Chances are whether you grew up in the 80’s, 90’s or 00’s, you’ll have a clutch bag hiding in the back of your wardrobe. Once the staple arm candy of weddings, event dressing and nights out, the clutch bag fell out of favour in recent years as the mini bag, top handle and classic crossbody all clamoured for the top spot as our occasion wear accessory of choice.
Proof that you can never keep a fashion staple down for long however, the clutch bag is officially back, and gaining momentum as the cool girls’ bag of choice. Hailey Beiber, Kendall Jenner and model Brooks Nader were all recently spotted carrying clutch bags, cementing the understated accessories return.
Heading to dinner together alongside Gigi Hadid, both Hailey and Kendall opted for slouchy styles in the form of Bottega Veneta’s orange pouch for Hailey and The Row’s Bourse clutch for Kendall. Characterized by their pillowy shape and soft leather fabrications, both bags give off an effortless vibe that feels elevated from our clutch bags of old and channels the more relaxed mood the catwalks are currently taking.
One great thing about opting for a softer, slouchy style is their ease when it comes to holding them. One of the many reasons clutch bags gained a bad rep was down to their awkwardness as, let’s be real, nobody wants to struggle trying to balance a clutch bag and drink as they had to the dancefloor. Thankfully, softer style clutches make it that little bit easier, as they can be easily scrunched under your arm without affecting your overall look.
And, that’s not to say the structured clutch bag doesn’t have a place in 2023 either. Earlier this week influencer and Stormzy’s stylist, Melissa Holdbrook-Akposoe took to her Instagram to also call for the return of the clutch. And, as Mel’s famed for the hashtag #MMMDI standing for Mel made me do it, it’s safe to say where she leads others are sure to follow. Her pearly white box clutch from Mango may not be online anymore, but there are plenty of similar styles available both from designer brands and on the high street if you want to get in on the case clutch action.
So, whether you’re sadly not lucky enough to have a vintage clutch hiding at the back of your wardrobe, or you just want to treat yourself to something new, scroll on for our edit of the best styles available now.

If you’re looking for an easy way to look chic now the season’s changing, you need to add a knit dress to your wardrobe ASAP. Versatile, stylish and above all else in this current changeable weather, cosy, it’s sure to quickly become one of the hardest working items in your capsule wardrobe.
Spotted on the catwalk at Bottega Veneta, Chanel and Fendi as well as all over the high street, knit dresses are a style staple. Whether you opt for a cosy cashmere style, a figure hugging ribbed dress or tap into the sheer trend in an ultra-thin weave, a great knit dress will strike the perfect balance between easy effortless wearing while still looking elevated.
For added interest, follow the queen of quiet luxury Sofia Richie Grainge and pair a sleek dress silhouette with understated accessories. The addition of a barely-there belt to her asymmetric knit dress, both from Khaite, defines her shape without overpowering the most important piece: the knit dress.
While oversized styles always look chic, the ribbed knit dress reigns supreme for evening occasions. Lana Condor’s bold orange dress by Off White proves why, as it moulds to her shape for a figure-hugging fit. Look for styles that incorporate ribbing into the design, like Lana’s corset style for an expensive feel. Off White is great at this but you can also find more subtle versions from brands like Cult Gaia, Jacquemus and even H&M on the high street.
If ribbed styles aren’t for you, cut-out knit dresses or sheer thinner knits are also a great option for more dressed up occasions. Christopher Esber is currently leading the way with stylish cutouts, and his knitted maxi style is no different. Pair with metallic accessories to complete the look.
As we know, right now the weather isn’t always playing ball, but that doesn’t mean you have to ditch your knit dress if the sun does decide to shine. We’d argue sleeveless styles are even more versatile than traditional long sleeve iterations: you can simply add a blazer or boxy jacket if the chill does set in. Lili Reinhart’s nude style is by female-founded Trois The Brand but we’d suggest heading to Skims for something simple yet stylish at an affordable price point.
Scroll down for our edit of the best knit dresses available right now. In fact, they’re so good, that if you want to treat yourself to more than one, we won’t blame you.

Utter the words ‘Alexander McQueen’ to any fashion enthusiast and their eyes are sure to light up. The luxury house and late designer have become symbols of ingenuity and innovation, responsible for some of the most memorable fashion moments over the last few decades.
