The Princess of Wales just made a case for statement earrings, and hers are surprisingly affordable

The Prince and Princess of Wales were out today to attend the fourth day of Royal Ascot 2023 at Ascot Racecourse.

Alongside other royal family remembers—including Princess Beatrice of York and Sophie, Duchess of Edinburgh—Princess Kate took to the course dressed in her absolute best. For the sunny afternoon, The Princess opted for a bright red v-neck gown with puff sleeve detailing and matched her look alongside a wide-brim red fascinator.

The royal’s hat was created by milliner to the stars, Philip Treacy, while her dress was a bespoke number courtesy of Alexander Queen. Princess Beatrice donned a floral Monique Lhuillier look, while Duchess Sophie opted for a pink dress by Suzannah London.

However, while Princess Kate’s brightly-hued outfit was nothing short of show-stopping, it was her earrings that truly captured our attention.

The Princess was spotted in a pair of gold statement earrings, which featured intricate detailing. While it would be easy to assume the Princess’s earrings were sourced from a luxury designer brand (or were even a family heirloom), Kate’s signature accessory today can actually be attributed to contemporary French fashion brand Sézane.

The label is known as a favourite among chic French women and is beloved for its timeless appeal and affordable wardrobe staples. In fact, every pair of earrings on the brand’s website retails for less than £100.

While Kate’s exact earrings are unfortunately sold out, there are several similar pairs available on the brand’s website right now that won’t break the bank. Oversize gold hoops start at around £70, while statement resin earrings can be added to your cart for just £55.

Last week, during Trooping The Colour, The Princess of Wales opted to wear a pair of sapphire and diamond drop earrings, which once belonged to the late Princess Diana. And while we loved the sweet sentiment of that moment, it’s also refreshing to see the Princess opt for items that are a little more affordable.

Searches for linen skirts are on the rise, and I

There has been a lot of talk about linen recently, and given the sweltering heatwave that hit the UK over the last week, we’re hardly surprised.

As a fabric, linen is the perfect item to turn to during the warmer months, particularly given the fact that it is extremely breathable and doesn’t tend to retain heat. Already this month we have brought you the best linen shirts, linen dresses and linen trousers, and today we’re turning our attention to another wardrobe staple: linen skirts.

Unsurprisingly, the popularity of linen skirts is rising by the minute. According to Google search data, searches for the item have risen by 33% year on year, with specific searches for white linen maxi skirts rising by 120% in the last 12 months.

And the data doesn’t stop at just searches. UK high-street retailer Whistles has noticed linen sales rising year on year, too. According the the brand “sales on linen are up +34% on the year,” with a rep from Whistles explaining that linen skirts in particular are up 140% year on year.

From mini styles to maxi lengths, this summer there are so many options around if you’re looking to add a linen skirt to your regular rotation. I find a midi iteration of the item just perfect for days at the office, while a mini skirt is ideal for weekend wear.

Maxi looks—like the one seen one seen on Kendall last summer—are also trending at the moment. After the fashion industry’s obsession with all things micro mini last summer, we’re set to see the opposite extreme take over this season. Maxi length are on the rise and will look exceptionally chic paired alongside plain tank tops in block colour shades.

From beach to bar (and even office), it’s true that the versatility of linen skirts is truly endless. Keep scrolling to shop my favourite linen skirts this season.

Gwyneth Paltrow

Gwyneth Paltrow has been style icon for decades. The star shot to fame in the late nineties, winning an Oscar for her role in Shakespeare in Love, at the age of just 26.

In her time, Paltrow has attended countless awards shows, premieres and ceremonies and is widely regarded as quite the fashion industry veteran. So of course, it makes sense that she would have an extensive wardrobe archive to match.

From her iconic pink Ralph Lauren Oscars dress to the green co-ord she wore in Great Expectations, Paltrow has had no shortage of memorable outfits, yet one of her most talked about looks undoubtedly has to be the outfit she wore to the 2002 Oscars.

For the event, Paltrow donned a long black gown by Alexander McQueen which featured a shirred transparent bodice and full skirt. At the time, Paltrow styled the look alongside dark eyeliner and a quintessentially noughties side braid hairstyle.

