I

As a fashion editor, there are a few outfit formulas I come to rely upon for busy weekday mornings. Having trusted go-to looks (or work uniforms as they’re often referred to) can take the hassle out of getting dressed, seamlessly helping to streamline your morning routine.

During the warm summer months, there is one look I find myself constantly returning to for office days, and that is midi skirts and tank tops. The look is polished, yet effortless and requires very little additional styling (aside from a few accessories).

Evidently, I’m not alone, as this week in particular, I have noticed so many other women donning the same outfit formula on my morning commute. In fact, on one train carriage alone this week, I spotted four different people in the midi skirt and tank top look, I too was wearing.

The beauty of this look is the fact it can be mixed and matched endlessly. Particularly, if you have a fairly healthy rotation of tank tops and various midi skirts.

For me personally, I love opting for a printed midi skirt in a fun pattern and pairing it alongside a plain top in a block colour. However, you can also invert the look and pair a printed top alongside a plain skirt.

When it comes to midi skirts, as a petite woman there are a few brands I seriously rely on. Whistles recently released its first petite range and I have been living in the brand’s linen midi (you can shop it below). For women on the shorter side, Reformation also has a chic selection of bias-cut petite midi skirts in various prints and shades.

In the tank top department, the high street is filled with worthy selections. I personally like my tops with a little bit of elastane in them, so they stretch and mould to the body perfectly. Shades of black and white will always be staple colours, yet this season I’m also gravitating towards pastel hues like baby blue and soft yellow.

Without further do, keep scrolling to shop midi skirts and tank tops (aka my go-to summer office outfit formula).

5 fashion designers on the summer dress trends set to take over in 2023

Given we’re in the midst of our first heatwave of the year, it’s safe to say that summer weather is finally here. With the new season on the horizon now is the time to take stock of your wardrobe and start thinking about the items you’ll need for your summer capsule.

Of course, summer dresses are always a good place to start. Dresses are a key element of almost every summer wardrobe, acting as the perfectly polished, all-in-one outfit that can be styled in a snap. So, exactly what kind of dresses are trending for summer 2023? To understand the answer to this question, I called upon the experts.

Speaking to the creative minds and fashion designers behind some of my favourite brands—including Faithfull The Brand, FarmRio, Rixo, Rhode and Alémais—I got an insight into what we should expect to see everywhere this season. And lucky for you, I don’t plan to gatekeep.

From the return of minimal ’90s-inspired styles to a focus on artisanal and artful detailing, the summer dress trends of 2023 are as varied and versatile as they come. Maxi lengths are set to be omnipresent, while strapless silhouettes are also due for a resurgence.

Without further ado, keep scrolling for the biggest summer dress trends of 2023, according to five fashion designers.

Faithfull The Brand

“What we are excited about this summer is slip-style hemlines and bias cuts,” explained Faithfull The Brand’s co-directors Sarah-Jane Abrahams and Helle Them-Enger. “They are both elegant and modern cuts; perfect for the cool girl who wants effortless sophistication.”

The pair continued, explaining we’re set to see slip dresses in a range of versatile, lightweight fabrications. “We also anticipate the maxi dress to return as a key summer staple. Its no-fuss, timeless cut allows for ease of transition from beach-to-bar.”

“And finally,” the pair ended, “this summer will see a resurgence of the ’90s styles we all know and love. We welcome interesting detailing in high cuts, halter necklines and open backs. Taking influence from past eras and drawing inspiration from retro styling and icons, we expect dresses to emulate the ultimate sunseeker aesthetic.”

Rhode

Phoebe Vickers and Purna Khatua, the founders of Rhode, also believe the ’90s are set to be a huge point of inspiration this summer. “Our customers are loving ’90s mini dresses this season,” Vickers and Khatua tell Marie Claire. “Simple, flattering and fun and perfect for dressing up or down depending on your style, plus they look great with a trainer or a heel.”