McQueen himself has been described as one of fashion’s greatest showmen, having pioneered the popularity of the fashion show spectacle. Look to any list of iconic runways throughout history and Alexander McQueen’s Spring 1999 catwalk will undoubtedly be on it. Shalom Harlow’s staring role being spray painted atop a rotating platform is still regularly referenced today by editors and designers, alike.
The house’s Spring/Summer 2010 collection complete with reptilian-inspired designs and those incredibly unique arched ‘Armadillo’ shoes is another one for the history books and can be credited as the moment that helped this particular editor fall in love with the fantasy of fashion.
Of course, when it comes to iconic designs, there is no shortage of standouts to choose from, and while it might not be practical to wear some couture creations on a daily basis, you can take the brand’s wearable art with you in the form of its accessories.
First launched in 2018, Alexander McQueen’s rectangular jewelled satchel bag has been reinvented a few times since its inception, with bold cross-body straps, different hardware additions and varied fabrications, appearing in several different combinations.
Though, throughout all of this reimaging, the one element that has remained constant is the item’s distinctive four-ring feature. Also seen on the Jewelled Hobo bag below, this hardware has become a hallmark of McQueen’s accessories.
As the brand describes, the knuckle feature was first introduced by McQueen himself and was inspired by London street culture, created to “juxtapose urban toughness with the beauty and refinement of jewellery.” Each duster has four rings, which are topped with contrasting symbols, including two skulls placed alongside a crystal and a flower-covered design.
Over the years, these symbols have all become synonymous with Alexander McQueen’s collection, though none more prominently than the skull motif.
As an element in McQueen’s creations, the skull symbol can be traced back as early as 1992, when the designer used the feature in his Central Saint Martins graduate collection entitled, ‘Jack the Ripper Stalks His Victims.’ The skull motif has since become a part of the brand’s house codes, used across everything from scarves to jewellery and handbags.
The Jewelled Hobo Bag
Featuring details that have been plucked straight from the house codes, The Jewelled Hobo bag would be instantly-recognisable to any fan of the brand. Utilising the label’s knuckleduster hardware and skull motif, the accessory is quintessential McQueen.
Originally debuted as a part of the house’s Pre-Spring 2023 collection, the Jewelled Hobo is one of the brand’s newer bags, though it has already solidified itself as a favourite in its short history. Recently, the bag has been toted by the likes of Naomi Campbell, Taylor Russel and Michelle Yeoh, while It-girl Sadie Sink also appears holding the bag in the brand’s Spring/Summer 2023 campaign.
According to McQueen, the bag’s facetted triangular silhouette was inspired by the large stone that sits within the knuckleduster design, reflecting the flat surfaces that sit on the diamond shape. Meanwhile, the four-ring hardware has been borrowed from McQueen’s previous designs, emulating the aesthetic of the Jewelled Biker Satchel above.
With a little research, it becomes clear McQueen’s accessories are more than just bags. They’re portable pieces of artwork that can be taken with you, holding all the symbolism and spirit evoked by the label since its creation in 1992. Not for the faint of heart, McQueen’s Jewelled Hobo and Biker Satchell bag should be carried by those intent on making a statement.

A classic luxury designer watch, once unobtainable for most, is now closer to reach thanks to a host of watch brands spending their time on the more affordable end of the market. Household names, including Cartier, Rolex and Breitling are shifting the focus to clean design and quality materials, creating a host of options under £5k.
But with a plethora of new models released yearly, where is the best place to start with finding one for yourself? It all comes down to your own personal taste, says Lauren Virk, buyer at the UK’s largest luxury watch retailer, Watches of Switzerland. “When considering which timepiece to choose under £5k, it’s imperative you do your research and that you stay true to your own style and needs,” Virk tells Marie Claire UK.
“There is a lot of information out there that can guide you in multiple directions and it can be overwhelming, so the main questions I would consider are: do you want a quartz or mechanical timepiece? Do you want a bracelet or a strap? Do you want an everyday timepiece, something a bit sportier, or something to simply make a statement? Something that suits your lifestyle can answer a lot of these questions, so take your time, answer these honestly, and you will choose wisely.”
“Look out for the details,” she adds. With most luxury watches at this price point, quality comes as standard, thanks to the considered craftsmanship and individual movements (the technical beating heart of the watch) so the best way to know what you like is to get hands-on.
“Timepieces can appear very different on the wrist—especially if you are unsure what size to go for, and remember that a luxury timepiece should spark an emotional connection—listen to your first initial reaction,” she adds.
