Forget mermaid Barbie, Dua Lipa’s in beach Barbie mode with these holiday looks

She may have taken to the waves as a mermaid in the Barbie movie but since the film’s release, Dua Lipa’s been moonlighting as beach Barbie and giving us all a lesson in holiday dressing.

Following the London premiere, Dua headed to Albania and she’s been schooling us in summer dressing 101 ever since. Her most recent look featured a shimmery pink metallic mini dress from Diesel’s 2024 resort collection, paired with a chunky gold necklace and an orange and yellow snake print bag from The Attico. The combination gives beach Barbie, Disco Barbie and Mermaidcore, all wrapped into one.

These At-Home Chemical Peels Rival Professional Treatments

Here’s what to know when looking for effective at-home face peels, according to GH Beauty Lab and dermatologist experts:

✔️ I.D. the right ingredients. The most common (and most effective) at-home chemical peel ingredients are alpha and beta hydroxy acids. These are naturally found in foods and plants, and can have either water- (alpha) or oil- (beta) loving properties.

– Alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs) like glycolic, lactic, mandelic, malic tartaric and citric acids have all been proven effective exfoliators.

– Beta hydroxy acids, the most ubiquitous of which is salicylic acid. Besides its exfoliating properties, salicylic acid uses its oil-attracting properties to remove dirt and oil from pores, making it ideal acne-prone and oily skin.

Enzymes derived from fruits (like pineapple or papaya) are also used in peels for gentle exfoliation.

✔️ Check the label. “Make sure the peel you’re purchasing is meant for at-home use and is not a professional product,” Butler advises, as professional formulas can be stronger and potentially damage skin if applied incorrectly.

✔️ Know your brands. To better ensure safety, shop from well-known skincare brands and retailers that cater to at-home consumers, both Butler and Dr. Scott recommend.

✔️ Proceed with caution. “Those with extremely sensitive skin, rosacea, eczema or psoriasis should avoid at-home chemical peels as they can trigger flares,” Dr. Scott advises.

✔️ Don’t try TCA peels at home. You may see them mentioned online, but “never try a trichloroacetic acid (TCA) peel at home,” Butler warns. “TCA is a very powerful acid and should be used by professionals only.”

Emily Ratajkowski just made a case for the return of another Y2K style staple and I’m here for it

Right now, it seems like a day doesn’t go by without another noughties fashion trend making an unlikely resurgence among the street style set. First, there were butterfly tops, then came boob tubes and let’s not even talk about the return of the low rise jean (as someone who’s still traumatized from their first fashion outing, I have to admit I’m not wholly convinced these should be coming back).

Em Rata has led the Y2K revival recently (we’re still obsessed with her Reebok classic sneakers), stepping out in a silhouette so iconic that I’d believe she’s had it hidden at the back of her wardrobe all these years. Yes, it’s the halterneck top. Featuring a nostalgic bandeau-shaped top, skinny straps and a hanky hemline, all in a crisp white hue, it’s screaming noughties girl band in the best way possible.

Alongside her retro halter, she wore a pair of midriff-bearing low-rise jeans in a statement snake print and finished with sleek sunnies and dark red trainers. It’s this relaxed pairing which takes this look to the next level and cements her as one of my favourite celebs for seriously effortless street style.

Jawline Filler Is the Newest FDA-Approved Injection — and It

Facial fillers have become more popular and more advanced than ever. While they are a cosmetic procedure, filler injections are considered noninvasive, require minimal prep and downtime and can give visible results at a speed and level that you can’t typically achieve with topical skincare products alone. Fans of fillers love the ability to create sculpted cheekbones, pillowy lips and smooth, bright under-eyes in a matter of minutes, but there’s a new spot for filler that’s on the rise: the jawline.

Similar to chin filler, jawline filler provides an option for those who want to strengthen the profile of their lower face without going under the knife. This less-invasive procedure for what industry pros call “lower facial optimization” is still fairly new: The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) only just approved the first filler product for the chin area in 2020, and another product specifically for the jawline last year in 2022.

