The ultimate winter wardrobe classic.
If you’re going to invest in one thing and one thing only for the upcoming seasons (or ever for that matter), make it a good camel coat. While it might seem a little early, trust me when I say now’s the time to buy one, especially as there are some incredible bargains around.
Don’t be fooled into thinking camel coats are boring, because the style options are endless. You will never go wrong with the double-breasted coat or the midi-length and buttonless belted version, however, this season it’s all about the more daring designs.
I am loving the ankle-grazing oversized look as seen on the catwalk at Max Mara and Fendi, but I’m also embracing all things casual. Whether that’s the long puffer jacket seen at Moncler or Brunello Cucinelli or the shearling-lined shell jacket at Stella McCartney. Tactile textures are another key look. Bottega Veneta’s fringe shearling coat is high on my wishlist, as is Max Mara’s teddy coat.
If you’re on a budget, try the likes of COS, Arket and Boden. If you’d like something more trend-led, check out Mango, Zara and ASOS.
“I have been wearing camel coats on and off since forever, there’s something about this biscuity tone that just makes you feel warm and crumbly. I divide my love for the puffer jacket, wool coat and faux fur equally every single year and have no problem at all investing in the right coat in all three shapes if they steal my heart.”
“This year I’ll be looking for a super long wool coat – probably double-breasted or slightly fitted. I’ll be teaming it with extremely long straight or slightly flared-leg jeans and a pointed shoe or boot with some exaggerated collars or a fitted roll-neck jumper. Classic and very cute!”
“The idea of a short ‘90s cropped puffer – worn with oversized cargo pants and fabulous trainers are great for stylish sporty days.”

Totême Signature Dropped-shoulder Wool and Cashmere-blend Coat, £790 | Net-A-Porter
Stockholm-based label Totême knows how to take a cooler approach on the classic camel coat; just look to the aptly named Signature coat for proof. Imbued with Scandinavian minimalism, it’s a trend-transcending piece spun from a cosy blend of wool and cashmere shaped to a slouchy dropped-shoulder silhouette.
Editor Verdict:
“I’m always on the lookout for coats that work with my outfits, rather than against them and the Toteme Signature passes the test every single time. It’s slouchy enough to look effortlessly cool, but luxe enough to make you feel like something special. Despite the fact I bought mine worn and second-hand, it didn’t show even a glimpse of bobbling—and that’s something I wish I could say for some of my more recent spenny coat buys.” – Shannon Lawlor, Acting Senior Beauty Editor

At-home manicures can save you a lot of money, but even the best-quality nail polish inevitably chips within days of application. That’s why nail care brands have started to sell at-home gel nail kits in recent years, which promise long-lasting, salon-quality hard gel polish manicures for a fraction of the price. But now there’s a new-ish, at-home manicure method that many DIY manicurists are saying is even better than gel: dip powder nail kits.
What is a dip powder manicure?
Also known as SNS nails, dip powder nails are known for being long-lasting and don’t use UV light to harden, unlike gel nails. The color comes from dipping your nails into a finely-milled, pigmented powder before bonding with adhesive, rather than painting on streaks of hard liquid gel. The result is a long-lasting, evenly coated manicure, usually only achieved by professionals — until now.
Our top picks:
Ready to try a DIY dip powder manicure? We’ve rounded up the best dip powder nail kits you can buy for an at-home salon-quality manicure, based on GH Beauty Lab and editor favorites, as well as best-sellers with lots of glowing reviews online:
You should always closely follow the instructions that come with the specific kit you buy, but in general this is the step-by-step process for applying dip powder to your nails:
Prep the nail by pushing cuticles back, then filing into your desired nail shape.
Use a nail primer to remove oil and dirt from the nail bed.
Apply the base coat once nails are clean and dry.
Dip into powder color and use a duster brush to remove excess.
Brush on another coat of base and dip again. Double-dunking ensures full coverage and a stronger finish for a chip-resistant manicure.
Finally, paint nails with an activator, which bonds the color powder into a lacquered gloss.
Apply a glossy top coat for extra strength.
Which is better: dip powder nails or gel nails?
While both dip powder and gel manicures boast longevity (think two to three weeks for DIY efforts, but potentially up to a month), dip powder manicures don’t require UV light-curing lamps. That means you can cut your mani time in half, won’t have a bulky nail lamp taking up space in your home and it’s a bonus if you’re sensitive to UV exposure. Plus, they can be easier to remove than certain gels; you just need a light filing and a soak in acetone (no drills!).
Are dip powder kits bad for your nails?
If you are worried about your nail health, don’t fret: Dip powder itself won’t ruin your nails, but scraping and picking the manicure off will. Chipping away at your dip powder nails with a nail stick removes layers of your natural bed, weakening your nails.
Instead, to remove dip powder nails, stick to the same removal process as gel: Dip a cotton pad in acetone and allow it to sit on your nails for 10 to 15 minutes before wiping the color away. If your manicure doesn’t budge after 15 minutes, let your nails soak in polish remover a bit longer. Don’t forget to rub a good cuticle cream into your nail bed when you’re all done to keep your nails healthy and strong.