With fashion’s current obsession with all things Y2K, it would hardly come as a surprise to learn that this look is still as trendy as ever and evidently, Paltrow’s daughter is also a fan of her mother’s vintage gown.

Taking to Instagram lately, Paltrow shared an image of her 19-year-old daughter, Apple Martin, trying on the gown, proving that she is a true spitting image of her mother.

The pair look almost identical in the look, which Paltrow revealed garnered quite a few negative comments at the time. Speaking to Vogue, Paltrow explained, “People were really critical. I think at the time it was too goth… I think it sort of shocked people, but I like it.”

Apple Martin is not the only celebrity child to be taking inspiration from her mother’s archive. In fact, earlier this year we spotted Salma Hayek’s daughter in one of her mother’s iconic gowns, too.

At the 2023 Oscars, Hayek’s daughter Valentina sported her mum’s strapless red Isaac Mizrahi dress from 1997, looking every bit as glamorous as her mother did at the time.

More and More Men Are Looking Into Laser Hair Removal, But Is It a Good Idea?

Body hair — some guys love it, some guys loathe it. If you’re feeling a little too fuzzy for comfort, you could shave, you could pull a Steve Carell in The 40-Year-Old Virgin and get waxed or you could pursue a high-tech option — laser hair removal.

According to Mayo Clinic, laser hair removal works when a concentrated beam of light is directed through a laser at an area of the body with unwanted hair. The light is absorbed by the pigment, or melanin, in the hair itself. The beam of light heats up the skin, which damages follicles in the skin so they can either no longer grow hair, or so the growth process is significantly delayed.

Although it’s estimated that 82% of those who get professional laser hair removal are women, “laser hair removal is just as successful in men as it is in women,” says Evan Rieder MD, a board certified dermatologist and psychiatrist in New York City. In some cases, the process is more effective in men. “Some guys do better with laser hair removal on the face than women do, as the higher density of oil glands in men allows for better healing,” Dr. Reider adds. Men also seek laser hair removal for their backs, chests, legs (especially if they’re involved in certain sports, such as swimming) and private areas.

If you’re a guy who’s interested in laser hair removal, it’s important to get evaluated by a cosmetic dermatologist who is experienced in the procedure. “Beauty clinics” that offer laser hair removal may be plentiful online, but that doesn’t mean they’re safe — an untrained technician can hurt someone severely.

Here are other key facts a guy needs to know before having laser hair removal to help you get the best results.

1. You really have to commit.

Laser hair removal is pretty much permanent after a couple of sessions, which can be as short as 10 minutes, depending on the body part. “After three or four treatments, about 90% of the hair in the area of your body will be reduced,” says Jill S. Waibel, MD, medical director of Miami Dermatology and Laser Institute in Miami, Florida, and subsection chief of dermatology at Baptist Hospital. “Many men choose to have laser hair removal on their backs, specifically.”

There can be situations in which more treatments are necessary, however. If you have ingrown hair, additional treatment time will probably be required. The texture of a man’s hair can also make a difference. “Due to testosterone, men tend to have thicker and denser hairs than women do, and may need more treatments,” says Emily L. Guo, MD, FAAD, a board-certified dermatologist at Dermatology & Laser Surgery Center in Houston. “There may also be a shorter interval in which touch up or maintenance treatment is needed after an initial treatment series. Typical follow-up treatments are scheduled anywhere between 4–6 weeks later, to allow time for hairs to regrow in their cycle.”

2. Laser hair removal can be pricey.

According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, the cost of laser hair removal treatment vary widely, depending on the area of the country and how many sessions are needed. Patients can also be charged for additional procedure costs, as well as for medications they need related to treatment. All in all, laser hair removal can add up to thousands of dollars, an important consideration when you’re deciding if it’s right for you.

3. Skin tone and hair color should be considered.

“In general, when the hair is thicker, the hair is dark and there is contrast between the skin and hair color — such as light skin and dark hair — the results are more predictable,” says Dr. Reider. “Men with darker skin tones can still get laser hair removal, although the side effect risk profile is higher. People with extremely fine hair or light or white hair should not have the procedure done, as the laser is unlikely to be effective. The laser targets pigment, so it’s not effective for white hair — and if the skin is heat-sensitive or tanned from the sun, it increases the risk for a laser burn.”

