudson's SAG Awards Dress Caused a Lot of Commotion

What’s pink, frilly, designed by Valentino, and causing a commotion on Twitter? No, not Nicole Kidman’s Critics’ Choice Awards dress. That was two weeks ago! This time, we’re talking about the dress Kate Hudson wore to the Screen Actors Guild Awards. And we’re definitely not the only ones talking about it!

Getty

Twitter is full of live dress commentary during award-show red carpet broadcasts, but nothing seemed to fire up the tweeting masses last night quite like Kate’s tiered, bubblegum-pink gown with a high black lace neck, black velvet ribbon belt, and heart-shaped black polka dots. It was just too much whimsy for some people to handle.

Oh, don’t worry, Aimée, plenty of other people did.
