Five fragrances you need for Spring! – Latest In Beauty Blog

With temperatures slowly rising to an acceptable level to be outside, Spring is very much lurking around the corner – all rejoice! Spring, for me (Jem, Blog Editor) has always been the season where I update everything; my wardrobe, my hair, my makeup bag and of course, my scent. The new season is the perfect time to swap out your heavier winter blends for something lighter and fresher. Whether you gravitate towards floral, fresh, fruity or muskier scents, fragrances will always hold the power to evoke different feelings and memories. Thankfully, there are a whole host of beautiful spring fragrances for the new season, each one ideal for creating new olfactory memories and lasting impressions. In celebration of National Fragrance Week, here are five of my favourites…

JIMMY CHOO BLOSSOM

Harmoniously combining floral and fruity notes, Jimmy Choo Parfums’ Blossom will breathe new life into your fragrance collection ready for spring. Inspired by a fruity cocktail, this sparkling scent opens with zesty berries and citrus, followed by warming floral notes of rose and sweet pea before transforming into a more demure, delicate concoction. Musk and sandalwood form the base for a seductive finishing touch.

GLOSSIER YOU

Every time I wear this fragrance, I receive so many compliments – more than with any other fragrance I own. You know when someone just smells amazing, but you can’t work out what they’re wearing? It’s probably this. You’ll find that You makes a great first impression and smells even better as the day goes on. Each note melts in with your skin, chosen and balanced to allow the juice to be both long-lasting and true to how it smells at the beginning without changing as it dries down. Creamy, sparkling, clean and warm. That’s Glossier’s You.

COACH FLORAL

A floral fruity scent, both modern and joyful, Coach’s Floral fragrance is inspired by a luminous Spring day wandering in an American prairie. Comprising top notes of pineapple sorbet and citrus notes, followed by a floral heart of peony and Arabian jasmine, this scent is sure to create a sparkling impression. The dry down reveals the enveloping and elegant crystal musks and creamy wood base, while the bottle is beautifully adorned with a soft pink floral hangtag, reminiscent of the brand’s Tea Rose flower appliqués. The turn lock and metal tag have been redressed in rose gold for a feminine look – my fragrance tray has never looked so good.

ELIE SAAB GIRL OF NOW

This distinctive gourmand floral Girl of Now Eau de Parfum has been inspired by Lebanese delights; opening with roasted pistachio and sparkling pear before leading to a heart of essence of bitter almond and orange blossom absolute. Tonka bean and almond milk blended together leaves a lingering almond trail while patchouli reinforces the ultimate ELIE SAAB signature.

MARC JACOBS DAISY DREAM TWINKLE

I’ve always loved the Marc Jacobs Daisy fragrance family, and this new limited edition is a welcome addition to my fragrance shelf. Inspired by a shimmering oasis where the sun dazzles and water glistens, Daisy Dream Marc Jacobs Twinkle Edition is a sparkling reinterpretation of the classic Daisy Dream perfume for women. Sunny and spirited, Twinkle transports you to a beautiful place with endless blue skies, sparkling sunshine and flowers blooming everywhere. This fruity, floral fragrance opens with bursts of black cherry and fresh white floral that mingle together to evoke a sense of Springtime freshness. At the base, whipped berry mousse creates a mouthwatering scent that lingers on the skin as it dries.

Blogger of the Month: The Floral Republic – Latest In Beauty Blog

At Latest in Beauty, there’s nothing we enjoy more than spending our lunch hour scrolling through our favourite blogs and all of the posts, photos and feedback on our Build-Your-Own beauty box selection. It’s so exciting for us when bloggers and influencers share their must-have Latest in Beauty discoveries, therefore each month we like to chat to one of them right here on the blog. This month we caught up with Natalie from The Floral Republic.

Q

How do you make your blog stand out?

A

Ooh this is a tricky one. I don’t think my blog necessarily does stand out as I really just do it as a hobby, but I write entirely for myself and do what I want to do rather than trying to keep up with beauty trends which keeps it fun and takes the stress out! I keep my reviews honest and try to be informative as possible. Although I started my blog predominantly to write about beauty, I’ve found some of my most popular books are more lifestyle-based, such as book recommendations and food reviews.

