The Met Gala

For fashion devotees, the first Monday in May is always a significant date in the calendar as it marks the occasion of the Metropolitan Museums’ annual Costume Institute Gala. (Or the Met Gala (opens in new tab), as it’s more commonly referred to.)

The event is considered the super bowl of fashion or the fashion Oscars, if you will. Each year, the guest list reads like the who’s who of Hollywood’s A-list, with celebrities partnered alongside the world’s top fashion designers.

Of course, many will know that the Met Gala always has a specific theme, which is a reflection of the exhibition shown within the museum. From 2019’s theme, Camp: Notes on Fashion, to 2016’s theme Manus x Machina: Fashion in an Age of Technology, attendees of the gala also often dress to adhere to the chosen subject of the exhibition.

And this year, it seems we best prepare ourselves to see a lot of Chanel, as the exhibition’s theme has been announced as “Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty.”

Alongside a theme, each year the Met Gala has a panel of famous hosts, who act as co-chairs alongside Anna Wintour. Today it’s been revealed that this year’s hosts will be Michaela Coel, Penélope Cruz, Dua Lipa and Roger Federer.

Karl Lagerfeld, who passed away (opens in new tab) in 2019, was best known for being the creative director of Chanel. The designer helmed the brand from 1983 until his passing. It is undeniably his time at Chanel (opens in new tab) that made Lagerfeld a household name, however, what many don’t realise is that he was also the creative director of Fendi between 1965-2019, and worked at Chloé in the 1970s.

According to Vogue, the exhibit is not set to be a standard retrospective of Lagerfeld’s designs. It will focus strongly on how the designer used sketches as a part of his design process and depict the way his sketches were brought to life. For the exhibit, 150 of Lagerfeld’s designs will be presented alongside their original sketches.

This Met Gala will be a true celebration of Lagerfeld’s legacy, we can’t wait to see the way attendees honour his work.

How to Plop Your Curls, According to a Pro

Some hair techniques are universal. For example, no matter if your hair is straight, curly, wavy or coily, applying shampoo and conditioner is pretty much the same across the board. But when it comes to washing, drying and styling our tresses, those of us with curly hair know there’s a whole lot of effort, planning and preparation that goes into getting bouncy, flawless spirals. No, we don’t just wake up like this (most days, at least).

One of the most popular drying techniques for curly hair right now is plopping. While the name may be strange, it really is like magic for wavy, curly and coily strands, and it works no matter if you have a short or long hairstyle. The trend took TikTok by storm, with videos amassing up to millions of views.

This content is imported from Tiktok. You may be able to find the same content in another format, or you may be able to find more information, at their web site.

If you’re not familiar with plopping or you just need some help on where to start, look no further. We tapped a curly hair expert to get the ins and outs of how to plop hair.

First, what is plopping?

Plopping is a drying method used to keep curls intact before or after styling curly hair, says Mia Emilio, hairstylist at Rezo Salon in New York City. “Plopping uses a T-shirt or microfiber towel to keep curls defined while removing excess water from the hair before air-drying or diffusing.” Bonus: It’s also a great way to get sopping wet hair off of your neck and shoulders while you’re getting dressed or working around the house.

This content is imported from Tiktok. You may be able to find the same content in another format, or you may be able to find more information, at their web site.

When is the best time to plop hair?

Emilio recommends plopping after product application, whether it be hair gel, mousse or any other leave-in product. But those with fine hair may want to plop before applying products to remove excess water that’s weighing the hair down. Like most things with curly hair, you’ll have to experiment to see what gives you the result you love most.

Okay, so how do you plop curly hair?