“Mermaid-core is a runway trend that’s going to be big this summer and we’ve put our own Rhode take on this through our prints as well as upcoming sequin and embellished applique pieces,” the pair explained. “And the strapless dress is also going to be popular this season – it’s something that we are seeing a lot of pick up on. Some favourites from our very own Spring/Summer 2023 collection include the The Giovanna Dress & The Lisa Dress.”

Alemais

Emerging Australian designer Alémais has its own distinct artistic aesthetic and for 2023, the brand predicts the rise of versatile pieces with a unique point of view.

“A shirt dress is a classic favourite of mine,” explained Alémais co-founder and creative director, Lesleigh Jermanus. “It’s so versatile to wear, timeless and I see so much value in this style which can be worn in a casual chic way or more sophisticated by changing accessories. In our Pre-Fall ‘Superhero’ Collection we have numerous shirt dresses in eclectic prints.”

“I’m really drawn to statement dresses right now,” Jermanus adds. “Something with an artful silhouette and luxurious hand feel, such as our Guardian Midi Dress, Leonard Fringed Dress and Dana Midi Dress. I’m always attracted to dramatic sleeves to make an impact and these are all perfect for a summer wedding, long lunch or a garden party.”

Jermanus explained that collaboration is a key element in Alémais’ designs, highlighting that this year they’ve worked with Paris-based illustrator Lou Benesch. “Each season we work with various artists to create unique prints, so naturally my final stand-out trend has to be one of our artist collab prints!”

“Storytelling is central to the collection,” she adds. “Lou’s drawings depict mythical beasts and fantastical creatures which are found in the Lou and Seeker stories for this season. They are such special conversational pieces, which will be cherished for seasons to come.”

FarmRio

“Summer dresses are our love language at FARM Rio,” explains Head of Design, Thalita Cotrofe. “For 2023, we predict low-waist, cut-out and artisanal styles being the key trends of the season.”

The brand is known for it’s elaborate, colourful designers and this season Cotrofe highlights that it’s all about dresses that make a statement. “The Sand Jungle Midi Dress, for example, is an effortless style that packs a punch, cut from breezy linen and adorned with a jungle print and tassel hem.”

“We create one-of-a-kind pieces, for the woman with a free spirit and love of colour.”

Rixo

Versatility is key in the Rixo world this summer, co-founder Henrietta Rix tells Marie Claire. “I really believe people want more out of their clothes now, rather than just a one-time wear/ occasion purchase. Having key dresses you know you’ll wear over and over again is only going to be more important to customers.”

Aside from purely design-related trends, Rix believes eco-conscious consumers will turn to renting as a means to bring new life to their existing wardrobes this summer. “I believe renting summer dresses will also be really popular this summer, especially for occasions like weddings. We’ve just introduced rental for key occasions and bridal styles, and it’s an area of the business I’m really excited about.”

We Tried the Viral Uniqlo Bag Dubbed the Hottest Product of 2023 — It

If we told you this summer’s most sought-after handbag style was only $20, would you believe us? The affordable crescent-shaped Uniqlo bag is the hottest crossbody bag of 2023, according to the fashion trend-spotting site Lyst Index. It’s got the viral chops to back it up, too — amassing more than 2.4 billion views on TikTok.

The Uniqlo bag’s skyrocketing popularity has it joining the ranks of other coveted nylon bags like retro Lesportsacs, reissued Pradas and the hard-to-get Lululemon Everywhere bag. After sifting through rave reviews, we snagged the small but mighty Uniqlo shoulder bag to try for ourselves.

Uniqlo Round Mini Shoulder Bag

Round Mini Shoulder Bag

Uniqlo Round Mini Shoulder Bag

Why is the Uniqlo bag so popular?