Q

Your go to make-up look is…

A

I like to keep it nice and simple for my daily look. Radiant skin is a must so I mix Pixi Glow Booster with my base (I love L’Oréal True Match Foundation and Sleek Life Proof Foundation) then add a bit of contour with the Rimmel Sculpting Palette. I never go without blusher so I pop on some Bourjois Little Round Pot Blush then finish off with a tinted pink lip balm. Most of the colours in my makeup bag are pink!

Q

If you could curate your own beauty box, what would it contain and why?

A

As I’m always on the go and having to top up my makeup for events I usually keep a spare makeup bag in my handbag or desk drawer with some essentials in. If I made my own beauty box it would need to contain some of my holy grail products like: Stila Convertible Colour, Clinique Chubby Stuck, Beautyblender, Carmex Original Pot lip balm, Benefit They’re Real Mascara and Sleek Solstice Highlighter Palette

Q

If you could design a beauty collection, what would it be like?

A

I’m a sucker for Instagram-worthy packaging (like Paul & Joe and Benefit) and love multi-tasking products so I’d create a range of palettes with everything you need for day and night makeup looks. Everyone jokes about how much I wear pinks and florals so it would need to follow that theme!

Q

Hidden gem in your beauty stash is…

A

Coconut oil – I use it for everything; taking off my makeup, facial moisturiser, body moisturiser, hair mask – it’s so simple but I love it! I always keep a miniature tub with me when I’m travelling.

Q

What’s your signature scent?

A

I don’t wear a lot of perfume but I wear Soap & Glory’s Original Pink body spray every day, it is super sweet and one of my all time favourites.

Q

The blogger/YouTuber made me buy it:

A

Swatch stencils! These are what have been missing from my beauty blogging game for so long and I can’t believe I never knew about them before. I have always been terrible at swatching makeup (shaky hands!) so stopped bothering but I’m now so excited to be able to swatch perfect rectangle shapes of lipstick and eyeshadow… it’s the simple things!

Q

Favourite discovery from Latest in Beauty?

A

I got a miniature bottle of The Body Shop Oils of Life Facial Oil and I love it. I’m really trying to prevent ageing at the moment and this oil is so great at hydrating and revitalising my skin – I will definitely be purchasing the full size version.

Q

Smokey eye or bold lip?

A

I love treating myself to a massage or spa day, this is probably the ultimate thing for me to do on my own and can spend all day lounging by a pool reading a book. When I can’t afford that luxury I love nothing more than a pamper night at home – pop on a hair mask, run a bath with a Lush bath bomb, use a hydrating sheet mask and then smother myself in body butter afterwards.

Easy Ways to Pamper Mum this Mother’s Day! – Latest In Beauty Blog

I have fond memories of Mother’s Day from when I lived at home; I always liked to give my mum a day full of little indulgences – even from a young age when I insisted I could carry her tea and breakfast tray all by myself (I couldn’t). She’d complain throughout the year that we didn’t help enough around the house, but we did always spoil her on “her day”.

You don’t need to spend lots of money to make your mum feel special – a card and a thoughtful gesture is enough! Here are a few ideas on how to pamper your Mum at home – perfect for showing the number one woman in your life just how much you care, because let’s face it, she’s most definitely your number one fan and probably still does your washing when you visit.

Fresh flowers

Simple, classic, beautiful. We’re big fans of letterbox flowers and can always rely on Bloom & Wild to deliver gorgeous blooms from me. They have a good selection for Mother’s Day – we love the Violet bouquet.

Breakfast in bed

If you’re fortunate enough to spend Mother’s Day with your mum at home, get extra brownie points by serving her breakfast in bed. Croissants, scrambled eggs, fresh fruit, her favourite coffee… maybe even a glass of bucks fizz?  How indulgent.

At-home spa

Most mums are always on the go, so arranging time for relaxation will always go down a treat. Put the kettle on, let her put her feet up while you run her a bath and give her a hamper of pampering at-home spa products. If you’re feeling extra nice, book in for an at-home mani/ pedi.

