Kate Hudson's SAG Awards Dress Caused a Lot of Commotion

What’s pink, frilly, designed by Valentino, and causing a commotion on Twitter? No, not Nicole Kidman’s Critics’ Choice Awards dress. That was two weeks ago! This time, we’re talking about the dress Kate Hudson wore to the Screen Actors Guild Awards. And we’re definitely not the only ones talking about it!

Twitter is full of live dress commentary during award-show red carpet broadcasts, but nothing seemed to fire up the tweeting masses last night quite like Kate’s tiered, bubblegum-pink gown with a high black lace neck, black velvet ribbon belt, and heart-shaped black polka dots. It was just too much whimsy for some people to handle.

Oh, don’t worry, Aimée, plenty of other people did.

5 Places to Find Petite Clothing on a Budget

Any petite people out there?

At 5’4″, I’m technically NOT petite: I still, however, find many clothes almost comically long on me (particularly things like jeans and trousers), which means I’m no stranger to the petite clothing sections of my favourite high street retailers. Here are five of my favourites…

Miss Selfridge

Not only does Miss Selfridge’s regular section go down to a UK size 4, making it suitable for the smaller shopper, the petites section is a particularly good one: in fact, I frequently spot items in the petites section that aren’t available in regular sizes. Their petite clothing section runs from size 4 – 14, and is updated often, so there’s always something new.

New Look

New Look also has an extensive petites section, and a slightly wider sizing range, running from UK 4 – 16. If you don’t find anything in women’s clothing section, however, the teens section is also worth a look: while many teens and children’s sections are unsuitable for women in terms of the cuts and patterns, this selection is more “grown up” than many I’ve come across, and some of the the larger teens styles will also work for petite women.

ASOS

Is there ANYTHING you can’t find at ASOS? Probably not, and while their petite clothing section doesn’t contain all of the same styles you’ll find in ‘regular’, the site also carries plenty of petite clothing from other brands, too, making it a good place to see a lot of different options in the same place. ASOS’s main line also goes down to a UK size 4, so some pieces may be suitable for petites.

Chi Chi London

One of The Fashion Police’s favourite eveningwear brands, Chi Chi London has extensive petite and curve sections, offering many of the same styles they do in ‘regular’.

Topshop

Topshop’s petite section can be a little bit hit and miss, and I really wish they’d start offering their petite jeans in the same range of washes and styles that are available in the regular section, but it’s still better than average, and, as with their Arcadia stable-mates, Miss Selfridge, I’ve occasionally stumbled upon awesome petite clothing which isn’t available in regular, so it’s always worth a look.

Anyone else got some petite clothing tips to share?

14 Best Nail Art Ideas for Super Bowl LII

Sure, you could throw on a jersey and call it Super Bowl Sunday. But if you really want to prove your devotion to your team, take a cue from one of these creative nail art ideas. We’ve rounded up fun ideas for both Patriots and Eagles fans — plus a few “evergreen” designs if you haven’t picked alliances yet.

New England Patriots

First, you want to coordinate your polish with the team colors. These will do the trick: Sally Hansen Color Therapy Nail Polish ($5, target.com), Essie Nail Color in Really Red ($9, amazon.com), China Glaze Nail Lacquer in Platinum Silver ($8, amazon.com), Nails Inc. White Out Nail Polish ($11, sephora.com)

Advertisement – Continue Reading Below

With one hand covered in team symbols and colors and the other literally spelling out “Let’s go Patriots,” you’ll definitely nail the #1 fan thing.

Delicate team-color stripes make up the French tips of this manicure, while the accent nails are painted up to look like footballs. Try China Glaze Mahogany Magic ($8, amazon.com) for a perfect brown shade.

It’s a wrap! No, really, it’s literally a wrap. The team name is so perfectly “painted” on these nails because they’re Jamberry stick-ons.

These super-sparkly nails make us think Patriots colors would look great in a figure skating outfit.