  1. Wash and condition hair. The first step to proper plopping is the standard shampoo and conditioning session. Choose your favorite formulas and try leaving in a small amount of the conditioner, just enough for a smooth, slippery feel to the hair, Emilio suggests. This will add moisture and help act as a primer to your styling products.
  2. Carefully start to dry your curls after showering. When you step out of the shower, your hair will feel extremely wet, but don’t start wringing the water out yet, she says. Instead, flip your head upside down and gently shake your head from side to side without touching your curls. This will get rid of excess water without manipulating the curl pattern. “Hair should be damp, not soaking wet, before plopping,” explains Cristina Bosque, a hairstylist at Rita Hazan Salon in New York City.
  3. Grab your styling products. Dispense a blob of your favorite gel, curl cream and/or leave-in conditioner into your hands and glide them over the curls, dispersing evenly. “Next, scrunch the ends up to your roots, squeezing out all that extra water at the same time,” Emilio advises. The gentle scrunching will help tighten your curl pattern, Bosque adds. At this point, you should start to see your spirals becoming really defined.
  4. Plop hair with a microfiber towel or T-shirt. Place a short sleeve T-shirt or microfiber towel on your bed or countertop and gently rest your hair on top of it. “Then, pull the shirt or towel over the nape of your neck, criss cross it towards the front of your head and flip it up gently,” Emilio says, and violà! You’ve plopped your hair.
  5. Leave hair plopped between 15 and 45 minutes, Emilio says. And yes, “some people even sleep with their hair plopped overnight,” she adds. It may require some trial and error to find out what works best for you, and it also depends on your curl type. You’ll want to choose the timeframe that gives you bouncy, strong curls, not flat, smashed ones. Those with “very curly, frizzy textures may not want to plop their hair for as long so that there is less shrinkage,” Bosque adds.

Pro tip: For best results, make sure to keep the plop loose enough that your curls aren’t crushed, but tight enough that it doesn’t fall off your head, Emilio notes.

Can I plop wavy hair?

Wavy hair can be plopped just like curly hair. Follow the same steps as above to embrace your natural wave.

Can I plop 3C or 4C hair?

You can definitely try it and see if it works for your tighter curls, but Bosque doesn’t advise it. “I would instead diffuse on low heat for maximum results,” she explains. No matter how you decide to dry your hair, she recommends using a microfiber towel to help manage frizz.

Can I plop straight hair?

In general, plopping only applies to curly hair, but the process “is good for people who need a little added curl or more texture,” explains Bosque, which means that people with straight hair that want more texture can certainly try plopping.

Emilio says plopping your hair is similar in method to using a towel turban after getting out of the shower. A T-shirt or microfiber towel is recommended for plopping rather than a terrycloth or cotton towel because traditional towels are too thick and rough on fragile curls. “They create too much friction which leads to frizz,” Emilio says.

How often should I plop my hair?

The point of plopping is to speed up the drying process of the hair and to keep the curl shape as defined and frizz-free as possible. So, hair pros agree it’s totally fine to plop every time you wash and style your hair.

The Hilarious Reason Dolly Parton Always Sleeps With Her Makeup On

Dolly Parton has a special way of doing just about everything in life. And apparently, her skin care habits are no different.

In a new interview with The New York Times, the 73-year-old icon admitted that she always sleeps in her makeup. “I clean my face in the morning,” she said.

Never mind that practically every dermatologist on the planet advises against this. Parton, in Dolly Parton fashion, is completely unapologetic about it. Her reasoning? She wants to look good in case of an emergency.

“You never know if you’re going to wreck the [tour] bus, you never know if you’re going to be somewhere in a hotel and there’s going to be a fire,” she said. “So I leave my makeup on at night and clean my face in the morning.”

In all fairness, this is Dolly Parton we’re talking about, and she’s known for doing whatever the heck she wants. Also, her skin looks pretty good, so apparently she’s one of the few people who can actually get away with this bad habit.

Ok, but really, why is it so bad to sleep with makeup on?

Unfortunately, it’s not something the average person should try, says Gary Goldenberg, MD, assistant clinical professor of dermatology at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai Hospital. “Sleeping in your makeup is one of the worst things you can do for your skin,” he says. “Makeup occludes pores and can cause acne. Bacteria, dirt, and environmental pollutants can get trapped under makeup and do serious damage to your skin, including skin infection.”