Do her makeup

Who doesn’t like a mini makeover? If you’re no good at makeup, don’t worry – why not take her to a counter in a department store? Something you can both do together, for free. Afterwards, you could treat her to her favourite product (and one for you, too…)

Life lessons from mum

In the spirit of celebrating everything that’s great about mums, we got the whole team involved to share what our mothers taught us. Although there are – of course – many times I’ve not listened to my mum (and later regretted it – why are they always right?) she has passed on her wisdom and taught me many things, like how to apply eyeshadow by blending three shades together. Now I own over 20 palettes. Thanks, Mum! She also taught me how to cook and experiment with food, in addition to nailing the perfect cupcake recipe – one that I hope to share with my own children one day.

My mum taught me to let things go. She is a very calm person who doesn’t let things get to her and has the ability to move on from problems very quickly. I am the type of person who holds grudges and takes things personally, but Mum always told me to “chill” and “move on” p.s she is not a hippy” – Christina

My mum taught me to invest in your hair as you wear it everyday! Find a great hairdresser and build a trusting relationship with them so that eventually (after about 2-4 trips) they become an expert in your hair (they will learn to understand the texture, how it takes to colour, the shape of your face, how your hair changes seasonally, how you like it styled) – she also taught me to always wear an outfit to the salon (especially if you’re going there for the first time!) that represents your personal style the most so that they understand your “look” as well.

Also, take pictures of hairstyles that you love, but also include images of hair that you don’t like – hairdressers aren’t mind readers, so provide as much direction as possible.

Finally… Don’t shy away from asking your hairdresser what they’d do if they had free reign (they’re the experts) – This makes hairdressing trips a fun, exciting and collaborative experience, you might leave the salon with a cut or colour that you never thought would suit you, but looks amazing – never be afraid of change!” – Harriet

My mum taught me to always have lovely nails… painted and not chipped!” – Jess

My mum taught me the importance of perfume!  My earliest beauty memory is spraying one spritz of a pretty little bottle of Yardley fragrance on each wrist before going to birthday parties.  I was only allowed to wear it for “special occasions” and really treasured it; now, I adore perfume, have a decent-sized fragrance wardrobe to suit each mood, and don’t feel dressed without it.” – Emma

What’s the biggest life lesson your Mum has taught you? Tweet us and let us know! We’ll pick one of our favourites to win the new Mother & Daughter Box…

Best Margaritas in London for National Margarita Day – Latest In Beauty Blog

You know what they say, if life gives you limes, make a Margarita. It’s true – this wayward cocktail indisputably makes me sound wittier, dance better and feel amazing, so it’ll come to no surprise that it’s high up on my list of top alcoholic tipples. You really can’t go wrong with Tequila; whether shaken or frozen, with a salted or sugared rim, it’s the basis of a good (occasionally messy) night. Generally speaking, the classic Margarita components of tequila, triple sec and lime are easy enough to follow, but finding the balance and creating the perfect Margarita isn’t always an artless task – I’ve had to drink many to distinguish the good from the bad (not a displeasing task, I’ll admit). To celebrate National Margarita Day, I’m sharing some of the best Margaritas London has to offer. Just don’t blame me if you’re feeling far from fresh come morning…

Azulito Bar

azulito-bar
Uncovered in the basement of Wahaca’s Wardour Street restaurant, The Azulito Bar’s eclectic décor and low lighting creates a lively and friendly vibe. The vibrant bar offers 80 types of tequila and is the perfect stop-off for a freshly shaken cocktail. My got-to? The Passionfruit Margarita, giving the classic a much-enjoyed tropical twist.

Ella Canta

Cocktail bar at Mexican Restaurant Ella Canta at Park Lane Intercontinental, London - UK lifestyle blog
Designed by renowned interior architects David Collins Studio, Ella Canta itself is a work of art. Capturing the spirit of Mexico with sun-bleached dusty pink walls, mid-century wooden furniture, mosaic tiling, sombrero-style wall lights and an abundance of plants, the magic begins as soon as you sit down. Go for the Coa de Jima, which is a delectable combination of homemade spiced pineapple purée, passionfruit and champagne foam.

