Can Castor Oil Help Grow Hair? Experts Set the Record Straight

You often hear about the benefits of beauty oils for your hair, nails and skin. And for good reason: they can help with hydration, strengthening, healing and more. One of the most popular is castor oil (a.k.a. ricinus communis seed oil), which is derived from the castor bean plant native to India and East Africa, and and has been used for thousands of years for a variety of purposes, ranging from health to skincare to haircare. It’s an oil that can work wonders for hair, albeit maybe not in the way many people think.

“[Castor oil] is widely used in haircare for its supposed benefits as a hair growth stimulant and moisturizer,” says Snehal Amin, M.D., a board-certified dermatologist in New York. While there is a lot of speculation that it can help with hair thickening and growth, the jury is still out — currently, more scientific data is needed to prove any of these benefits. Here, the lowdown from experts on what castor oil can — and can’t — do for your hair.

What are the main benefits of castor oil for hair?

While castor oil may not help you to suddenly sprout fuller, longer hair, it does have some strand superpowers. The ingredient can:

  • Smooth strands. “When added to leave-in conditioners or pre-shampoo hair treatments, castor oil can help to smooth the outer protective hair cuticle and add shine,” says Anabel Kingsley, brand president and consultant trichologist at Philip Kingsley.
  • Nourish hair. “Castor oil is an emollient, so it can help hair feel less dry,” says Good Housekeeping Institute Beauty Lab Reviews Analyst Chiara Butler.
  • Promote scalp health. “Its antibacterial properties help to reduce fungal and harmful bacteria on the scalp,” Dr. Amin explains.
  • Prevent split ends and breakage. “By coating the hair shaft, it can protect the hair from breaking and future hair damage,” he adds.
  • Helps purify hair and scalp. Castor oil also “absorbs dirt, which is an unexpected benefit,” Dr. Amin notes.

Does castor oil help hair growth or thickness?

Both Dr. Amin and Kingsley agree that there are no quality scientific studies clearly showing a benefit of castor oil for hair growth. “The thinking is that castor oil increases blood flow to the scalp and reduces inflammation, both of which are beneficial for hair growth,” Dr. Amin explains. “That being said, many of these hypotheses have not been proven by any rigorous research.” Kingsley adds that “the benefits of castor oil relate to the impact it can have on the condition, feel and appearance of hair that has already grown. It will not help stimulate new hair growth from the scalp.”

There is one study that was performed in silico — meaning simulated in a computer program — which showed that ricinoleic acid, a component of castor oil, may act similarly to prostaglandin analogues, which are known drugs for counteracting hair loss. “It’s very important to note that this study was speculative; the ricinoleic acid was not actually tested on humans or animals,” Butler explains. She adds that the most effective treatments for hair loss are FDA-approved drugs like Minoxidil and people who are struggling with hair loss should see a dermatologist for treatment.

What’s the best way to use castor oil for hair and can it be applied daily?

“Castor oil is on the thicker side and can make the scalp greasy,” Dr. Amin says. It should be thought of as a weekly treatment and is not meant for daily use. He suggests applying a small amount of castor oil to dry hair once per week, leaving it on for 30 minutes or longer, then washing it out with a clarifying shampoo. You can also mix it with other hair oils, such as coconut oil or almond oil, to balance the texture. “Pure castor oil is very viscous, so it can cause hair to feel oily and weighed down if too much is applied,” Butler adds.

Kingsley suggests using a pre-shampoo conditioning treatment containing castor oil (she recommends Philip Kingsley’s Elasticizer, which contains a blend of castor and olive oil). This type of treatment can improve hair’s elasticity, boost shine and help to reduce frizz. Depending on your hair type and the product’s directions, you can leave it on for anywhere from 20 minutes to overnight.

Does castor oil cause side effects like hair loss or damage?

While castor oil can cause side effects, it’s usually related to the scalp and should not cause hair to fall out. “Some people may have a skin sensitivity to castor oil, and this can cause problems when it’s rubbed into the scalp,” Kingsley says. Steer clear if you have a flaky, oily scalp condition, like seborrhoeic dermatitis, as “applying castor oil to your scalp and leaving it on can make the problem worse,” she explains.