Over 25 years on, the revenge dress remains one of Princess Diana’s most iconic styles of all time. You’ve all seen the pictures of Diana stepping out of her car in that off-the-shoulder dress, but do you know the actual story behind it?
Let’s take a walk down sartorial memory lane. The date was 20th November 1994, and Diana, Princess of Wales, was attending the Vanity Fair party at the Serpentine Gallery in London.
It was a particularly significant date because it was the same very evening that King Charles made his notorious adultery admission in a tell-all television interview.
Public opinion of him was rather low, with most siding with “the people’s Princess” in the separation. The interview was meant to paint King Charles in a more sympathetic light, however, things backfired a little when the interviewer asked him if he had been faithful.
The King replied, “Yes. Until it became irretrievably broken down, us both having tried,” a less than subtle confession to his adultery with Camilla, which was rumoured to have gone on for years.
So that same evening, while many were glued to their television screens, Princess Diana stepped out in the mother of all dresses.
The black cocktail dress was actually commissioned from Christina Stambolian three years prior, but the Princess thought it too daring at the time. And it’s true that it wasn’t your typical royal dress, as it showed off cleavage, shoulders and *shock horror* legs as well.
In fact, Diana had apparently planned to wear a different dress altogether to the event. According to The Telegraph, she had prepped a Valentino number, but details were leaked to the press so she changed her mind.
It’s hard to know whether the Princess knew the effect the dress would have, but her former stylist Anna Harvey did say she wanted to “look like a million dollars.”
That she did, with the dress making triumphant headlines the next day, thus earning the “Princess Diana revenge dress” title.
But whilst this is undoubtedly one of her most famous dresses, you could argue her whole wardrobe post-divorce was a revenge wardrobe.
Gone were the stuffy gowns and demure dresses. Since she didn’t have to follow a strict dress code anymore, Diana came into her own, embracing the shorter hems and sleek tailoring that defined the 90s. She particularly loved Valentino dresses, like this white one she wore to attend a charity gala in Italy.
Still elegant, but more mature in her sartorial choices, as you can see from these looks.
You may not think to use them often, but patches can provide a quick way to upgrade clothing items like a jacket, jeans or hat. Plus, they can be a fun way to add flair to something more utilitarian, like a child’s backpack or a work uniform. And what’s great is, you don’t need to be well versed in sewing to get the job done thanks to iron-on patches, which are easy to work with.
When purchasing, patches are labeled as either sew-on or iron on, explains fashion designer Maddie Iverson of O’Field Apparel. But if you’ve misplaced the packaging, the most obvious way to tell which method is needed to install a patch is to look at the back of it. “If there is an adhesive, sticky, tacky or filmy layer on the back, then the patch is likely an iron on patch. If a patch back is clear of any additional layers, and it has a felt or fabric back, or you can see the embroidery clearly, then the patch needs to be sewed,” says Iverson.
If you’re working with the former, below, we’re breaking down an easy way to iron-on patches.
More From Good Housekeeping
But first, what kind of material do iron-on patches adhere to?
You can iron patches onto a wide range of fabrics, including polyester, denim and more, but natural materials like cotton provide the best blank canvas. Keep in mind: Some materials, like leather or heat-sensitive synthetics, are prone to scorching and heat damage, so it’s best to choose sew-on patches for any items with this type of more delicate construction.
How to iron on patches:
Ready to get started? Here’s a quick step-by-step:
Prep. First make sure that the backing of the patch is clear of any debris such as hairs, fuzz, lint or dirt. Next, you need to know what kind of fabric you are ironing the patch onto.
Choose the right temperature. If you’re putting a patch on apparel — jeans or a shirt, for example — follow the iron setting mentioned on the care tag. If there is no care tag, it’s better to be safe than sorry, so use a lower heat, but keep the iron on the patch long enough for the adhesive back to melt and fuse with the fabric. We also recommend covering the patch with a piece of fabric or parchment paper before ironing so you don’t burn it.
Iron on. Depending on the size of the patch, try to use just the tip of the iron while adding on the patch. Start from the middle of the patch to act as an anchor and move out from there. Keep in mind that the adhesive backing on an iron-on patch needs to fully melt to then bond onto the fabric.
Let it rest. Once you are sure that the adhesive has bonded, take the iron off of the patch, and let your fabric and patch rest and cool down a bit. After about 5 to 10 minutes, you can lift the fabric vertically and see if there are any spots where the patch hasn’t fully fused. If necessary, repeat the process until the patch is fully bonded.