Tonight Josephine

Screen Shot 2018-02-13 at 14.31.15
Probably one of the most popular cocktail haunts due to its oh so Instagram-worthy decor, but Tonight Josephine – part of the Adventure Bar chain – serves up its own tasty twist on the Margarita. Alberto’s Margarita is both fresh and sour, combining Casco Viejo tequila, orange juice, lime juice, agave nectar and fresh coriander with a salt and pepper rim. This bar had me at the entrance with its ‘well behaved women don’t make history’ neon sign – I mean, why wouldn’t you want to go in?

London Cocktail Club

covent-garden-cocktail-club
There are a few of these membership-only cocktail bars in the capital, but there’s something distinct about the Covent Garden setting. Once led downstairs to the dimly lit basement via a passage you’d usually overlook, you’ll be transported back to a place that marries British Gentleman’s Club vibes with prohibition-era New York City. With red leather sofas and vintage artifacts lining the walls, after a few classic, well-mixed Margaritas, this rowdy fun time bar will have you dropping lyric bombs in no time!

Barrio

bario-brixton
Bringing a slap of Latin attitude to a number of London locations, Barrio’s colourful clash of Tropicália serves cocktails with a punch. The classic Tommy’s Margarita combines agave nectar, lime juice and Casco Viejo, served shaken over ice. Its tartness and subtle kick will always tempt you back for another.

5 Kiss-proof lipsticks for Valentine’s Day – Latest In Beauty Blog

Valentine’s Day is fast-approaching, and while dating can be tough, finding a kiss-proof lip colour doesn’t have to be! When we’re preparing for a night out, our favourite power weapon is a strong lip look – lipstick is the one product in your beauty arsenal that loves you back, more so if it lasts. Who really puts aside extra time during a date to re-apply lipstick? There’s definitely more pressing things to worry about, like whether your date is *gasps* one of those people that skips dessert.

Even if you’re too busy for kisses this Valentine’s Day, don’t miss a trick when long-lasting lip colour is concerned. Choosing a lipstick that might stick around longer than your date doesn’t have to be a faff, so we’ve rounded up some of our favourite kiss-ready lip formulas that are perfect for your romantic plans.

TOP TIPS

Long-wearing lip formulas can attract a bad rep for being excessively dry, leaving you with not so pleasant flaking lips. Although there are many great lipsticks out there, we have a couple of tricks up our sleeves to get the best out of your kiss-proof pout.

  • Firstly, don’t skimp on the prep by investing in a good lip scrub to slough away any dry areas.
  • Follow with a balm for nourishment and let it completely sink in.
  • Line lips with a good lip liner to prevent feathering.
  • Seal the deal. Lipcote is our go-to for this – it’s the original lipstick sealer and the celebrated secret behind lip colour that not only performs, but lasts. A clever transparent topcoat, Lipcote prevents fading, feathering and is transfer resistant. Simply apply lipstick, blot with a tissue and brush Lipcote’s magical transparent sealer on top.

5 First Date Stories that’ll make you laugh – Latest In Beauty Blog

From your stomach doing more somersaults than the local gymnast team, to selecting the perfect outfit and makeup look, dating is as tough as the *shudders* ‘so, have you got a boyfriend yet?’ conversation starter at family shindigs. As I approach the ripe old age of 26, I’ve come to quickly realise that I have put off the idea of dating for so long that I have actually forgotten what it’s like to date (did I ever really know? Probably not). Beyoncé has been Crazy in Love, Dangerously in Love and Drunk in Love, and yet it seems harder than ever to find a non-psychotic bachelor that also enjoys the company of cats, watching Mamma Mia and binge eating pizza (if you’re out there, apply within.)