Despite its newness, jawline filler is already trending. “Filler injection into the jawline is increasing in popularity, especially as more people are talking about it on social media,” says Joshua Zeichner, M.D., a New York City-based board-certified dermatologist and Associate Professor of Dermatology and Director of Cosmetic & Clinical Research in Dermatology at Mount Sinai Hospital. A search for “jawline filler” returns over 298 million results on TikTok, and search interest is jaw filler has been increasing since the mid-2010s, seeing its peak in the last year.

What is jaw filler, and what does it do?

“Injectable fillers are products designed to be injected into the skin to help replace volume and restore structure,” says Dr. Zeichner. Injectable fillers can be used all over the face, but jawline filler in particular is designed to create structure and definition along the jawline and chin.

What are the benefits of jaw filler?

“Filler can be injected in the angle of the jaw to elongate the jawline itself, and give a more defined look,” says Dr. Zeichner. This can also be injected between the jawline and the chin to hide the appearance of jowls.”

Another pro: Fillers are temporary, dissolvable and less invasive than other cosmetic procedures for the area, like implants or liposuction, so they allow you the flexibility to test drive your altered appearance before potentially committing to a bigger, more drastic or more permanent procedure.

How does jawline filler work?

To mimic the appearance of a naturally strong jaw, an injector will place filler along the jaw and chin. “Fillers injected into the jawline typically are placed deep in the skin to help build and reinforce bony structure,” says Dr. Zeichner. “For this reason, it is preferable to use a product that is more firm and consistent.” He prefers to use Restylane, a dissolvable hyaluronic acid (HA) dermal filler, for the procedure (most commonly Restylane Lyft or Restylane Defyne, which was FDA-approved for chin augmentation in February 2021).

“I almost exclusively use hyaluronic acid fillers because they’re so versatile and they’re also reversible,” says Dendy Engelman, M.D, a board-certified dermatologic surgeon at Shafer Clinic Fifth Avenue in New York City. She tends to opt for Juvederm Volux XC, which was FDA-approved for improvement of jawline definition in August 2022.

Aside from HA, there’s also calcium hydroxyapatite (CaHA), a mineral found naturally in human bone and teeth tissue. CaHA fillers “do not attract as much water as HA fillers can and are said to result in a less puffy filling,” says Birnur Aral, Ph.D., executive director of the GH Institute Beauty Lab.

Beyond its “immediate tightening and lifting effects, [there are also] longer-term bio-stimulatory effects that help build elastin and collagen,” says Aral, which could mean it actually helps improve your natural facial structure over time. Another pro: Compared to HA fillers, CaHA “syringes contain more material, resulting in a more cost-efficient treatment,” says Aral. Radiesse + uses CaHA and was approved for jawline enhancement and nasolabial folds in February 2022.

Are there any downsides of jaw filler?

The upside to filler can also potentially be its downside, depending on your goals: It’s not as drastic or long-lasting a procedure as, say, liposuction or a chin implant, so you may not be able to achieve the level of change you’re looking for. And of course, as with most medical procedures, there’s always a risk for complications.

“There are important blood vessels and nerves that cross the jawline,” explains Dr. Zeichner, and if those are accidentally injected, there’s a risk for vascular occlusion that can restrict blood flow. That’s why “a physician, familiar with facial anatomy, is a must to avoid rare but potentially serious complications,” he says.

Dr. Zeichner adds that “more common side effects can include nodules in the skin or asymmetries between the left and the right sides.” You may also likely experience swelling, bruising and tenderness around the injection site for up to a week.

How long does jaw filler last?

The ballpark figure is one-and-a-half to two years, but “injectable fillers can last anywhere from six months to several years,” says Dr. Zeichner. When injected at deeper levels, especially in areas where there’s not as much movement like the jawline, fillers tend to last for much longer periods of time.”