To determine the world’s top fashion items, Lyst analyzes more than eight million items, factoring in things like social media mentions, searches and sales as well as the global demand for the product versus the volume of stock available. After going viral and selling out multiple times, Uniqlo’s unisex Round Mini Shoulder Bag took the top spot early this year, beating out trendy designer clothing and accessories to become the cheapest product ever to be featured in the Lyst Index.

preview for Good Housekeeping US Section: Beauty & Style

Our honest thoughts

As an on-the-go New Yorker, I was amazed at how much I could fit inside, thanks to a gusseted design that features a sturdy zip closure, an interior pocket and piping around the edges to help the bag hold its structure. Its ample room meant I could fit a beverage and a snack inside the bag without having to leave my hand sanitizer or phone charger behind.

Other GH staffers found the bag just as effective, especially for travel. “Since it’s small and worn close to the body, most airlines won’t count it as your personal item,” says Senior Commerce Editor Heath Owens, who just took this olive green colorway on its maiden voyage to Puerto Rico. It lifted the burden of carrying essentials like a phone, a wallet, a passport and keys, for hands-free travel.

This content is imported from Tiktok. You may be able to find the same content in another format, or you may be able to find more information, at their web site.

TikTokers and GH editors alike love the webbed nylon shoulder strap, which lets you switch from a crossbody to a fashionable sling bag or mini hobo with a few quick adjustments. Firstfinds’ Social Media Manager Steven Morea, also known by his TikTok handle @aprilf00lsday prefers it to tote bags because it means less aimless digging.

“The Uniqlo bag is smaller and sits closer to my body, yet fits the same amount that any tote would,” adds Morea. “It’s cute, stylish and comes in many different colors, so it can match any outfit.”

Is the Uniqlo shoulder bag waterproof?

Lightweight yet durable, the nylon material holds up well to daily wear and tear. Though not 100% waterproof, the fabric is treated with a water-resistant coating that protects your belongings from rainstorms, coffee spills and other everyday inconveniences. Reinforce it with waterproofing spray every so often to help repel dirt and water.

Can I wash the Uniqlo shoulder bag?

According to the label, the Uniqlo crossbody bag cannot be machine washed or dry cleaned. While many on TikTok claim it can survive a trip through the gentle cycle, we recommend spot cleaning it regularly with a laundry detergent pen and a damp cloth.

Is the viral Uniqlo bag worth buying?

Yes! We agree that the humble nylon handbag is 100% worth the hype. If you’re looking for a simple, practical and affordable crossbody, the unisex Uniqlo shoulder bag falls in the center of that Venn diagram. After trying the bag for ourselves, with the fashion trend data to back it up, we found that you can’t beat the basics. No matter the colorway, this versatile $20 bag is a worthy addition to anyone’s arsenal of accessories.

Need some Wimbledon outfit inspiration? Here

It’s almost that time of year again! Wimbledon is just around the corner, meaning we’re on the cusp of 2 buzzy weeks in London filled with great tennis (and great outfits).

Each year, celebrities and royals take to centre court to watch some of the best tennis players in the world battle it out for the title. From The Princess of Wales, to Sienna Miller, Tessa Thompson and Maya Jama, Wimbledon has played host to so many famous faces over the years. And if you’re planning to head to the tennis tournament this year, you might be wondering what to wear.

Whether you have secured yourself some ground passes or you’re set to attend the VIP suite hosted by Evian, one thing is for sure, Wimbledon is a place to dress smartly. While the tournament doesn’t have any specific dress code for spectators, a smart casual approach is going to be your best bet.

What to wear to Wimbledon, according to celebrities: Tessa Thompson

So what does this mean exactly? Well, if you look to celebrities for inspiration you’ll see them dressed predominantly in tailored separates or summer dresses. Think button-down shirts paired alongside wide-leg trousers or printed midis with flowly skirts and cap sleeves.

Many people stick to a light summery palette too, often consisting of white, blue and even shades of navy. Sunglasses are an absolute must, to keep the glare at bay and footwear should be simple yet comfortable (The Princess of Wales loves a Mary Jane).

For more on how to ace Wimbledon dressing and some shopping picks to help you along the way, just keep scrolling.

Dresses to wear to Wimbledon:

When it comes to dresses, polka dots and stripes seem to be the prints of choice at Wimbledon with stars forgoing the usual summer floral in favour of something a little more graphic. If you’re not into prints, button-down dresses in light shades of cream or beige work just as well. And of course, linen will always feel appropriate.