In addition to different designs on each nail (including Tom Brady’s number, of course), the Patriots logo is cleverly split up on the thumbs.

Five Reasons to Start Your Own Business

5 reasons to start your own business

One of the first questions people tend to ask me when they find out I’m self-employed is whether I’d ever consider going back to “traditional” employment.

The answer?

HELL, NO!

I’ve been self-employed now for over a decade, and I STILL regularly have nightmares in which I inexplicably decide to go back to one of my previous office jobs. It really IS a nightmare, too, because while I’m the first to admit that self-employment isn’t for everyone, I’ve never regretted it for a moment: in fact, my only real regret is that I didn’t do it sooner.

Here are the five main reasons I decided to start my own business: and why you might want to try it too…

01. FREEDOM

This will sound overly-dramatic, but, for me, traditional employment always felt a little bit like a prison sentence. (Calm down, I said “a little bit”…) Sure, it was a low-security prison, if anything, but my time spent in it was not my own: my time quite literally belonged to someone else, and I felt trapped in each of those office buildings, totally resenting the fact that I wasn’t allowed to leave until I was given permission. By becoming my own boss, I regained the freedom to live my life on my own terms: and that was worth far more to me than job security, or the monthly salary I used to draw.

5 reasons to start your own business

02. A JOB YOU ACTUALLY WANT TO DO

They say that if you get a job you love, you’ll never work another day in your life. I actually DON’T subscribe to that idea: no matter how much you love your job, it IS still a job at the end of the day, and there will always be elements of it that don’t exactly set your world on fire – that’s just life. Having said that, I DO love my job – and that’s not something I ever thought would be possible. For years, I’d resigned myself to the idea that work was just something to be endured, and that I’d spend most of my life unhappy, living only for the weekends and holidays which meant an escape from the boredom. When I became self-employed, though, I found myself actually looking forward to work – and having to drag myself away from desk in the evenings and weekends. No, I don’t enjoy every single second of it, and there are some days when I’d rather be doing almost ANYTHING else at all. There are far more good days than there are bad ones, though – and that’s definitely a “WIN” as far as I’m concerned.

03. NO LIMIT TO WHAT YOU CAN ACHIEVE

In my last “real” job, I’d basically gone as far as I could have in the company: if I’d wanted to progress my career, or earn more, my only choices were to wait for someone higher-up the ladder to resign, and hope I got their job, or look for something else. Even if I HAD found something else, I’d have basically had to just start the whole process over again: and again, and again, and again. As the owner of my own business, however, there’s no limit to what I can do with my career: my hard work benefits me, and me alone (As opposed to all of those evenings and weekends worked without overtime, purely to make more money for the company I worked for). Of course, there are downsides as well as upsides to this, but in general, I find it really inspiring to think about the limitless possibilities out there – if I can just figure out how to achieve them!

04. CONTROL OVER YOUR WORKING ENVIRONMENT

This might sound silly to some, but I’m the kind of person who is really affected by my surroundings, and I used to find the grey, sometimes windowless offices I worked in incredibly depressing. I’d be stuck inside them from morning to night, which, in the depths of winter, meant rarely getting to see daylight. When I started my own business, I loved being able to set up my office the way I wanted it – or even being able to work from my bedroom, or outdoors, if I wanted to.

05. YOU MAKE THE ‘RULES’

Want to change the way you work – or even the direction of the company? No problem: when you’re your own boss, YOU get to call the shots, without having to run every decision past a committee, or seek someone else’s approval. That can be scary, as well as liberating, of course – but once you’re used to being your own boss, it can be hard to go back!

Any other self-employed people out there? What are your favourite things about being your own boss?

Easy at-home exercise routine – Latest In Beauty Blog

If you ask anyone about their 2018 New Year resolutions, there’s a high chance that upping their exercise game is on the list, and before your eyes roll back into your head, hear us out…

Joining a gym isn’t always necessarily the answer as exercise can quickly feel like an expensive chore, therefore we have put together a few at-home exercises that can be done anytime, anywhere. We’re hoping these will help us all to stay energised and keep up the fitness resolution throughout and beyond January.