“It’s a competitive price bracket and therefore the client is almost spoilt for choice. We have seen a resurgence in women’s pieces and a demand in the industry. The craftsmanship of luxury timepieces is something to marvel over, and each brand has its own aesthetic cues, quirks and iconic codes, and although you may not be a horology expert, a timepiece can offer a function you may find yourself never knowing how you lived without.”
Hermès
Hermès Cape Cod 31mm small stainless steel and leather watch
No-one does understated elegance quite like Hermès, and there is no better example than the Cape Cod watch. Distinctive for its double strap, stitched to the same high standards as its handbags, this piece has consistently imbued watchmaking with a dose of Parisian chic since its first appearance in 1991.
Longines
Longines Hydroconquest 32mm Ladies Watch Mother Of Pearl
Longines draws on its watchmaking expertise, stretching back almost 20 years, for this piece exclusive to the Watches of Switzerland group. Epitomising classic codes in a juxtaposition of stainless steel and yellow gold, subtle diamond dots in place of hour markers prove you don’t have to rule out the dazzle at this price point.
Rolex
Rolex Oyster Perpetual 28
Classic Rolex design details unite in the elegant Rolex Oyster Perpetual. The watch, crafted in Rolex’s signature Oystersteel—a particularly resistant unique steel alloy developed by the brand—comes with the classic flat three-pink link bracelet, while a delicate sunray pink dial is feminine without being girlish.
Tag Heuer
Tag Heuer Carrera Date 36mm Ladies Watch Green
Green is a dominating watch trend right now, and this sunray brushed pastel on the Tag Heuer Carrera Date is one of the nicest takes we’ve come across. It’s a colourful foil for the comfortable, ergonomic design, which nods to the sporty heritage of the model originally launched to measure speeds in a car race.
Breitling
Breitling Navitimer Automatic 35 Stainless Steel
Breitling is doing wonderful things with its women’s watches output at the moment, incorporating vintage accents and cool offbeat touches to otherwise classic designs. We particularly love the copper dial on the aircraft-inspired Navitimer model, offset by a beaded bezel in stainless steel.
Cartier
Cartier Tank Française 25.7mm small stainless steel watch
You’ll never regret investing in a Cartier Tank, which has been loved since its first appearance in 1917 when its square silhouette made a refreshing antidote to the more typical round-faced watch dials. This Française model, in stainless steel, offers a sporty and wearable in.

What do Selena Gomez, Kaia Gerber and Taylor Swift all have in common? Aside from exceptional bone structure and millions of Instagram followers, they all can’t stop wearing summer dresses by Californian-founded slow-fashion brand, DÔEN.
Known for their pretty floral designs that take inspiration from vintage styles, DÔEN may be the best-kept secret of all our favourite celebs when it comes to effortless summer dressing—that is until we spotted it and had to let you in on it.
Just this week Selena Gomez took to her Instagram stories, posing in a floaty blue dress by the brand. Paired with a Dutch braid and ballet flats, she was tapping into the cottage-core trend in the best way possible.
And, this isn’t the first time Selena’s opted for a DÔEN dress. Earlier this year, while filming in her kitchen, she looked every bit the countryside dream in their white puff-sleeve Ischia dress. The style, which is made from super soft organic cotton, is still online now so you can follow her lead and waft around in your own soft-girl summer fantasy.
It seems Selena’s not the only one with a plethora of DÔEN dresses hiding in her wardrobe as Kaia Gerber, Taylor Swift and Kylie Jenner have all been spotted rocking dresses by the brand too. From Taylor’s off-the-shoulder style in her US Independence Day photo dump to Kylie’s floral dress-clad selfie taken on her private jet, we’re taking this as proof that these dresses really are what the celebs are actually wearing on their down days.
Want to get your hands on a DÔEN dress of your own? Scroll on for our edit of the best dresses to shop right now, including a few styles the celebrities actually wear.

It’s official: mini bags are out! Or at least they are according to Jennifer Lawrence and Angelina Jolie, who were spotted out and about with much larger arm candy this week.
Over recent years we’ve fallen out of love with the humble tote bag, reserving it for lugging our laptop to the office or sporadic trips to the beach, but we’re pleased to say it’s had a resurgence as of late. No longer do you need to choose between fitting your phone, cardholder or lipgloss into a teeny-tiny bag (if you ever managed to fit all three, I salute you) as the return of the tote means we can once again go back to carrying everything but the kitchen sink for those just in case moments.