Separates to wear to Wimbledon:

If you’re going for separates, it’s all about choosing sleek, tailored items. Think wide leg tailored trousers, paired alongside a waistcoat or button-down shirt. Relaxed suiting is also a great option, if you’re after a more polished look.

The "Pineapple" Hair Trick Will Give You Defined Curls Overnight

Anyone with curly hair has heard it: “Your hair is so pretty, I wish I had curly hair!” It’s meant to be a compliment, but curly girls know that having a good hair day is so much harder than it looks. Curls can be unpredictable and difficult to control, and there are days when having wild curls feels less than enviable.

The difference between fighting with your curls and loving them really lies within your hair care routine. Whether or not you subscribe to the Curly Girl Method, finding the right products and hairstyles for your specific curl type makes managing curly hair so much easier, and treating your curls right makes your hair so much healthier, in turn.

Below, you’ll find simple tips and top-rated curly hair products that will keep your waves and curls looking shiny and strong. Then, advance to seven easy curly hairstyle ideas you can tackle at home.

Best hair tips for styling curly hair

Curly hair is different from other hair textures: It requires more hydration, less washing, and, if we’re being honest, more patience than straighter hair types. But curly hair doesn’t have to feel like a curse! These tips, products, and pointers will help you find the best curls of your life with minimal effort — some will even give you better hair while you get your beauty sleep.

1. Always comb your hair from the bottom up.

kat wirsing

Detangling hair from the bottom up allows you to gently detangle each knot, rather than compounding knots toward the bottom and yanking your way through. To protect hair from damage and to detangle efficiently, our experts strongly advise that you saturate hair with a quality hair detangler and always rely on a wide-tooth comb or a specially-designed detangling brush to rake through curly hair.

“Curly hair is the most fragile type on the block, and each curl is a potential breaking point,” explains hairstylist Andrita Renee. “Using a wide-tooth comb is the gentlest way to detangle curls and it doesn’t disrupt the natural curl pattern as much as a brush would.”

2. Get regular trims to avoid split ends.

Curly Hair Tipspinterest icon

Kathryn Wirsing/Designed by Dana Tepper

Damaged hair is never a good look (not to mention split ends can make your hair frizzy!). If you want healthy curls that look bouncy and fresh, head to the hairstylist every six to eight weeks for a quick trim.

3. Use product “cocktailing” to define and hydrate curls.

“Product cocktailing is simply mixing two or more products together to meet your specific styling needs,” explains Renee. Her two favorite cocktails: smoothing serum plus mousse for curls, or coconut oil plus styling gel made for curly hair. Together, these products allow for supreme hold without leaving your hair dry or crunchy.

4. Or opt for a one-step hair hydrator.

If you don’t have the patience for cocktailing, your best bet for a one-step solution is a serum, a curl cream or a leave-in for curly hair which helps to not only smooth your curls but gives them definition and separation, helping curls to hold their form without giving any crunch. “Use three or four pumps at a time. Emulsify the product in your hands and gently take it through your curls,” advises New York City-based hairstylist and colorist Patrick Kyle.

5. Don’t weigh curls down with too much (or too heavy) product.

curly hair tips

kat wirsing

When your hair goes through a dry or dull phase, what you don’t want to do is weigh it down with a ton of product. Simply use your fingertips to apply a dime-size blob of styling cream or oil to your ends (wet or dry hair is fine!), giving them extra moisture and bounce. If your hair is thinner or you’re looking for a lightweight hydration, spritz an easy-to-use conditioning spray all over the hair, focusing on the ends. For more hydration and definition, smooth a cream-based leave-in conditioner onto soaking wet hair.

6. Be careful with how you apply product.

Try applying your favorite styler to soaking wet hair with wet hands using the “praying hands” method as not to disrupt the curl pattern: The combination of the product plus full hair saturation ensures that curls stay frizz-free.