How much does it cost to get jaw filler?

According to the dermatologists we spoke with, fillers can range in price between $800 and $1,500 per syringe, depending on the product and where you live.

As far as how many syringes of jawline filler you’ll need: it’s totally dependent on your natural anatomy and the results you want. For example, “It is not uncommon for me to inject four or more syringes in a single patient,” says Dr. Zeichner, while also noting that some patients may only need half a syringe to get their desired outcome.

Dr. Zeichner says it’s key to remember that “it takes five syringes to give you one teaspoon worth of volume,” and since jawline “fillers are injected deep, it often takes larger volumes to give you the desired outcome,” so this particular procedure may require more syringes (and therefore boast a higher price tag) than other facial injection sites.

Who should — and shouldn’t — get jaw filler?

Jaw filler is perfectly fine for anyone who wants it and believes the procedure is worth it, but Dr. Engelman recommends it particularly for “patients who have a weak jawline, have jowling as a result of aging or genetics or people who just want more structure.”

She adds, “while fillers do wonders, there are also limitations. I tell my patients that fillers can enhance, but they are not going to change you.” If you’re looking for a more drastic change in your appearance — or, of course, if you don’t have any qualms with your jawline in the first place — jaw filler may not be for you.

Does jawline filler hurt?

“The good news about these fillers is that they come premixed with lidocaine, so with the exception of the initial prick, you will only be feeling pressure for the injection and when we massage the product,” says Dr. Engelman.

While the pain level is low during the actual procedure, it may feel strange as the filler enters, and the physical manipulation of the filler immediately following injection can be a bit uncomfortable. Expect soreness, swelling and bruising for at least one week following the procedure — it can feel like downtime after minor dental work.

What to expect at your appointment

First, you’ll have a consultation with your injector — a dermatologist, cosmetic surgeon, physician’s assistant or nurse practitioner — so you can explain your goals and get on the same page about realistic results. During this time, your injector should observe your bone structure, how your facial muscles work and ask questions to understand your lifestyle and habits to make a treatment plan that will best suit your desires and give you the most favorable results.

Then, your face will be cleansed and wiped down with alcohol before a topical numbing solution is applied. After 30 minutes, the gel is removed and your face is cleaned once more before the injections are administered. Your injector will massage the product immediately post-injection to ensure it’s in the correct spot.

Before (top) and after (bottom) jaw filler.

There may be a series of injections along the jawline and into the chin as part of the procedure, and your injector may suggest adding filler to other parts of the face, like the cheeks, to help balance for facial optimization. You may hear some crackling as the filler enters, which can be surprising but is normal. The entire appointment will likely take an hour or so.

The Barbie movie is filled with this one designer brand and there

If you’re one of the people lucky enough to have already seen the Barbie movie since its release on July 21, then you might have noticed something particularly interesting about the movie’s main character…she is regularly dressed in designer wares, and more specifically, Chanel.

From skirt suits to handbags, necklaces and earrings, Margot Robbie’s ‘stereotypical’ Barbie character is laden with CC logos throughout the film, and as it turns out, that’s no coincidence.

Announced this week, Chanel revealed it had actually collaborated with Barbie on the film to provide five of the looks seen on screen. Of course, given that Margot Robbie is a global ambassador for the brand, the collaboration feels like a natural extension of her partnership with the storied French house.

In an exclusive interview, Margot Robbie spoke with Chanel about the collaboration, explaining, “The Barbie legacy is so intrinsically tied with fashion brands throughout history and wearing high fashion definitely feels right for the character.”

Robbie continued, revealing that she had the chance to wear some extremely iconic looks, including a Chanel tweed suit originally sported on the Spring/Summer 1995 runway by Claudia Schiffer.