It’s important to ask the doctor what kind of equipment they’ll be using. “Darker skin tones require a longer wavelength laser,” says Dr. Waibel. “This is key, because it’s necessary to cool the upper layer of skin to avoid hyperpigmentation.”

4. There might be side effects.

Minor side effects lasting about 1–3 days can include swelling, red skin and discomfort, says the American Academy of Dermatology. Rarely, you could experience skin blisters, or a cold sore outbreak if you have herpes simplex. Infections and scarring can also occur if laser hair removal is not performed correctly.

5. Doing the right prep is crucial.

“Men should be aware that it’s important to shave before laser hair removal appointments so that the laser energy can reach the bulb of the hair underneath the skin, rather than just singeing the hairs on its surface,” says Dr. Guo. “Don’t wax or pluck any hairs beforehand, though, as that removes the target for the laser, and will reduce the efficacy of the treatment.”

It’s important to be careful when spending time in the sun, both before and after a treatment. “Using quality sunscreen is important as well, to reduce the risk of unwanted side effects,” Dr. Guo continues.

Also, showering isn’t advised before the appointment. Once body hair has gotten wet, its growing pattern may be harder to see. The dermatologist will want to examine how hairs lie on the body to be able to administer the treatment correctly.

andresr//Getty Images

6. The pain is very manageable.

Comfort is a priority when you go to a qualified practitioner. “We use topical lidocaine as a numbing agent,” explains Dr. Waibel. “Don’t use any lidocaine yourself before you come, though — for safety’s sake, your dermatologist must numb you.” The amount of lidocaine used depends on how dense the hair is, plus where on the body it will be removed. It’s important to discuss pain tolerance with the doctor, too, so they can gauge if more numbing will be needed.

Laser hair removal should not feel that bad, though. “The laser typically feels like a rubber band snapping sensation,” says Dr. Guo. The laser will also feel a little warm. Many doctors who administer the treatment are also patients, so they understand what you’ll experience. “Having treated many people and experienced laser hair removal myself, I can tell you that the procedure is quite tolerable,” says Dr. Reider.

7. The actual process is straightforward.

Before a treatment starts, “the hair is shaved down so that only tiny stubble remains,” says Dr. Reider. “The patient puts on protective goggles, and then pulses of high energy laser light are sequentially applied to the areas with hair.”

The equipment sounds like a vacuum. “We work on one body part at a time, and we take care to make sure patients don’t breathe in any of the laser fumes during a procedure,” says Dr. Waibel. “This is because protein in burning hair is carcinogenic.”

8. Some medical conditions can be helped by laser hair removal.

“Laser hair removal is a very reliable and excellent treatment for medical issues like folliculitis, which is the inflammation of hair follicles, or pseudofolliculitis barbae, where hairs repeatedly grow inward and causes inflammation, hyperpigmentation and scarring,” says Dr. Reider.

If you’re experiencing any unusual hair growth symptoms before the treatment, though, you should see your regular physician immediately — and certainly before any laser hair removal. Sudden hair growth can be due to a range of medical problems, from hormonal disorders to tumors to medication reactions, so the cause should be diagnosed and treated first and foremost.

9. Laser hair removal can be done at home.

Yes, there are at-home devices available, but note: They have less power than those used by a dermatologist, and because of this more frequent use is needed.

Also, it’s recommended that you consult with your doctor to get the okay before trying laser hair removal on your own–and of course, it’s in your interest to use a safe product.

These four options below were all cleared by the FDA and vetted by The Good Housekeeping Institute’s beauty analysts.

I

As a fashion editor, there are a few outfit formulas I come to rely upon for busy weekday mornings. Having trusted go-to looks (or work uniforms as they’re often referred to) can take the hassle out of getting dressed, seamlessly helping to streamline your morning routine.

During the warm summer months, there is one look I find myself constantly returning to for office days, and that is midi skirts and tank tops. The look is polished, yet effortless and requires very little additional styling (aside from a few accessories).

Evidently, I’m not alone, as this week in particular, I have noticed so many other women donning the same outfit formula on my morning commute. In fact, on one train carriage alone this week, I spotted four different people in the midi skirt and tank top look, I too was wearing.

The beauty of this look is the fact it can be mixed and matched endlessly. Particularly, if you have a fairly healthy rotation of tank tops and various midi skirts.