It is always important to start with at least a 5-minute warm up to work on your muscles while increasing your heart rate. If you own a skipping rope, this is a fantastic way to warm-up. If you don’t, don’t worry, but should you want to buy one you can do so cheaply. A few examples here.

Skipping warm-up

– 2 minutes – Low-intensity skip
– 20 seconds – High-intensity (high knees, faster pace) / 10 seconds low-intensity skipping
– 20 seconds- High-intensity (high knees, faster pace) / 10 seconds low-intensity skipping
– 20 seconds- High-intensity (high knees, faster pace) / 10 seconds low-intensity skipping
– 30 seconds – Rest
– 1 minute – Low-intensity skipping

Standard warm-up

60 seconds – March on the spot (stand with your feet shoulder-width apart and lift your left leg up to your chest then back to the floor, followed by your right leg. Repeat for 60 seconds)

60 seconds – Walk outs (stand with your feet shoulder-width apart. Bend at the hips and plant your hands on the floor, shoulder-width apart, a couple of inches in front of your feet. Walk your hands forward until your body is in a push up position. Now reverse the movement and return to standing)

60 seconds – Jumping jacks (Stand with your feet together and your hands at your sides. Simultaneously raise your arms above your head and jump up just enough to spread your feet out wide. Quickly reverse the movement and repeat.)

60 seconds – Alternate lunges with rotation (Stand with your feet hip-width apart. Step forward with one foot and slowly lower your body into a lunge. Your front knee should be bent at 90 degrees and your rear knee should be a few inches off the floor. As you lunge, rotate your upper body toward your lead leg. Rotate from your upper back—not your lower back. Pause, and return to the starting position. Now repeat with the other leg leading and repeat).

30 seconds – Double arm rotation forwards (Stand with feet shoulder width apart and arms by your side. Swing both arms simultaneously forwards as if drawing a circle with each arm).

30 seconds – Double arm rotation backwards (Stand with feet shoulder width apart and arms by your side. Swing both arms simultaneously backwards as if drawing a circle with each arm).

Now that you’re all warmed up, you’re ready to tackle the at-home HIIT (High Intensity Interval Training) burner. HIIT combines quick bursts of exercise with recovery periods, and the reason for its popularity? The results proven from short explosive exercise are great! This also means the added bonus of shorter exercise sessions (see, it’s not all bad…)

HIIT raises the heartrate very quickly, providing you are putting 100% effort into the burst of exercise. It is essential that you work as hard as you possibly can during the intervals and take the rest in-between to reap the rewards. The key to success is to make sure that you do every set properly and that every rep is precise; go for technique on your first few rounds and then build up to speed.

Home workout

There are a total of six exercises and you have four rounds to complete them, with 30-40 seconds in-between each round (so the recovery after exercise six is always longer).

Round 1 – 20 second interval and 20 second recovery
Round 2 – 30 second interval and 20 second recovery
Round 3 – 40 second interval and 20 second recovery
Round 4 – 20 second interval with 20 second recovery

1-Squat with knee lift II

Exercise 1: Squat with knee lift

Stand with your feet shoulder-width apart and drop into a squat. Keep you back straight and make sure your legs are bent at 90 degrees. Power back up and bring your right knee up to meet your left elbow, then back into a squat and back up with a left knee up. That’s one rep.

1-Squat with knee lift IV

Exercise 2: Burpee

Stand with your feet about twice shoulder-width and your arms hanging naturally by your sides. Push your hips back, bend your knees, and lower your body into a sumo squat until you can place both hands on the floor between your feet. Jump or walk your legs back so you’re in a push up position. Quickly pull your legs back into a sumo squat and then stand up. That’s one rep.