Note that there have been reports of of allergic reactions to castor oil on skin, Butler says. Because of this, and the chance of contracting allergic dermatitis, Dr. Amin advises to apply only a small amount on a hidden area of skin (a DIY patch test) before using castor oil all over your head.

What hair types is castor oil best for?

Castor oil is ideal for any hair type that is dry or frizzy, Kingsley says. If you have fine hair, avoid leave-in castor oil formulas, as they can be heavy on strands, she advises: “Instead, look for lightweight creams or oil-rich pre-shampoo treatments, as they won’t weigh even the finest hair down.”

Dr. Amin suggests using castor oil if you have brittle, damaged hair or a dry scalp. “If you suffer from dandruff, steer clear of castor oil, since fungus may be causing scalp flakiness in this case,” he adds.

Kate Middleton

Wimbledon is one of our favourite times of the year, not just because of the Pimm’s or strawberries and cream, but because of all the polished looks. Celebrities, royals and the players go all out for the occasion; but it’s always Kate Middleton’s Wimbledon outfit that we eagerly await.

The Princess never disappoints, and this year was no different. Kate Middleton’s Wimbledon outfit sells out almost immediately, and last year we regretted not adding her high street hat to basket for the rest of the summer. For Kate Middleton’s first Wimbledon appearance today, the Princess went all white, with one unmissable touch: a mint green Balmain blazer. Giving us serious 80’s power dressing vibes that we need for our next office wardrobe update; we knew Catherine’s Wimbledon appearance would give us all the inspiration we need this summer.

Princess Kate actually got in trouble for breaking Wimbledon rules last week, but was a ray of sunshine in the rain today in SW19. As patron of the All England Lawn Tennis Club, the Princess attends the tournament each year, and is usually seen in the royal box. Today’s Balmain blazer looks so similar to her late mother-in-law’s 80’s look that we had to do a double take, and now we are even more in love.

(Image credit: Getty Images / Neil Mockford / Contributor)

Today, Kate Middleton’s opted for the typical Wimbledon all-white look with a powerful addition. The mint green Balmain blazer really stole the show. Showing us how to do power dressing right, we can’t decide if we love the pleated midi skirt or the blazer more.

The perfect 80’s look, the oversized lapels and bold buttons throw us back to the good times and remind us of Princess Diana’s Trooping The Colour look back in June of 1988.

How cute is this photo? We can’t get over how similar the two are and adore Prince Harry’s matching green and white look. It’s not the first time Kate Middleton has taken inspiration from her late mother in law, she has previously been seen wearing jewellery passed down to her and Princess Diana was reportedly Kate Middleton’s childhood style icon.

We love how the Princess totally skipped the 90’s fashion trend and went straight to the 80’s and now we want to, too. Shop Kate Middleton’s Wimbledon outfit below and all our favourite Kate Middleton inspired green blazers. While you’re here, don’t miss our guide on what to wear to Wimbledon this summer.

The Princess’ Balmain blazer is sold out online, but her Mulberry bag and heels are still in stock, so be quick.

Sarah Jessica Parker found this Carrie outfit in a thrift shop, according to the AJLT costume designers

And Just Like That, Season 2 returned to our screens over the last few weeks, and despite the fact we’ve only seen the first three episodes, the new season is already proving to be just as fashionable as the last.

From Valentino couture gowns to Hermès Birkin bags, the series is certainly not lacking in over-the-drop luxury designer looks. But would you believe one of the season’s key outfits was actually found in a thrift store?

Yes, according to the show’s costume designers Molly Rogers and Danny Santaigo, the bright blue snowsuit Carrie Bradshaw wears in the new season was actually a find Sarah Jessica Parker tracked down herself in a charity shop.

Princess Diana

Throughout her life, Princess Diana wore many outfits that will go down in history. From her quintessential ’80s puff sleeve wedding dress to her off-the-shoulder LBD ‘revenge’ dress, the royal was nothing short of a fashion icon.