This season, however, any old tote bag just won’t do, as elevated styles are reigning supreme. Think leather fabrications, upgraded detailing like quilting and woven designs and understated logos.
Jennifer Lawrence’s tote bag of choice from Loewe is the perfect example of the new tote wave. Made of soft yet durable leather, the geometric puzzle design is understated yet iconic. Plus, it cleverly folds flat with an origami inspired design for easy storage when you’re not using it, offering the perfect combination of practicality and style.
But, the new tote bag wave doesn’t mean logo designs are totally off the table. Celine’s Triomphe print tote, as chosen by Angelina, and Saint Laurent’s quilted style still tap into the elevated mood without hiding their designer credentials. To pull off this look, make your bag the focal point of your outfit so it still feels sophisticated and opt for muted tones rather than anything too bright or garish.

Talk about a throwback.
It’s been almost impossible to miss, from Instagram feeds to IRL (be it on trains, at the pub or just generally throughout the streets of London) cargo trousers are back in a big way. Between Hailey Bieber, Bella Hadid, and Paloma Elsesser, It-girls by the dozen are investing in the Y2K-inspired utility trend, and going all in on its low-rise waist and oversize silhouette.
Fast forward a year and cargo trousers are not going anywhere, in fact, they have made their way into cargo skirts, cargo jeans and parachute pants. Celebs and fellow It-girls are balancing out the look by pairing the voluminous trousers, alongside cropped tops or shrunken tees, in yet another styling trick inspired by the early aughts.
Of course, the trend’s resurgence is not purely anecdotal. Searches for women’s cargo trousers in the UK have risen 83% over the last 12 months, while the hashtag #cargopants has over three billion views on TikTok. (For context, this was at 560 million views this time last year).
As far as labels leading the way, Jaded London seems to be the brand of choice amongst celebrity cargo trouser connoisseurs. Kaia Gerber, Kylie Jenner and Hailey Bieber have all been spotted in items from the label. While Local European is another brand on the A-list radar. But it’s Bershka’s cargo trousers for women that go viral on TikTok and sell out in the same week.
Want to get in on the trend? Keep scrolling to shop the best cargo trousers for women below.
Vintage grey parachute cargo pants
These are the cargo trousers favoured by Kylie Jenner, Kaia Gerber and more. In fact, Jenner was seen in this exact pair earlier this week.
Hailey Bieber and Kendall Jenner have both been seen in trousers by this brand. The parachute shape offers a very oversize silhouette.
Tailored Utility Trousers
If you’re after a more tailored iteration of the trend, these black cargo trousers from River Island will be your best bet. Don’t forget to use our River Island discount code at checkout.
Straight leg cargo trousers
This is the pair that has gone viral on TikTok. Seriously, every time there is a new post of a creator in Bershka cargos they sell out the same week. (Always check ASOS).
Cargo trousers for women coming back is great, until you need a work outfit. M&S show us how to do tailored cargo trousers in the right way.
When we think of cargo pants, khaki hues come to mind. Nobobdy’s Child have this classic pair of cargo pants in black and cream too for an every day take on the trend.

When two fashion powerhouses combine on a collection, we set our style senses on high alert for launch, and that’s exactly what we’ve been doing ever since the Gap X LoveShackFancy collaboration dropped in the US earlier this month. If, like us, you’ve been patiently counting the days (read: endlessly refreshing the Gap website) until the release date you can breathe a sigh of relief, as it’s officially launched—and it’s just as dreamy as we hoped.
Effortlessly combining the two brands’ identities, the 55-piece collection features the classic cuts that Gap is known for but with a fun LoveShackFancy twist. Think ruffled denim, ditsy floral dresses and 80’s inspired corsages on wardrobe staples like trench coats and boxy shirts.
On the collection, Rebecca Hessel Cohen Founder and Creative Director of LoveShackFancy said, “Re-imagining iconic Gap classics for all generations through our LoveShackFancy lens has been a dream. Each piece is the perfect mix of nostalgia and freshness that you’ll live in forever and won’t find anywhere else.”
As if that wasn’t enough, the collection is fronted by R&B royalty Ciara and her children Future and Sienna, which makes us need it in our wardrobes even more.
Wondering which pieces to invest in? We predict the corsage detail trench coat and the denim bustier will sell out in no time so move quickly. Or, if you’re still on the lookout for the perfect Summer wedding guest outfit, try the puff sleeve midi dress paired with cream platforms for a cottagecore feel.