3-Bicycle Crunch copy

Exercise 3: Bicycle crunch

Lie on your back and bring your hands up to your temples. Crunching your abs, bring your left knee in towards your waist while simultaneously bringing your right elbow in to meet it, then swap sides. It should be a fluid motion, as if you were riding a bike. To challenge yourself you can speed the movement up and slow it down.

4-Glute Bridge III

Exercise 4: Glute bridge

Lie on your back with your knees bent and arms out to the sides. Lift your hips off the mat so your back, hips and thighs are in a line. Remember to keep your glutes and core engaged. Then lower your hips to the floor. Repeat the motion.

Exercise 5: Butt kicks into high knees

Stand with your feet shoulder-width apart. Kick your feet up behind you one at a time until the heel touches the glutes and pump your arms at the same time. Repeat 10 butt kicks and then swap to 10 high knees, raising your knees in front of your chest and pumping your arms.

6-Plank I

Exercise 6: Plank

A plank is simple but effective if you are in the right position! Assume a push up position, but bend your elbows and rest your forearms on the floor. Your body should form a straight line from your head to your ankles. Now tighten your core and remember to breathe.

Some food for thought before we finish; it will make it much easier to stick to a healthier way of life if you remember to get plenty of rest and drink at least two litres of water each day. It is also good to remember that getting fit and staying healthy is as much what you put into your body as the exercise you take, so remember to make better choices this January to really reap the rewards of your New Year’s resolution!

Working out is sweaty business, so why not add Soft & Gentle’s new Aluminium Roll On Anti-Perspirant or Dandi Patch to your box this month?

This Incredible Hair Colorist Creates ‘Dos That Are Out of This World

“I was an artist before I was ever anything else,” Ursula told GoodHousekeepingcom. “It’s pretty natural for me to find ways to leave a mark on everything.”

Sometimes she tries to create exact replicas of the artwork using extensions, while for others, she simply uses their color palettes. No matter what though, they’re always gorgeous.

As if the above pics didn’t impress you enough already, Goff also incorporates nature, exotic patterns, and pop culture icons into her creations. And her clients? They pretty much let her roll with it.

“Many of them just tell me to do whatever I want,” Goff says. “I’ll still go over any ideas I have with with them, just to be sure it’s something they will love.”

While the transformations can take anywhere from a few hours to eight or more (!), Goff says the hard work is always worth the end results. It goes without saying, but we wholeheartedly agree.

A 5-Piece Outerwear Capsule

5-piece outerwear capsule

Confession time: this time last year, in addition to having an entire room for my clothes, I also had an entire closet (and a double-one) at that, full of outerwear. Just to make matters even worse, that closet was always crammed to bursting point, and eventually it got to the stage where enough was enough, and it was time for a clear-out.

What I learned from that clear-out? That I could happily live with just five coats/jackets. I mean, I’m not GOING to, obviously: I have a few absolutely gorgeous coats that I just can’t bear to part with now that I have them, but I DID get rid of more than I kept, and in doing so, I realised that if I was starting from scratch, all I’d need would be …

A CLASSIC CAMEL COAT

Living in the UK, a good-quality winter coat is an absolute necessity. If I could only choose one, I’d go for camel every time: it really does go with everything, and it gives a classic, sophisticated look to everything you wear, making it truly one of those “can’t live without it” items for me.

A WATERPROOF TRENCH

My trusty Zara trench has been on constant rotation ever since I bought it, and it gets worn from early spring, all the way through to the end of autumn. This is another one of those items which I feel always smartens up whatever I’m wearing with it: I can throw it on over jeans and a Breton top, and I’ll instantly feel a little more pulled-together, and very “me”. I bought mine over a year ago now, but this is style Zara generally release every year – a true classic (and water resistant, too!).