7. Try the “pineapple trick” to keep curls defined overnight.

MYK Silk Pillowcase

Silk Pillowcase

MYK Silk Pillowcase

Credit: Yala

“Pineappling” is a technique in which the hair is loosely gathered at the highest point of the head, usually before sleep. This protects the curl pattern while helping your hair maintain natural volume while also preventing excessive bedhead. Simply take the pony out and give hair a shake when you’re ready to wear it down.

To keep hair looking even more pristine between wash days, our experts recommend using a silk hair scrunchie for this technique to prevent hair breakage and ponytail creasing. And if you’re not sleeping on a silk pillowcase already, it’s time to make the switch: The benefits of these super-smooth pillowcases are proven to reduce bedhead by reducing friction on the hair overnight, which makes hair look sleek and hydrated day after day.

8. Use a diffuser to even out your curl pattern and add more body.

How to use a diffuser

Ben Ritter

If you’re not using the attachments that come with your hair dryer, you’re missing out. By dispersing your hair dryer’s stream of hot air into a larger space, a hair diffuser can “minimize a lot of the frizz that comes when curly hair is naturally air dried,” explains stylist Britt White. Plus, it can help even out your curl pattern and boost the volume of heavy curls, giving more body to your hair. Here’s how to use your diffuser:

  1. First squeeze out the extra moisture in your hair after showering using a microfiber towel in scrunching motions. Don’t use a traditional towel, and don’t turban your hair: While these popular techniques may work for your straight-haired friends, it will disrupt your curl pattern and cause frizz for you.
  2. Apply your favorite hair products and thermal hair protectant (you should be using a heat protectant any time you use heat tools on your delicate curls to protect hair from damage).
  3. Plop your strands into the diffuser, cupping the tool around your hair.
  4. Repeat until you’ve got defined curls all over. It’s OK if your hair isn’t 100% dry: Letting curls air dry a bit can prevent frizz, too.

9. Refresh curls with a curling iron or wand.

It may sound silly to curl already-curly hair, but when they’ve gotten saggy or unruly, it’s a great way to perk them up. “Pick a curling iron that’s about the same diameter as your curls,” says Sabina Yannone, a Los Angeles-based hairstylist who specializes in curly hair. “If you think your curls are too tight, go up one size to stretch.” If you want tighter curls, choose a smaller-sized barrel.

A curling wand is a great tool to fine-tune naturally curly hair: It allows you to reshape curls exactly where they need some TLC, whether it be at mid-strand, the root, or the end, without having to roll the entire strand up in the iron. The result is perfectly defined curls in just a few minutes’ time.

The cutest curly hairstyles to try ASAP

Now that you know how to treat your curls, you can style them properly, too. Whether you’re trying to keep your curls from getting unruly in the wind or preventing your strands from sticking to your face in the humid summer heat (sweat! frizz!), these styles offer great way to wear your hair down and keep it away from your eyes.

Braids are a godsend for curly girls: By braiding your hair into a different curl pattern, you lock in your moisturizing products and treatments during the night and wake up with a beautiful, low-maintenance style in the morning. Read on for easy, glam, and protective styles, perfect for day or night.

Get the look: Gather your hair into a ponytail and secure it with an elastic. Divide your hair into two sections, wrap one around the base of the ponytail and pin it with a bobby pin. Wrap the second section around the first and secure it with a bobby pin, then gently tug the bun with your fingers if necessary to give it a full, rounded shape.

Get the look: Leave a small section of hair out while forming your topknot. Once your initial style is complete, braid the section and wrap it around the base of your topknot, securing it with a bobby pin for an elegant overall look.

3. Braided Headband

kathryn wirsing

Get the look: Create a deep side part in damp hair and braid along the hairline toward the opposite temple. When you get past your ear, pin the braid beneath the rest of your hair with bobby pins.

4. Basic Braids

curly hairstyles

kathryn wirsing

Get the look: Try Dutch braids, French braids, or cornrows: It’s the easiest and most versatile protective style a curly-haired girl can ask for. Renee recommends using a hair priming product to moisturize beforehand, then detangle your curls completely to “significantly reduce the amount of tension that will need to be used for braiding.”