Sleeping in your makeup can also make your skin age faster since it can increase oxidative stress by not allowing your skin to renew itself, Dr. Goldenberg says.

If you wear makeup, it’s crucial to remove it daily—and to do it right, says Joshua Zeichner, MD, a New York City-based board-certified dermatologist and director of cosmetic and clinical research in dermatology at Mount Sinai Medical Center. “If you are wearing a full face of makeup, you may need a makeup remover in addition to your traditional cleanser,” he says. Then, after your makeup is removed, consider using a serum with retinol and a good moisturizer to give your skin an overall boost, Dr. Goldenberg says.

And, since everyone has had those nights where you just can’t pull yourself out of bed to wash your face, Dr. Zeichner recommends keeping makeup-removing towelettes in your nightstand for emergencies.

Despite the fact that Dolly’s habit is ill-advised, it’s pretty unlikely that Parton is going to stop sleeping in her makeup any time soon. After all, she’s Dolly Parton, and she makes no excuses for that. You do you, Dolly!

Rixo launched its new collection today, and we

Rixo’s new collection launches are always much-anticipated events. Over the last eight years, the brand’s founders, Henrietta Rix and Orlagh McCloskey, have honed their design craft and become purveyors of perfect dresses (opens in new tab). Unsurprisingly, the brand has gained hoards of Rixo-loving fans in the process.

Today marks a new era for the brand, as Rixo will be moving away from its previous model of bi-weekly drops, to instead start launching collections monthly. For January, the label has aptly named its range ‘New Beginnings,’ and here at Marie Claire, we were offered a sneak peek.

Filled with daisy prints (a symbol of new beginnings), Rixo’s January collection epitomises everything we have come to love about the brand—vibrant patterns (opens in new tab) and signature silhouettes included. Our editorial team were lucky enough to try the collection ahead of today’s launch, and (spoiler alert!) we were certainly impressed.

Over the last few seasons, Rixo has made strides to ensure its collections are more inclusive than ever. The brand launched an even more diverse selection of extended sizes (opens in new tab) last September and now caters to a range between size 6 and size 24. “People come back to Rixo because they remember how good they felt wearing it,” co-founder Henrietta Rix told Marie Claire at the time.

The feeling of a Rixo dress is certainly one that stays with you, as our editors learned this week. Keep scrolling to see our editors try on Rixo’s new collection and read our honest, unfiltered thoughts below.

Zara shopping hacks you never knew about from former employees

Zara’s sale (opens in new tab) is on right now and whether you’re planning on treating yourself to some new loungewear (opens in new tab), a pair of ankle boots (opens in new tab) or the perfect winter coat (opens in new tab), if there’s one thing savvy shoppers need it’s a Zara cheat sheet.

From their returns policy to the best day to shop, and the secret to bagging a bargain, here’s a complete guide to all the Zara shopping hacks you need to know, to help you save a bit of time and money. Thanks us later.

Zara’s returns policy

While it’s easy to return Zara items, the high street chain has made a major change to its policy, in that it will now charge you for it. If you choose the drop-off option where you bring the items to a third party rather than return to a store, you’ll now be charged £1.95, which will be deducted from your refund sum. You’ll still get 30 days to return your unwanted items.

Website navigation tip

Another week, another viral Zara TikTok hack (opens in new tab), and this time it’s one that will make your shopping experience online way less stressful. If you go to the top right of the site in any section, you’ll see a ‘View’ toggle. Slide it to the right, and the products will appear in an orderly fashion, skipping the moving images and pretty shoots that aren’t that useful to your browsing.

This way, you’ll be able to see and shop all the products on the page, much more easily.

Zara sizing hack

This TikTok Zara size hack (opens in new tab) went viral in summer, explaining that each label has a symbol on it which indicates whether it’s true to size or not.

These symbols can be found on both the purchase tag (at the top) and the inner label. It’s believed a circle symbol means the item runs large, while a square means that it’s true to size, and a triangle indicates that it runs small. This way, you can skip the queues as you’ll already know whether to get your normal size, or go one up or down.