Though, when recalling her more casual looks, Princess Diana’s sheep jumper immediately springs to mind, being one of the few off-duty outfits that has gained as much recognition as her formal attire. And now, the iconic jumper could be yours…

Yes, Sotheby’s has just announced that is it set to auction off Princess Diana’s exact Warm and Wonderful sheep sweater, as a part of its inaugural Fashion Icons sale, later this year. The company has stated that bidding will commence on August 31 and conclude on the 14th of September.

So how did Sotheby’s manage to get their hands on this little peice of fashion history, you might ask? Well, it’s kind of a funny story.

According to the designers behind Warm and Wonderful, Sally Muir and Joanna Osborne, Princess Diana had actually sent her original jumper back to the brand in order to get it repaired. However, instead of repairing the item, the brand just sent her an entirely new jumper in its place.

As per Sotheby’s Instagram, the pair continued, “This past March, as we were rummaging through the attic searching for an old pattern, we spotted a small box. Inside, tucked away beside a cotton bedspread was Diana’s original red sheep sweater from 1981.”

A serendipitous moment, indeed.

If you want to get your hands on Warm & Wonderful’s iconic sheep sweater, but don’t have the patience to wait until August (or the funds to buy the exact one owned by Princess Diana) the brand still sells replicas of the style spotted on the royal all those years ago.

In fact, now Warm & Wonderful utilise that recognisable sheep motif across a number of different items including jumpers, socks, hats, bags and more.

6 designers on the swimwear trends that are set to rule this summer

With balmy temperatures here to stay and summer officially upon us as of this week, you might find yourself thinking about your warm-weather wardrobe. And whether you have day trips planned or a longer holiday on the agenda, it’s true that no summer packing list is complete without swimwear.

From bikinis to one-pieces, finding a swimsuit that makes you feel like the best version of yourself can often be a key to a great holiday. That is why, this week, we’ve turned to the experts to understand exactly which swimwear trends to buy into this season.

We spoke to the talented designers behind Tringl, Fruity Booty, Renia Olga, Tona The Label, Boteh and Masarà, to get an insight into looks they predict will take over for Spring/Summer 2023, and of course, they did not disappoint. From bright shades to vintage-inspired prints and textured fabrics, this summer is all about having a little fun with your swimwear, while ensuring your feel comfortable and supported in the process.

If you’re after something a little more timeless, two of our designers called out chocolate brown as a key shade for the season, while several spoke to the enduring nature of buying into classic silhouettes that will stand the test of time.

Of course, if you’re looking for styles that can go beyond the beach, many of the designers below outlined pieces which can easily be paired alongside wide-leg trousers or skirts, for a post-swim aperitif.

Without further ado, keep scrolling as six designers offer their take on the biggest swimwear trends for 2023.

Triangl

“‘Less is more is the Summer 2023 motto,” Jaynee Wehbe, the Creative Director of TRIANGL tells Marie Claire UK. “For this season, we have gone with less fabric, expect to see cheekier bottoms as well as tops that show off under boob (the ‘ESTE’).  We also continue to hero textured fabrics (like terry towelling, lurex, velvet and ribs), ensuring you can transition your swim into styled outfits.”

When it comes to prints, Wehbe explains, that 2023 is all about stripes. “Our number one print for the season is the stripe, you’ll see this across different fabrications and bold colours as well as shorts, skirts, dresses and shirts.”

Fruity Booty

Minna Bunting and Hattie Tennant, the founders of Fruity Booty, say this season is all about “modern interpretations on classics.” The brand creates its products from repurposed and sustainable fabric, and for 2023 has utilised traditional materials found in vintage swim pieces. The brand has reimaged cotton seersucker fabrics and textured materials, using them to create modern shapes.

Aside from this, Bunting and Tennant say, tropical colourways also inspired by “vintage prints from the ’60s – ’70s era” are in, as well as “comfort silhouettes.” The brand is also “focusing on higher rise briefs that elongate legs and wired bras that provide support.”

Tona The Label

Tona The Label is a sustainable swimwear brand made with all women in mind. The brand specialises in creating supportive swim with sizes that range from a D to a G cup.