Divide your hair down the middle into two sections, then separate each section into three pieces. Starting at the front and top, create a three-strand braid. Cross the piece on the right into the middle underneath the center piece, then repeat on the left side, gradually adding more hair as you braid down to the bottom. Secure each braid with an elastic or clip.

Get the look: Apply a lightweight styling gel or pomade through your hair. Then, use a boar brush to pull the top section of your hair back into a sleek ponytail and anchor it with a hair tie. Ruffle the back a bit with your fingers for extra volume. This is another pretty option that allows you to wear your curls down while keeping them out of your face.

6. Three Braid Updo

kathryn wirsing

Get the look: Separate your hair into three parts and create a three-strand braid with each section. Hold the top section, pull it across the back of your head and secure it with a bobby pin. Repeat with the second and third sections, then secure any loose pieces with bobby pins. Voila! An unbelievably easy updo.

7. Victory Curls

Get the look: This is a curly girl spin on that post-World War II look known as “victory rolls.” Part your hair off to the side, twirl a section of hair from the front, then pin it toward the back. Repeat on the other side. Add sexy cat eyeliner to take this vintage-inspired look up a notch.

What to wear to Glastonbury: Your guide to an understated festival wardrobe

Every year, when June rolls around lucky ticket holders begin to ask themselves the same question: What do I wear to Glastonbury?

The festival, which began in the early 1970s, has gained international recognition for its headline acts and celebrity attendees, yet the concept of dressing for the event can still come as a struggle for some.

While historically some festivals have been synonymous with statement-making, over-the-top attire—Coachella, we’re looking at you—it seems the tide is starting to turn, with attendees now opting for more understated looks. Gone are the days of wear-once, trend-led festival purchases that will end ultimately end up in landfill, now attendees are opting for wardrobe staples that they will wear again and again.

At Coachella, in particular, this year, we saw celebrities forgo the usually flashy looks in favour of outfits that epitomised “quiet luxury.” In fact, both Kendall Jenner and Hailey Bieber opted for causal outfits comprised of jeans and tank tops.

We’re willing to bet Glastonbury follows suit this year, with guests choosing tried and tested summer essentials.

Dermatologists Warn This Skin Type Should Never Put Coconut Oil on Your Face

You may have heard that you can use coconut oil on hair to strengthen and condition your strands, but what about on your skin? Turns out, coconut oil can be a great skin moisturizer — but with some caveats.

“While coconut oil has great moisturizing properties, it’s not ideal for all skin types,” says Michelle Henry, M.D., founder of Skin & Aesthetic Surgery in Manhattan. But before we get into who should use coconut oil on their skin and who should steer clear, let’s talk about the basics of the ingredient itself.

First things first: What is coconut oil?

“Coconut oil, also known as cocos nucifera oil, is an edible oil that is made from the white lining, or kernel, of matured coconuts that has a high saturated fat content,” says Dr. Henry. Virgin coconut oil is slightly different from refined coconut oil, as it’s made by cold pressing fresh coconut meat, which is thought to retain more of the nutrients from the fruit.

“Its melting point is 78°F so on a warm day you might see your jar of typically solid coconut oil liquify, but it will re-solidify below 78°F,” explains Good Housekeeping Institute Beauty Lab Chemist Danusia Wnek.

The soothing oil can be used on the skin and for certain skin and scalp conditions. “It is also somewhat antiseptic and useful for conditions like eczema,” says Dr. Henry.

What are the main benefits of coconut oil for skin?