The best days to shop at Zara

According to Zara employees, the best days to shop online are usually Monday and Thursday. This is because they are the main days for new product drops. While the majority of products are listed on a Monday or Thursday, there are odd new pieces that get listed on the site most other days too.

The best time to shop at Zara

In terms of going into a store, it’s pretty obvious that the morning is the best time of day to go. Fresh stock will be put out and everything will be ordered nicely, plus there won’t be many people around, meaning you can beat the queues both at the changing rooms and at checkout. As soon as 1pm hits though, the queues will snake around the shop as people on their lunch breaks try to buy something.

How to find the best discounts in the sale

Apparently, Zara employees are told to put the most expensive sale items at the front of the store, in the hope that these will go first. So, if you want to grab a real bargain, head to the back of the store or rack. This is often where you’ll find the dregs of the sale even after it’s officially ended.

How to get faster shipping at Zara

This doesn’t necessarily work every time, but I’ve noticed that if I get an item shipped to a store, it’s usually available much quicker for pickup (usually the next day) than it would if I chose normal delivery. Plus, this way you get free delivery, and it’s more environmentally friendly as it’ll likely be delivered with other stock or orders.

It’s probably dependent on stock at your local store as well, so be mindful that you’ve got a better chance of this happening if you live close to a bigger Zara store.

Does Zara still do special prices?

Although it’s not advertised as a sale, the Zara Special Prices section is essentially a sale. You’ll find it in the dropdown section under ‘women.’ It’s labelled pink, so you can’t miss it.

In there, you’ll find clothing from every category, from dresses to coats and shoes, some of them reduced by as much as 60% off. Although it used to be Zara’s more basic pieces, now it seems to even include current collections.

Zara sold out items

Missed out on an item? There are Zara shopping hacks for that. I’ve noticed that a lot of the best-sellers often get restocked, even a year later if they’ve been extra popular.

If an item is on the verge of being re-stocked, it’ll have a ‘coming soon’ message with an envelope next to the sold out size. Click on it to add your email address, then you’ll be alerted by email as soon as it gets re-stocked.

Zara has also started adding new products before they launch, as a kind of ‘sneak peek’ so this is a good way to ensure you don’t miss out on new launches.

Be aware that you won’t be the only person signed up for these alerts, so be quick to log on to the site as soon as you get the email.

You can also check the availability of the item in store, but I’ve found that the tool isn’t always accurate, as it can take a few hours for the store’s stocks to align with the online ones.

Zara discount codes

Sadly, Zara famously doesn’t do discount codes, nor do they offer student discounts, so if you’re after a bargain, you’ll have to wait for the sales.

Zara sales 2022 UK

On top of the two big annual end of season sales, there are a few smaller ones peppered throughout the year.

Zara hardly ever reveals when its sale will happen, so the best way to know in advance is to sign up to the newsletter (opens in new tab), because you will usually get notified in advance.

My top tip: create an account if you haven’t already and bookmark any items you’ve got your eye on. This way you can easily see which items have been reduced and add them to your shopping basket quickly.

If you want extra discounts, it’s worth being patient. Historically, although Zara sales start with an ‘up to 50% off message’, not all items are reduced by that much. If you can wait a week or two, more lines will be added to the sale and discounts will increase.

Zara free delivery

The cheapest way to get your Zara order delivered is to get it sent directly to a store of your choice, for free. However, if you’re spending over £50, then your shipping will be free regardless.

If you’d like guaranteed next-day delivery, Zara charges £4.95. Or if you’d like same-day delivery within London, the brand charges £7.95. Be mindful though, that you are only eligible for same-day delivery if you’re within London and your order is placed before 2 PM.

Zara beauty hack

If you’re looking to stock up on some makeup, you have to check out the Zara Beauty section (opens in new tab). It features stunning eyeshadow, lipstick, nail polish and accessories in cruelty-free formulas, beautiful refillable packaging and over 130 dreamy colours. With prices starting at just £5.99, the Zara beauty (opens in new tab) section is well worth it.