It’s no secret that French women are the epitome of chic. But exactly how French ladies make their style appear so effortless is the secret we’ve long been searching for. Now, thanks to Hailey Bieber, we’re one step closer.
Fortunately for us, the secret to stepping into your most stylish self is low-maintenance, painless, and doesn’t require trying to appear as though everything comes naturally to you while walking in six-inch heels. In fact, it’s all in a shoe.
“Moccasins or loafers are a must-have staple in any French women’s wardrobe”, says Chrysoline de Gastines, CEO of Parisian brand Balzac Paris.
Surprised to hear the secret to dressing like a Parisian is all in a pair of loafers? It’s been a long time coming. While French women have been pairing most of their looks with loafers and moccasins for years, flat shoes have quickly become the trend of the year—thanks to our newfound obsession with quiet luxury.
You can’t have missed Sofia Richie’s wedding in the South of France earlier this year, where quiet luxury was surely the theme. Since then, TikTok dubbed it “old money style” which instantly made the flat loafer a must-have item.
As with everything Sofia Richie wears—much like this iconic Missoni zig zag outfit—loafers are totally timeless. And, it’s highly likely that you already have a pair hiding in the back of your wardrobe. They tie together every outfit: whether it’s jeans and a Loewe vest, a summer dress or a tailored look for those office days. My winner for French style is a wide-leg linen trouser and loafer combination.
Loafers are definitely having their moment and they’ve quickly become Hailey Beiber’s go-to shoe. She’s pretty much worn them all summer and has proven that loafers look as good as they do with jeans and a white tee, as they do with shorts and socks.
And Bieber’s not the only one blazing a trail for the loafer as the shoe of the season. Selena Gomez took to her instagram stories recently in a pair of chunky loafers from Charles & Keith, while Dua Lipa, Dakota Johnson and Bella Hadid have also jumped on the trend. If that’s not proof that loafers can pull together any and every look, we’re not sure what is.
Now is the time to invest in a trusted pair that will see you through the end of summer, right into Autumn (when it’s cold, pair them with a sheer pair of socks). They are well worth the investment as you will reach for them year after year. Just as French fashion never goes out of style, neither have loafers and now it makes sense – it’s a French women’s style secret.
Keep scrolling for the best loafers, as chosen by a shopping writer. I’ve looked at over 100 pairs, from the best French fashion brands to high street stores, and these are my favourites.
The best loafers to shop for French Quiet Luxury
Bobbies Paris Jill Moccasins
Bobbies Paris has so many perfect pairs of loafers it was difficult to choose just one. These are my favourite because of the timeless gold detailing, and they are made from 100% leather, and crafted by hand in Portugal. They have options in black and cream latte too.
Prada Logo Leather Loafers
While the secret to French girl chic is all in a flat, no-heel loafer, we can’t help but love a chunky style. We love them with the slightly sheer sock for a preppy vibe.
Russell & Bromley Backless Loafermule
The backless design makes these perfect for summer and keeping cool on warmer days. This style is also available in brown and metallic if you want to tap into two trends in one shoe.
These are one of the best high street loafers. The flat slip-on pair are made with M&S’s Insolia Flex® which makes walking in flats more comfortable for your feet. Plus, they have antibacterial padding which is perfect for hot sweaty days. The subtle gold detailing adds a classic touch.
Saint Laurent YSL Logo Loafer
When you’re treating yourself to a pair of designer shoes it pays to make them a real investment. These YSL logo loafers are exactly that. In polished burgundy leather, they’re the perfect loafer and you will still want to year them next year, and the one after.
Reformation Agathea Chunky Loafer
Here at Marie Claire UK, we love Reformation for their sustainability efforts but right now we love them even more for having so many great loafer options. This pair, in black and white, are timeless and will last in your wardrobes for years to come.
These classic loafers belong in every French woman’s wardrobe. Made with chrome-free leather, and a low heel, we love the classic strap and topstitching for a real quiet luxury feel.
Gucci Horsebit Leather Loafers
When I hear loafers, I immediately think of Gucci. Gucci first released these iconic loafers back in 1953, (way ahead of the trend) and they have never gone out of style and remain a true classic 70 years later. That’s what you call an investment shoe.
Charles & Keith Gabine Leather Loafers
If they’re good enough for Selena, they’re good enough for us. Charles & Keith’s Gabine loafers feature a sleek silver buckle for an understated look, while the square toe gives a menswear inspired feel. Perfection!