“There were some incredible outfits that I actually got to wear that Claudia Schiffer herself (who is kind of like a real-life Barbie) wore,” Robbie said. “One of the archival suits that I wore had a little label on the inside saying “Claudia,” and it was like “wow.”‘

Aside from this incredible tweed suit, throughout the film Robbie also sports a heart-shaped pink Chanel bag, as well as a logo-emblazoned Chanel necklace. The statement jewellery piece was also first seen on Chanel’s Spring/Summer 1995 runway, modelled by none other than supermodel Shalom Harlow.

As a couture recreation of the faux costume jewellery, we’d wear as kids, the necklace features different coloured gemstones and intricately placed drop pearls. For the movie, the costume department added a large pink stone at the centre of the necklace elevating its statement status even further.

Evidently, audiences have been paying attention, as since the movie premiere searches for the Chanel accessories featured have skyrocketed. According to research conducted by Wethrift, searches for ‘Vintage Chanel Necklace’ have increased by +3000% since the movie hit screens, while searches for ‘Barbie Chanel bag heart’ have risen by +3950%.

It’s clear that Barbie and Chanel are a match made in sartorial heaven. If you’d like to emulate the look, keep scrolling to shop some Barbie-inspired Chanel pieces below.

Glycolic Acid: What Dermatologists Want You to Know Before Using It

If you are looking to simplify your skincare routine with a product that provides all the benefits of minimized pores, younger-looking skin and a clear, radiant complexion, keep your eyes peeled (pun intended) for glycolic acid. This miraculous ingredient is an all-in-one solution to your greatest skin troubles from aging to acne — glycolic acid takes care of it all. It’s one ingredient that you should definitely consider adding to your skincare playbook.

So, what is glycolic acid?

Glycolic acid is an alpha-hydroxy acid (AHA), an organic, carbon-containing molecule. According to Jessica Krant, a board-certified dermatologist of the Laser & Skin Surgery Center of New York, this molecule naturally occurs in sugar cane and fruits. Some other AHAs you may be familiar with include lactic acid and citrus acid. Note that these should not be confused with beta hydroxy acids (BHAs), such as salicylic acid. While AHAs are water soluble and are mainly used to chemically exfoliate skin, BHAs are fat soluble and can penetrate into pores to unclog blackheads. AHAs are generally incorporated into peels and toners while BHAs are typically seen in acne control products, including cleansers and moisturizers.

“Glycolic acid helps to separate the connections between keratinocytes [skin cells] in the outer layers of skin without rough, mechanical exfoliation techniques and promotes exfoliation,” Dr. Krant says. “In this way, it can artificially speed up cell turnover and bring fresher, younger cells to the surface.”

What are the benefits of glycolic acid?

“I think people underestimate how much glycolic acid does,” says Sapna Palep, a board-certified dermatologist and founder of Spring Street Dermatology in NYC. “It works for anti-aging. It’s very good for acne. It stops acne from the get-go — from the comedone stage. [Patients] come to me like, ‘I hate these blackheads on my nose, and my pores feel so big.’ I put them on glycolic right away.”

As Dr. Palep says, this skincare superstar has a long list of benefits, including:

  • Reduces fine lines and wrinkles. “Glycolic acid, at concentrations consistent to those found in skincare products, has been shown to minimize the appearance of photo-aged skin,” says Danusia Wnek, Senior Chemist at the GH Beauty Lab. In a clinical study, an 8% glycolic acid formula showed significant improvement in overall photo-damaged skin, and the tester feedback echoed those results: according to a questionnaire completed after the study, testers noted that the formula significantly improved fine lines, amongst other skin attributes, after 22 weeks.
  • Minimizes the appearance of pores. “This happens by removing dead skin cells that can get caught inside of them,” says Corey L. Hartman, M.D., founder of Skin Wellness Dermatology in Birmingham, Alabama. “While nothing can actually change the size of your pores, when they are clean and not clogged with oil and dead skin they appear smaller.”
  • Removes dead skin cells. “Glycolic acid dissolves the bonds that hold the cells together,” says Dr. Hartman.
  • Helps fight acne. “By exfoliating the top layer of dead skin on the skin’s surface, you minimize the risk that the old, dead skin gets mixed with sebum, which creates acne,” says Dr. Hartman.
  • Evens out skin tone. “Glycolic acid has been shown to statistically improve discoloration and skin texture at a level of 5% when compared to a placebo in this study,” shares Wnek.