Zara home hack

This tip doesn’t actually involve the main site, but instead Zara home (opens in new tab). Did you know that as well as homeware, Zara Home sells some amazing loungewear too? It’s not all cheap but there are some great pieces like trousers and tunics for under £30..

As the temperatures start to shift, even people in typically warm climates like to add some layers. Enter: the versatile vest. If you’ve watched a #GRWM (Get Ready With Me) video on your TikTok FYP recently, you’ve likely seen this viral puffer vest more than once.

The puffer vest is a wardrobe staple that adds texture to a look. Not only are vests meant to provide some extra warmth, but they also can add some color to your wardrobe or give a solid long-sleeve shirt a whole new look.

This popular vest has a zipper front and a high-standing collar and is a hit because it comes in such a variety of colors (one TikTok video even features an influencer with the entire rainbow of them). Best of all, it comes in at a low price point.

The Fendi x Tiffany & Co. collaboration launches today – here

“It’s not a bag, it’s a Baguette.” Those were the famous words spoken by Sarah Jessica Parker in a season three episode of Sex And The City, when her character Carrie Bradshaw (opens in new tab) was in the midst of being mugged. It was this phrase that helped to skyrocket the Fendi baguette to fame, solidifying the item as an in-demand, must-have accessory (opens in new tab) and one of the best designer handbags (opens in new tab) of all time.

Now over twenty years later, the bag (or should I say, baguette) is still as popular as ever.

Last September, Fendi celebrated 25 years of its iconic design with a dedicated runway show in New York. For the event, Fendi called upon modelling superstars like Linda Evangelista and had the industry A-list seated front row, Kate Moss and Kim Kardashian included.

While the runway itself was much-talked-about and publicised highly on social media, the event was so all-encompassing that it was easy to miss the finer details. Like the announcement and debut of a Fendi x Tiffany & Co. collaboration, for example.

Yes, Fendi and Tiffany have worked together to create a unique interpretation of the famous baguette bag and the coveted item is finally set to be released today!

Of course, it will come as no surprise to learn that Tiffany’s Fendi Baguette will be available in the jeweller’s signature blue shade. The collaboration includes three different interations of the baguette, including a medium size handbag, a nano bag and an even smaller bag charm.

Debuted on the runway by none other than Bella Hadid, the collaboration also includes a reimagining of Fendi’s iconic hardware. While every baguette comes adorned with a Fendi FF Zucca clasp, Tiffany has added its signature Tiffany T into the mix, combining both brands’ logos in one. It’s a true match made in fashion heaven.

The collection is set to debut today, but will only be available to purchase for 24 hours, while quantities remain available. To purchase a piece from the collection, you’ll need to join the waiting room on Tiffany’s website (opens in new tab), which is set to open at 8:30am EST (1:30 PM in the UK).

While it might be somewhat of a feat to get your hands on a Tiffany & Co x Fendi baguette, the iconic handbag (without the Tiffany blue hue) is readily available online. Keep scrolling to shop other Fendi baguettes below, including vintage and preloved iterations.

Here’s Why Dolly Parton Is Never Seen Without Her Iconic Fingerless Gloves

  • Dolly Parton is always wearing fingerless gloves and long-sleeved outfits.
  • The country singer may be covering up scars and tattoos.
  • Dolly’s creative director, Steve Summers, said she wears them to hide certain features like her hands and elbows.

When you watch Dolly Parton perform in all of her glory, you’ll notice the country star’s voluminous blonde hair, sparkly sequin gowns, bright pink lipstick, and five-inch stilettos. But what often goes unnoticed is the “Jolene” singer’s fingerless gloves.

Sometimes Dolly’s gloves are sheer, and other times they’re bedazzled, catching your eye when she waves at the crowd or juggles one of her many awards. But no matter what her gloves look like, the Queen of Country always has a pair on.