In terms of Summer 2023 trends, the label’s founder Tona Stell, says “Brown has been gaining more and more popularity as the new neutral so I think we’ll see that as a big swimwear trend this summer.” She continued, adding that she also predicts vibrant shades will be on the agenda. “Bright colours are always popular in swimwear but I think we will see lots of clashing colours and pop prints on the beach.”

When it comes to silhouettes, Stell explained, “I think people are moving away from itsy-bitsy triangle bikinis and looking for something with more substance.” She continued, “I think a sculptural design with curved silhouettes will be a big win.”

Renia Olga

“The cut-out trend is the hottest at the moment, and we fully embraced this in our latest collaboration with Valentina Ferragni Studio,” said swim designer behind Renia Olga, Guia Cleps. “Having the support of a swimsuit but adding playful cut-out detailing makes it a really transitional item for your suitcase, taking you seamlessly from beach to bar.”

Aside from this, Cleps says you’ll be shining on the beach this summer. “The first drop of our Lurex Collection sold out in just 72 hours – there was a crazy demand from our customers shopping for glitter and statement beachwear this year. We have also just launched the ‘Oldie’ bikini set to fully embrace the metallic trend, giving you a retro golden glow.”

And finally, if you’re looking for a one-piece but still want to show a little skin, monokinis are trending, according to Cleps. “The monokini is one of our key search terms. It’s a swimsuit, but in the usual Reina Olga style, always elevated! Our Augusta Scrunch defines this well and following demand we’ve continued to make this in a variety of block and two-tone colours.”

Masarà

At Masarà, founder Francesca Fabris says her products are made to transcend trends. “I would say that when designing Masarà, I give more attention to timelessness rather than trends, as we’re an eco-centric brand,” she explains.

“We want customers to enjoy and keep their pieces for as long as possible; however, by coincidence, we are proposing styles that coincide with some very influential SS23 trends this year.”

“The first is Barbiecore. It’s great as there has been a wide variety of pinks on offer; we, however, have gone with a more “grown-up” version of the colour with our Cherry Blossom Pink styles this summer.”

She continued, highlighting that the neutral tones within the collection make them easier to style.  “I’ve also seen nuances of beige and earthy tones! We have the Cappuccino and, this season introduced the Chocolate shade. With these colours, I personally believe that the pieces are much easier to accessorise with.”

“And last but not least, the bandeau strapless trend. This classic style is versatile and very day-to-night appropriate with wide long pants and skirts.”

Boteh

“Print and palette wise it’s all about pastels for this summer, yet with a bright undertone; marigold with lilacs, Aegean blues and ’60s pink. Think shades that are reminiscent of colourful coastal towns across the Med,” Amelia Mather, founder of Boteh tells Marie Claire UK

“For silhouettes, I can’t go past the classic triangle this season, tortoise trimmings and high-waisted bottoms are also eternally chic,” she continues.

“Bodice styling and soft structure is something I’m loving in swimwear, for both one piece or bralettes,” Mather adds. “A more structured bodice can be worn with wide-leg pants or a wrap skirt for a dressier look.”

The Princess of Wales just made a case for statement earrings, and hers are surprisingly affordable

The Prince and Princess of Wales were out today to attend the fourth day of Royal Ascot 2023 at Ascot Racecourse.

Alongside other royal family remembers—including Princess Beatrice of York and Sophie, Duchess of Edinburgh—Princess Kate took to the course dressed in her absolute best. For the sunny afternoon, The Princess opted for a bright red v-neck gown with puff sleeve detailing and matched her look alongside a wide-brim red fascinator.

The royal’s hat was created by milliner to the stars, Philip Treacy, while her dress was a bespoke number courtesy of Alexander Queen. Princess Beatrice donned a floral Monique Lhuillier look, while Duchess Sophie opted for a pink dress by Suzannah London.

However, while Princess Kate’s brightly-hued outfit was nothing short of show-stopping, it was her earrings that truly captured our attention.

The Princess was spotted in a pair of gold statement earrings, which featured intricate detailing. While it would be easy to assume the Princess’s earrings were sourced from a luxury designer brand (or were even a family heirloom), Kate’s signature accessory today can actually be attributed to contemporary French fashion brand Sézane.