Another bonus: glycolic acid is safe for new mothers to use, says Dr. Palep. Since certain beauty ingredients, such as BHAs and retinol, should be avoided during pregnancy and breastfeeding, “it’s a lifesaver for women during this period of time.”

The best way to use glycolic acid

“Glycolic acid can be found in all sorts of products, from washes to toners to medical grade chemical peels,” says Adarsh Vijay Mudgil, M.D., a board-certified dermatologist and dermatopathologist, and founder of Mudgil Dermatology in NYC. “The use really depends on the exact preparation.”

Regardless of whatever product you choose, you will see benefits from any concentration percentage, says Dr. Krant. “Glycolic acid works every time you use it, and it begins to work immediately.” Dr. Krant advises to only use products with a maximum concentration of 10% at home. “Stronger formulations can be applied by your board-certified dermatologist in-office, but should only be applied by people with extensive experience and training in chemical peels.”

Are there any side effects of glycolic acid?

People usually don’t experience side effects from using glycolic acid, but for “those with dry or sensitive skin, it can be irritating,” says Dr. Mudgil. “Low percentage washes can be used daily without issue in those with oily skin, whereas medical grade peels may only be tolerated once a month.”

Although it’s uncommon, the worst side effects that people can experience is due to uncareful use of higher percentage glycolic acid products. “Glycolic acid is an acid that can burn or scar skin,” warns Dr. Krant. “Excessive redness, a lingering burning sensation, skin turning grayish-white or — worst-case scenario — skin blistering and sloughing off immediately are all signs of possible danger and permanent scarring.”

Additionally, “people with darker skin should be aware that overuse of glycolic acid can lead to hyperpigmentation — the exact opposite of what most people are using glycolic acid for,” says Dr. Hartman. “People with darker skin have a higher percentage of melanin in their skin and small irritations likes redness and peeling can trigger an inflammatory response, which can often lead to hyperpigmentation.” If you are concerned about this, he recommends starting slow and using a glycolic acid product with a low percentage, once per week. If your body tolerates the product well, increase the usage to one to two times per week.

Can you use glycolic acid daily?

“As a leave-on treatment, I don’t recommend using glycolic acid every day because it can cause excessive irritation,” says Wnek. “Incorporate it slowly into your routine and work your way up to every other day or every two days, if tolerated.”

Wnek notes that the one time it can be used daily is in cleansers at lower concentrations, “but again slowly incorporate it into your routine,” she advises.

Is glycolic acid better than vitamin C and retinol?

“Glycolic acid is a great complement to a skincare routine that uses vitamin C and retinol, but I wouldn’t say it is better than either ingredient, or that should you replace using vitamin C and retinol with glycolic acid,” says Dr. Hartman.

Which ingredients to avoid with glycolic acid

Dr. Hartman advises against using glycolic acid with salicylic acid, vitamin C, retinol or benzoyl peroxide to minimize the risk of irritation. “You can use those ingredients in other parts of your routine, but not at the same time, on the same day,” he explains. “For example, if you regularly apply a retinol serum at night, but want to try glycolic acid, apply the glycolic acid product and skip your retinol for a couple of nights. If you have sensitive skin, skip using any other kind of exfoliating product on the day you use glycolic acid.”

The difference between glycolic acid and salicylic acid

As we mentioned above, glycolic acid is an AHA and salicylic acid is a BHA. “Glycolic acid molecules are smaller and they work by exfoliating the top layers of the skin, helping skin shed old, dead skin cells and reveal newer skin underneath, which leads to a more even skin texture and tone,” says Dr. Hartman.