For me personally, I love opting for a printed midi skirt in a fun pattern and pairing it alongside a plain top in a block colour. However, you can also invert the look and pair a printed top alongside a plain skirt.

When it comes to midi skirts, as a petite woman there are a few brands I seriously rely on. Whistles recently released its first petite range and I have been living in the brand’s linen midi (you can shop it below). For women on the shorter side, Reformation also has a chic selection of bias-cut petite midi skirts in various prints and shades.

In the tank top department, the high street is filled with worthy selections. I personally like my tops with a little bit of elastane in them, so they stretch and mould to the body perfectly. Shades of black and white will always be staple colours, yet this season I’m also gravitating towards pastel hues like baby blue and soft yellow.

Without further do, keep scrolling to shop midi skirts and tank tops (aka my go-to summer office outfit formula).

How We Select the Best Beauty Products of the Year

There are thousands of beauty products already on the market and new ones launching every day. For our annual Good Housekeeping Beauty Awards program, the Good Housekeeping Institute’s goal is to highlight the best-performing skincare products, haircare products, and makeup products, as well as the best beauty tools, professional treatments and beauty technology on the market.

How are the products for Good Housekeeping’s Beauty Awards tested?

The Good Housekeeping Institute Beauty Lab evaluates the formulation, claims and any company or clinical data behind each beauty product. In the next stage, the products with the highest potential are assessed for efficacy and performance using consumer and/or Lab testing with state-of-the-art scientific instruments.

What are the launch date requirements for beauty products to be considered?

We will consider beauty products that have launched at any time, but they must be permanently available through April and May 2024 to be considered. For products launching after the submission deadline, please contact ghbeautyawards@hearst.com regarding final packaging availability and arrangement for possible later product submission.

What beauty product categories are eligible to be submitted?

The GH Beauty Lab will consider face and body skincare products, haircare and styling products, makeup and nail products, beauty tools, fragrances, teeth whitening products, beauty technology, and professional beauty services/treatments (including spas) for the GH Beauty Awards.

Products that currently hold the Good Housekeeping Seal with a license active through June 30th, 2024 may be exempt from the entry fee. Please contact Good Housekeeping Seal Project Manager Tamara Smith (Tamara.Smith@hearst.com) to confirm eligibility. Products that are Good Housekeeping Beauty Lab test winners or past Good Housekeeping Beauty Award winners will automatically be considered for the Beauty Awards and do not need to enter or pay a fee.

How can I submit beauty products to be reviewed for the Beauty Awards?

You must submit an entry and payment form and one sample of each product (if applicable) in order to be considered for the Good Housekeeping Beauty Awards. More information about submitting product samples is available below and via the entry form link. If you have multiple products to submit, you must fill out a separate form for each product. You can then pay for all submissions under one payment.

  2. Click “create an account and apply.” Create your account by entering your email and a password.
  3. Follow instructions for submitting your product. Please input all required fields.

  5. Once finished, you will receive an email confirming your submission and a link to edit and update it if needed. (For help with issues regarding the submission and payment platform, please contact alec.scherma@hearst.com.)

Is there a limit to the number of products I can submit?

No, you may submit as many products as you’d like. Note that you will have to fill out a new application form and pay a separate submission fee for each product entered.

How many samples will need to be provided?

5 fashion designers on the summer dress trends set to take over in 2023

Given we’re in the midst of our first heatwave of the year, it’s safe to say that summer weather is finally here. With the new season on the horizon now is the time to take stock of your wardrobe and start thinking about the items you’ll need for your summer capsule.

Of course, summer dresses are always a good place to start. Dresses are a key element of almost every summer wardrobe, acting as the perfectly polished, all-in-one outfit that can be styled in a snap. So, exactly what kind of dresses are trending for summer 2023? To understand the answer to this question, I called upon the experts.

Speaking to the creative minds and fashion designers behind some of my favourite brands—including Faithfull The Brand, FarmRio, Rixo, Rhode and Alémais—I got an insight into what we should expect to see everywhere this season. And lucky for you, I don’t plan to gatekeep.