A BLACK BIKER JACKET

My black biker jacket was one of the best purchases I ever made, and has more than paid for itself (in terms of cost-per-wear) in the 2+ years since I bought it. I love this jacket (mine is also from Zara, although the one in the photo is by Balmain) because the fitted, cropped length makes it perfect for wearing with full skirts, while the thick leather is fairly warm and wind-proof. It’s something I wouldn’t have thought would be my style, but as soon as I bought it, I wondered how on earth I’d been living without it all this time…

A WHITE BLAZER

Anyone want to hazard a guess where I got my white blazer? If you guessed “Zara”, congratulations: I mean, it wasn’t TOO hard a test, but go to the top of the class, all the same! I originally bought my blazer back in 2011, and I actually didn’t wear it too often – mostly because I was sure I’d just spill something on it and ruin it! Clothes are meant to be worn, though, and about two years ago I rediscovered it lurking in the back of the coat closet, and wore it so often I ended up buying a replacement (Yes, also from Zara. What can I say, I live their outerwear!), just to have ready for the inevitable moment when the original falls apart. So far I’ve managed to avoid spilling anything on either of them – although, if I do, at least I already have a backup!

A DENIM JACKET

Denim jackets are one of those items a lot of people consider a little dated, but I find mine pretty indispensable. It comes out every spring/summer, and because our summers aren’t generally too warm, it’s just really handy to be able to throw it in my bag when I’m heading out somewhere, in case I need it. (And I almost always DO…) Like my biker jacket, this one works for me because of the cropped, fitted shape, which is really easy to wear with skirts and dresses: another one I couldn’t live without!

Do you have a capsule coat closet? What’s in it?

Smoothie your way to glowing skin – Latest In Beauty Blog

Though skincare lotions and potions are certainly beneficial to our skin (gosh, we wouldn’t be without ‘em) the real power and secret to good, glowing skin comes from what we put into our bodies. In addition to drinking lots of water to remain hydrated inside and out, a smoothie is a great way to give your body an extra boost of nutrients. Today, we’ve decided to share one of our favourite smoothie combinations, which helped us on our journey to happy, healthy skin. If you’ve got a blender, access to a supermarket and an open mind, you’re good to go…

What you need

Avocado (one half)

Love it or loathe it, don’t dismiss this millennial fave (even if you really hate it, you won’t taste it). Rich in vitamin E, this powerful antioxidant steals the show when it comes to that much-coveted glow, while its high content of vitamin C supports moisture levels for optimum hydration.

Banana (one, peeled and chopped)

Not only is banana really good for your health, it’s pretty darn fab for your skin, too. This humble fruit is rich in anti-oxidants and can help to nourish dry skin, as well as smoothening ageing skin.

Blueberries (one cupful)

Oh, the modest, yet very delicious blueberry. Offering antioxidants, vitamin C and iron in abundance, blueberries are very fond of fighting free radicals, which is good for us when such nasties attack the skin and contribute to premature skin ageing.

Mango (one cupful, chopped)

Not only is this nutrient-dense fruit extremely tasty, mango is rich in beta-carotene and vitamin A, which can help enrich skin health; protecting the skin from UV rays, reducing oil production and fine lines and encouraging a rosy glow in the skin.

Spinach (as much as you desire)

Basically, the key to great skin is spinach, and lots of it. Regular consumption is great for improving the look of your skin and minimising dark circles, while the high iron content promotes a natural glow. Give skin an extra boost with Sukin’s Super Greens Clay Masque.

Fresh OJ (half cup)

Adding a little bit of vitamin C to your smoothie will enhance absorption of iron from the spinach. Plus, it’s super tasty and helps everything blend well together. An extra shot of vitamin C will always go down well with your skin, so how about adding Ooh-arr’s Rosie Glow Mask to your next box?

coconutA splash of coconut water

Now, you could solely opt for coconut water (or even almond milk) instead of the OJ, but we still like to add a splash of the coco-nutty goodness for an extra shot of hydration.

chiaChia seeds (just a sprinkling)

Because, why not? These seeds are the cherry on top when on the path to glowing skin; they’ll help reduce inflammation and dryness while encouraging a plumper look to the skin.

Drinking smoothies is thirsty work, so why not browse our latest arrivals while you relax?