Salicylic acid is the most common BHA and is typically used to treat and prevent breakouts. “It is found in all types of formulations for acne-prone skin including cleansers and moisturizers,” says Wnek. “Salicylic acid also exfoliates, but it does it by removing excess oil, which helps clear congested skin, reducing clogged pores and minimizing blackheads.”

Does glycolic acid have benefits for hair or body?

Yes, glycolic acid can work its magic on more than just the face. “Products with glycolic acid can be used successfully on the body, particularly underarms where the exfoliating properties of the molecules can help brighten skin,” says Dr. Hartman. Many people who shave under their arms may find that the skin is darker there. “This is due to repeated ‘injury’ to the area through microscopic nicks from the razor blade to the skin’s surface,” he explains. “The body’s natural immune response sends signals to the area to repair those tiny cuts, which can lead to an overproduction of melanin, darkening the skin.” Glycolic acid helps to exfoliate, brighten and smooth this skin, which may ease shaving efforts.

How to choose the best glycolic acid products

Since the best products for you will depend on your skin type, you should always consult your dermatologist first. If your skin is more sensitive or dry, look for products that have a lower glycolic acid percentage (around 5%).

It’s also important to take extra measures to protect yourself from sun damage. Glycolic acid, along with other AHAs, increase your skin’s sensitivity to harmful UV rays. Be sure to generously apply sunscreen, wear hats and stay in the shade to reduce your sun exposure throughout the day.

On the new collection, Sally Ambrose, Hobbs’ Brand Director explained, “Looking ahead to when summer fades into autumn, this Limited Edition collection caters for shifting seasons. Offering outfit foundations alongside moment-making pieces that cleverly balance trend inspiration with enduring appeal.”

Personally, our favourite pieces within the range include a cream a-line midi skirt, which perfectly encapsulates this season’s ‘quiet luxury’ aesthetic. The item is understated, yet stylish and could easily fit into the minimalist, elevated wardrobe of someone like  Sofia Richie.

Aside from that, we’re also loving the Chrissy Mary Janes. There is no denying that ballet pumps and flats are truly having a moment right now, and this pair, in particular, looks very similar to a style seen on Dua Lipa recently.

Indeed, Hobbs is certainly excelling right now when it comes to creating wardrobe staples you’ll want to wear on repeat. Keep scrolling to shop the best pieces from Hobbs’ latest Limited Edition collection, as selected by a fashion editor.

So, when it comes to makeup, it taps into the minimal no-makeup makeup vibe that’s been trending for the past two years. Here’s how to rock a look that will turn you into the main character:

– Prime Time: Lay the foundation for a flawless face by applying Erborian – Pink Primer & Care. Think of it as your makeup’s BFF – it smooths out your skin, blurs imperfections, moisturises your skin and helps your makeup last longer.

– Glow Getter: Now it’s time to turn up the radiance with a touch of Rodial – Soft Focus Glow Drops. This serum combines skincare actives with a subtle pearlescence to illuminate the complexion and achieve a lit-from-within glow – hello, luminosity!

– Complexion Perfection: Opt for a lightweight foundation or a tinted moisturiser with SPF, such as Hydropeptide – Solar Defense Tinted SPF 30, that adapts to any skin tone, letting your natural beauty shine through. It also moisturises, protects, evens out and brightens your complexion.

– Lash Love: Flutter those lashes, darling! Swipe on a lengthening or volumizing mascara to instantly open up your eyes and give you that doe-eyed effect.

– Statement Lips: Your lips deserve some love too! Pick a lip colour that speaks to your mood – whether it’s a classic red for confidence, a soft nude for a natural look, or maybe a bright pink, in line with the Barbie-mania. Don’t forget to moisturise with lip balm beforehand for a perfectly smooth pout.

Whether you’re rocking a fresh-faced glow or going all out with vibrant colours, let your makeup be an extension of your personality and make you feel like the leading star in your own story.