From the return of minimal ’90s-inspired styles to a focus on artisanal and artful detailing, the summer dress trends of 2023 are as varied and versatile as they come. Maxi lengths are set to be omnipresent, while strapless silhouettes are also due for a resurgence.

Without further ado, keep scrolling for the biggest summer dress trends of 2023, according to five fashion designers.

Faithfull The Brand

“What we are excited about this summer is slip-style hemlines and bias cuts,” explained Faithfull The Brand’s co-directors Sarah-Jane Abrahams and Helle Them-Enger. “They are both elegant and modern cuts; perfect for the cool girl who wants effortless sophistication.”

The pair continued, explaining we’re set to see slip dresses in a range of versatile, lightweight fabrications. “We also anticipate the maxi dress to return as a key summer staple. Its no-fuss, timeless cut allows for ease of transition from beach-to-bar.”

“And finally,” the pair ended, “this summer will see a resurgence of the ’90s styles we all know and love. We welcome interesting detailing in high cuts, halter necklines and open backs. Taking influence from past eras and drawing inspiration from retro styling and icons, we expect dresses to emulate the ultimate sunseeker aesthetic.”

Rhode

Phoebe Vickers and Purna Khatua, the founders of Rhode, also believe the ’90s are set to be a huge point of inspiration this summer. “Our customers are loving ’90s mini dresses this season,” Vickers and Khatua tell Marie Claire. “Simple, flattering and fun and perfect for dressing up or down depending on your style, plus they look great with a trainer or a heel.”

“Mermaid-core is a runway trend that’s going to be big this summer and we’ve put our own Rhode take on this through our prints as well as upcoming sequin and embellished applique pieces,” the pair explained. “And the strapless dress is also going to be popular this season – it’s something that we are seeing a lot of pick up on. Some favourites from our very own Spring/Summer 2023 collection include the The Giovanna Dress & The Lisa Dress.”

Alemais

Emerging Australian designer Alémais has its own distinct artistic aesthetic and for 2023, the brand predicts the rise of versatile pieces with a unique point of view.

“A shirt dress is a classic favourite of mine,” explained Alémais co-founder and creative director, Lesleigh Jermanus. “It’s so versatile to wear, timeless and I see so much value in this style which can be worn in a casual chic way or more sophisticated by changing accessories. In our Pre-Fall ‘Superhero’ Collection we have numerous shirt dresses in eclectic prints.”

“I’m really drawn to statement dresses right now,” Jermanus adds. “Something with an artful silhouette and luxurious hand feel, such as our Guardian Midi Dress, Leonard Fringed Dress and Dana Midi Dress. I’m always attracted to dramatic sleeves to make an impact and these are all perfect for a summer wedding, long lunch or a garden party.”

Jermanus explained that collaboration is a key element in Alémais’ designs, highlighting that this year they’ve worked with Paris-based illustrator Lou Benesch. “Each season we work with various artists to create unique prints, so naturally my final stand-out trend has to be one of our artist collab prints!”

“Storytelling is central to the collection,” she adds. “Lou’s drawings depict mythical beasts and fantastical creatures which are found in the Lou and Seeker stories for this season. They are such special conversational pieces, which will be cherished for seasons to come.”

FarmRio

“Summer dresses are our love language at FARM Rio,” explains Head of Design, Thalita Cotrofe. “For 2023, we predict low-waist, cut-out and artisanal styles being the key trends of the season.”

The brand is known for it’s elaborate, colourful designers and this season Cotrofe highlights that it’s all about dresses that make a statement. “The Sand Jungle Midi Dress, for example, is an effortless style that packs a punch, cut from breezy linen and adorned with a jungle print and tassel hem.”

“We create one-of-a-kind pieces, for the woman with a free spirit and love of colour.”

Rixo

Versatility is key in the Rixo world this summer, co-founder Henrietta Rix tells Marie Claire. “I really believe people want more out of their clothes now, rather than just a one-time wear/ occasion purchase. Having key dresses you know you’ll wear over and over again is only going to be more important to customers.”

Aside from purely design-related trends, Rix believes eco-conscious consumers will turn to renting as a means to bring new life to their existing wardrobes this summer. “I believe renting summer dresses will also be really popular this summer, especially for occasions like weddings. We’ve just introduced rental for key occasions and bridal styles, and it’s an area of the business I’m really excited about.”