What’s the best iron temperature to use to iron-on patches?
In general, delicate fibers, like polyester, use lower heat and heavier duty and more durable fibers like wool, cotton and linen can withstand a higher heat, says Iverson. Denim jeans and jackets, as well as most backpacks, can also tolerate higher heat. Most irons have fiber settings that are safe to follow when selecting the best temperature to iron on a patch.
No matter what level of heat you’re using, never use the steam setting to iron on patches—the water prevents proper bonding. Always use a dry iron to adhere patches.
Why isn’t my iron-on patch sticking?
If your iron-on patch isn’t working, your iron probably isn’t hot enough, says Iverson. “Be sure to give your iron a few minutes to fully warm up to your selected setting before using it.” And if you’re attaching the patch onto a delicate fabric, slowly ramp up the iron’s heat and make sure to only use the tip of the iron and let it sit on the patch long enough for the heat to reach the adhesive, so it melts and bonds. Proceed carefully on delicate fabrics to keep from melting or damaging them.
Pro-tip: If you notice the adhesive doesn’t hold up over time and your patch starts to peel around the edges, you can reattach by using fabric glue or hand sewing just the portion that is peeling.
Can you iron on patches with a hair straightener?
“As long as the heat is hot enough to melt the adhesive onto another garment or fabric, any kind of iron will work,” says Iverson. However, there are a few things you need to keep in mind if you’re going to use a straightener notes Lexie Sachs, executive director of the Textiles, Paper & Apparel Lab in the Good Housekeeping Institute:
It may be difficult to maneuver/reach certain parts of the garment.
A used hair iron has lots of oils and product on it. So if your iron is not clean, it could soil both the patch and/or your garment.
You have to be careful to heat just the patch, not the fabric itself.

Back in January, she stepped out in another navy coat, this time from the British brand Hobbs, for a day with Place2Be, a charity that supports children and families’ mental health.

While it’s impossible to know for sure, the tailored fit and classic navy hue might have inspired Meghan to follow suit. Of course, you don’t need a royal budget to take some inspiration from these fashion icons.
This navy trench from Nordstrom is current on sale for $180:

This isn’t the first time the royal ladies have both worn blue. They showed up at the first annual Royal Foundation Forum last week in the same hue, but each stayed true to their equally beautiful — and distinct — styles.
Katy Perry made an excellent bid for the most naked dress of Oscar night at the Entertainment Studios Oscar Gala sponsored by Heineken. Perry wore Versace to the event, which served as a viewing party and later, concert. Donatella Versace herself praised Perry’s look on her Instagram. “You look fantastic Katy,” she wrote.

The dress appeared be beaded, with some darker, accentuating detail along the bodice. Perry flaunted the gown’s every angle for photographers, along with her very platinum pixie:

She sang for an hour at the event but changed into a pink jumpsuit. Naked dresses like that, understandably, aren’t the best for intense choreography.

Of course, Perry didn’t have the only naked dress of the night. There were several at the Vanity Fair Oscar after party, but few were quite as bare as hers.
There’s no one quite like Mum, and she deserves the perfect gift. As you know, with our build your own boxes, we’re all about all things bespoke. My Mum has, on numerous occasions, told me she doesn’t want anything in the way of presents on Mother’s Day, but if I didn’t bother, you’d bet correctly that I would have a sulky Mum on my hands. Whatever type of woman your Mum is, she’s deserving of a nice treat and a handmade option is sure to put a smile on her face. If your crafting skills leave nothing to be desired but you still want to give your Mum a more personal gift that’s thought out and put together by you, a DIY Mother’s Day Hamper may be just the thing.
Hampers are designed to be created entirely with your own Mum in mind, but I’ve shared my own to provide some inspiration. Whether she’s a fashion lover, beauty enthusiast or foodie, it’s the perfect way to combine the things she’ll love…
THE GIFT OF BEAUTY
If she’s into beauty, you’re on to a winner with our indulgent Mother & Daughter Box. If she’s not usually that fussed over her lotions and potions, introduce her to our curated edit of 14 beautiful products, perfect for a girly pamper session. Worth over £100, with brands including Philosophy, Paula’s Choice and The Body Shop, this is a lovely way to spoil someone special this Mother’s Day.
A SWEET NOTE
Treat your Mum to a bottle of her signature scent, or introduce her to a new fragrance this Mother’s Day. Sweet and vibrant, the Accessorize Lovelily fragrance envelops the skin with notes of raspberry, orange, jasmine and sweet vanilla.
SAY IT WITH JEWELLERY
Nothing says I love you quite like a personalised piece of jewellery. It wouldn’t be Mother’s Day if you didn’t do something a little sentimental (OK, maybe I do like to be mushy sometimes). This gorgeous sterling silver layered necklace from Hurley Burley features a disc charm that can be personalised with an initial and a long bar for a word, message or saying. This bespoke gift comes packaged in a beautiful gift box which can be gift wrapped with a personal message free of charge. The best thing? The delivery is super-fast, so ideal for any last-minute panic.
BLOOMING LOVELY
Flowers are the magical touch to any hamper, but how about including a beautiful potted plant? If there’s one difference between my Mum and I, it’s the fact she can actually keep plants alive. Waitrose have a great selection of Mother’s Day plants and flowers so the options are limitless.
TASTY TREAT
If your Mum has a sweet tooth, may I recommend the ever so fancy Charbonnel et Walker? Boasting both style and substance, the Sea Salt Chocolate Selection is one of my favourites for a special occasion. You might want to add a ‘must share with doting Daughter’ tag on this one, ladies!