The label is known as a favourite among chic French women and is beloved for its timeless appeal and affordable wardrobe staples. In fact, every pair of earrings on the brand’s website retails for less than £100.

While Kate’s exact earrings are unfortunately sold out, there are several similar pairs available on the brand’s website right now that won’t break the bank. Oversize gold hoops start at around £70, while statement resin earrings can be added to your cart for just £55.

Last week, during Trooping The Colour, The Princess of Wales opted to wear a pair of sapphire and diamond drop earrings, which once belonged to the late Princess Diana. And while we loved the sweet sentiment of that moment, it’s also refreshing to see the Princess opt for items that are a little more affordable.

Searches for linen skirts are on the rise, and I

There has been a lot of talk about linen recently, and given the sweltering heatwave that hit the UK over the last week, we’re hardly surprised.

As a fabric, linen is the perfect item to turn to during the warmer months, particularly given the fact that it is extremely breathable and doesn’t tend to retain heat. Already this month we have brought you the best linen shirts, linen dresses and linen trousers, and today we’re turning our attention to another wardrobe staple: linen skirts.

Unsurprisingly, the popularity of linen skirts is rising by the minute. According to Google search data, searches for the item have risen by 33% year on year, with specific searches for white linen maxi skirts rising by 120% in the last 12 months.

And the data doesn’t stop at just searches. UK high-street retailer Whistles has noticed linen sales rising year on year, too. According the the brand “sales on linen are up +34% on the year,” with a rep from Whistles explaining that linen skirts in particular are up 140% year on year.

From mini styles to maxi lengths, this summer there are so many options around if you’re looking to add a linen skirt to your regular rotation. I find a midi iteration of the item just perfect for days at the office, while a mini skirt is ideal for weekend wear.

Maxi looks—like the one seen one seen on Kendall last summer—are also trending at the moment. After the fashion industry’s obsession with all things micro mini last summer, we’re set to see the opposite extreme take over this season. Maxi length are on the rise and will look exceptionally chic paired alongside plain tank tops in block colour shades.

From beach to bar (and even office), it’s true that the versatility of linen skirts is truly endless. Keep scrolling to shop my favourite linen skirts this season.

Gwyneth Paltrow

Gwyneth Paltrow has been style icon for decades. The star shot to fame in the late nineties, winning an Oscar for her role in Shakespeare in Love, at the age of just 26.

In her time, Paltrow has attended countless awards shows, premieres and ceremonies and is widely regarded as quite the fashion industry veteran. So of course, it makes sense that she would have an extensive wardrobe archive to match.

From her iconic pink Ralph Lauren Oscars dress to the green co-ord she wore in Great Expectations, Paltrow has had no shortage of memorable outfits, yet one of her most talked about looks undoubtedly has to be the outfit she wore to the 2002 Oscars.

For the event, Paltrow donned a long black gown by Alexander McQueen which featured a shirred transparent bodice and full skirt. At the time, Paltrow styled the look alongside dark eyeliner and a quintessentially noughties side braid hairstyle.

With fashion’s current obsession with all things Y2K, it would hardly come as a surprise to learn that this look is still as trendy as ever and evidently, Paltrow’s daughter is also a fan of her mother’s vintage gown.

Taking to Instagram lately, Paltrow shared an image of her 19-year-old daughter, Apple Martin, trying on the gown, proving that she is a true spitting image of her mother.

The pair look almost identical in the look, which Paltrow revealed garnered quite a few negative comments at the time. Speaking to Vogue, Paltrow explained, “People were really critical. I think at the time it was too goth… I think it sort of shocked people, but I like it.”

Apple Martin is not the only celebrity child to be taking inspiration from her mother’s archive. In fact, earlier this year we spotted Salma Hayek’s daughter in one of her mother’s iconic gowns, too.

At the 2023 Oscars, Hayek’s daughter Valentina sported her mum’s strapless red Isaac Mizrahi dress from 1997, looking every bit as glamorous as her mother did at the time.