With the premiere of A&E’s Biography: Dolly on Easter Sunday, fans all over the world are once again wondering why Dolly is never without her signature fingerless gloves. While she hasn’t publicly commented on the mysterious accessory, there are a few theories as to why she has a thing for them.

1. She may wear gloves to cover up scars and tattoos.

Ever notice that Dolly Parton is also always wearing long sleeves? In an interview with Vanity Fair, Dolly commented on rumors that she wears them to cover up her tattoos, emphasizing that she doesn’t like that people make such a big deal about them.

“Most of the tattoos, when I first started, I was covering up some scars that I had, ‘cause I have a tendency to have keloid scar tissue, and I have a tendency where, if I have any kind of scars anywhere, then they kind of have a purple tinge that I can never get rid of,” she said. “So mine are all pastels, what few that I have, and they’re meant to cover some scars. I’m not trying to make some big, bold statement.”

Dolly also told Good Morning America that she wanted to get rid of the purple look from the scars. “I thought, ‘Well, I’m going to kind of decorate these with some flowers or little butterflies or whatever.’”

Dolly’s longtime logo, the butterfly, represents her Dollywood theme park and she even wrote a song about them. “I wrote a song called ‘Love Is Like a Butterfly,’ and it became a big hit in my early years.”

2. Fans say she may have had corrective hand surgery.

Duane Gordon, owner of the Dollymania fan page, said that Dolly has joked about wearing gloves when asked in a couple of interviews, saying that she’s just cold or thought they were cute. Although Dolly has never officially verified the true reason for her gloves, Duane said the country singer began wearing them after corrective hand surgery.

“I can relay third-hand information that she was asked about the gloves by fans while filming scenes for her upcoming movie Joyful Noise and told them that last year she had had corrective hand surgery (medical, not cosmetic) and it left a scar that she’s covering,” he wrote. “Again, I’ve not heard that directly from Dolly or her management, but I’m told that’s the answer she gave privately in Atlanta to those who asked.”

3. She may wear them to hide certain features.

Everyone has one “thing” they don’t necessarily love about their body, and for Dolly, apparently it’s her elbows and hands. According to Dolly’s creative director Steve Summers, the singer wears gloves as a matter of style. “She doesn’t like her elbows,” Steve told InStyle. “[They ask] ‘what’s wrong with her hands?’ She’s 73, and she doesn’t like them!”

No matter what her reason is for wearing fingerless gloves, they’ve never outshined her bright smile, bubbly personality, and legendary music. If anything, they’ve just become a small part of her iconic persona.

Trust me, this is set to become the It-bag of 2023

Here at Marie Claire, we know a thing or two about the best designer handbags (opens in new tab). From newer styles (opens in new tab) to tried-and-tested classics, we consider ourselves to have a fairly vast repertoire of knowledge when it comes to carryalls.

And while it may only be the 4th day of 2023, I am confident that I have already found the It-bag that is set to be big news this year.

Enter, Jacquemus’ Le Bisou bag.

Launched on the runway at Jacqeumus’ recent December show, the Le Bisou bag is a classic shoulder bag with a unique, rectangular shape. The bag is modern yet also refined, with a slight nod to the popular minimalist shapes of the ’90s and early 2000s. Overall, it has all the makings of a handbag set to reach cult status.

While the item only debuted on the 12th of December, it is already available to purchase at a few select retailers. Jacquemus (opens in new tab) has released the bag in several iterations. There is the Le Bisou Cadenas, which is made from leather and adorned with a padlock. The Le Bisou Perle, which features a statement bead design. And the Le Bisou mousqueton, which has replaced its regular leather handle with a curved gold metal strap.

In terms of shades, Jacquemus has that covered too. The bag is available in just about every colour of the rainbow, ranging from pink and purple to blue, yellow, orange and brown. Plus, the item has already been carried by the likes of Emma Chamberlain, Christine Quinn and Amina Muaddi. How’s that for an endorsement?