Some of the top beauty benefits of coconut oil include:

  • It hydrates skin. “Coconut oil acts as an emollient, which aides in the moisturization of skin,” Wnek says.
  • Locks in moisture. “A 2014 clinical study showed that pediatric patients with mild to moderate atopic dermatitis who used virgin coconut oil for eight weeks showed improvement in decreased transepidermal water loss and increased skin hydration,” shares Wnek. “It also showed that none of the pediatric subjects developed adverse reactions.”
  • It soothes inflammation. “It has anti-inflammatory properties that help to reduce skin irritation,” Dr. Henry says.
  • It has antimicrobial properties. “The rich fatty acid content found in coconut oil can help stop the growth of certain microorganisms on the skin,” Dr. Henry says.
  • It protects from certain infections. “[This is] thanks to the saturated fats,” explains Dr. Henry.

Is coconut oil good for your skin?

That really depends on your skin type. While coconut oil does provide major moisturizing and anti-inflammatory benefits, not everyone will benefit from using it. “Coconut oil is highly comedogenic, which means it can clog your pores and increase the appearance of blackheads, whiteheads and acne,” Dr. Henry says. So if you have oily or acne-prone skin, it’s not the best choice for your face. “However, it is usually okay to use on the body,” says Dr. Henry.

What skin types is coconut oil best for?

“As an oil-based ingredient, coconut oil is best used on dry skin types that require extra boosts of hydration,” says Dr. Henry. And in case we haven’t stressed this enough, Wnek adds that “while coconut oil might be safe to use as a cosmetic, it can be comedogenic and clog pores, so those with oily or acne prone skin should avoid this ingredient.”

Can coconut oil be used daily on skin?

Due to its highly comedogenic nature, Dr. Henry doesn’t recommend applying coconut oil every day and night. “You need to find out the right usage for your skin,” she says, “and to do that it’s best to start slow, like once or twice a week, and increase as your skin allows.”

Dr. Henry recommends using a dime size amount of oil, rubbing it between your fingers until it becomes liquid in texture and gently applying it on the face and neck in light, circular motions.

Are there any side effects of using coconut oil on skin?

In terms of safety concerns, the short answer is no. “The Cosmetic Ingredient Review, which reviews the safety of cosmetic ingredients, has stated that coconut oil is safe to use as a cosmetic ingredient,” says Wnek. “Additionally, a 2006 double-blind randomized patch test study published in Dermatitis, the American Contact Society journal, showed that coconut oil did not cause negative skin reactions and therefore wasn’t an allergen,” she adds.

However, when it comes to potential reactions based on specific skin types, especially acne-prone skin, Dr. Henry shares that “coconut oil can cause clogged pores, the appearance of blackheads, whiteheads, acne spots and irritation.” It also has a thicker texture, which can create an overall waxy-oily finish on the skin.

This is the French girl

It is often thought that your footwear can make or break an outfit. Whether you want to elevate a look or casual it down, shoes can make a huge difference to an outfit’s overall feel.

Here at Marie Claire, we recently spoke to French influencer and Rouje designer Jeanne Damas, to get her thoughts on the French wardrobe staples everyone should own, and throughout that conversation learned a very interesting tidbit about how the style icon elevates her outfits.

“I love to wear mules,” Damas explained. “I feel like they upgrade even the simplest looks.”

Evidently, Damas is not alone, it seems like mules (and in particular, heeled mules) are a footwear staple French women have been using to elevate outfits for years. All you have to do is look to streetstyle images of Paris Fashion Week to realise the shoe is absolutely everywhere.

Whether you’re wearing jeans and a white t-shirt, a midi summer dress or a pair of linen trousers, adding a heeled mule to the look will instantly add a polished element to your outfit.

(Not to mention, the lack of an ankle strap will seriously work to elongate the appearance of your legs.)

If you’re looking to invest in a pair of mules this summer, there are so many options around on both the designer and high-street ends of the spectrum.

When it comes to designers, Amina Muaddi has created the cutest pairs in a number of rainbow colours which come adorned with crystal embellishments. While places like Toteme and Bottega Veneta have understated options, if you’d like to go for a more minimal aesthetic.

Over on the high street, Zara has a Y2K-inspired pair with bow detailing that looks as if it’s been plucked straight from the ’90s, while Mango has offered up a sleek beige iteration that will go with everything you own.