First dates, although stressful/terrifying/often horrific, tend to be characteristically rather memorable – even when they go well. I’ve been told you have to kiss a lot of frogs before you can find your prince (thanks Disney) and therefore, dating becomes a required task. We’re now living in a time where swiping and hookups escalate from an app on our phones, and maybe I just can’t get on board with that – what ever happened to pretending your suitcase is too heavy for you to carry up the stairs only for a nice guy to come along to help you? I was going to fabricate an elaborate first date story of my own, but to be truthful, I have only ever been on one first date and it was as awkward as I’d imagined it to be – I guess I’ll know for next time not to go to a restaurant that serves garlic bread with actual chunks of garlic…

Because dating is inevitably not what we imagine it all to be, and to provide the small comfort that you’re not alone in this 2018 stale dating pool (or, let’s be real, to just make myself feel less like a destined-to-be spinster) I turned to my friends to get the low-down on some of their funniest and weirdest first dates. Read on for some entertainment and be sure to tweet us if you have any good ones! We’ll pick one of our favourites to win our Date Night beauty box!

Perfect height for an armrest

“I liked the look of a guy across a bar years ago, my friend gave him my number without telling me when I went to the loo, and after we left he texted me asking me out for a drink.  We arranged to meet a few days later, and stood next to each other side-by-side for the first time…  and he was little.  As I walked up to him, in heels, the first thing he said was “woah, you’re tall” and I blurted out “and you’re small!” and we politely proceeded to have an awkward drink knowing we weren’t interested in each other and played table football as he demonstrated a typical short man syndrome competitive streak, complete with “YESSS”es through gritted teeth and fist pumps. He won, I stopped wearing big heels on first dates, and never saw him again.” – Emma, London

Bottoms up (quite literally)

“My first, first date and my first tinder date left me wrecked with fear for a tedious meal with bolognese round my mouth and an argument over the cheque. So I decided to throw him in at the deep end and take him to a life drawing class in soho during pride week. We sat and drew two wonderfully sculpted men while cars bumped into each other outside, distracted by their bottoms in the window display of the pop up shop behind Carnaby Street. Turns out he had an art degree and the whole thing didn’t phase him at all! It was a match!” – Louella, London

Put his foot in it

“So I liked this guy and he was a friend of a friend; so I thought he MUST be normal. When he asked me out I was so excited and spent the week before obviously planning our wedding. I’m cool, I’m cool. Anyway, we were at a really nice restaurant; the wine was flowing and things were going ok… Then out of nowhere he drops the bombshell and told me he had a foot fetish. I laughed and thought he was joking. He smiled, nervously and I looked for the nearest exit. He then went on to compliment my feet!!! To cut a long story short, his mates joined, I left and he joked that he’d ‘try not to pull another girl while out’. I really know how to pick ’em!” – Jemma, Plymouth

Legged it!

“My date started by limping up to me with one leg massively shorter than the other, with a punch on the arm for a greeting. I was then subjected to a walk down a London high street whilst being repeatedly ‘bro punched’ on the arm in agreement with everything I said and a ‘yeah mate’ to boot. Once we arrived at the bar, where the barman gave me a ‘REALLY?’ side eye, I was then subjected to an hour’s talk about Tottenham Hotspur. Not wanting to be rude, I offered to buy one drink back before running to the bathroom, calling a mate and hatching the escape plan. I introduced my date to two drunk girls on the table next to ours and as he went to buy them both a drink, I legged it. Not one bit sorry.” – Vix, London

Lost in Translation

“I moved to Poland and one of my female friends set me up with a nice girl. What I wasn’t told was that she didn’t speak any English and awkwardly, I didn’t speak much Polish. There was a lot of awkward smiles and staring, and understandably, it was all a little uncomfortable. The most I got out of the conversation (I think) was that her sister was in a Convent… an unusual topic for a first date as you can imagine. I bought her a drink and that’s as far as we got…” – Sam, London

Brand of the Week: Nude by Nature – Latest In Beauty Blog

The time has come, it’s another Brand of the Week – and what an exciting one it is too. If you’re anything like us, you’ll spend a lot of time trying to make the right life choices; exercising, eating healthily, drinking enough water, the list goes on. When it comes to skincare, we’re always searching for the best products for our skin; ones that eliminate harmful toxins and chemicals we can’t pronounce. So, why don’t we look for the good in our makeup too? Well, ladies, now you can, because this week we’ve pulled out all the stops with a Nude by Nature takeover. The brand will be introducing one of their cult products each day, so make sure you keep checking back to avoid missing out ?!

nude

WHO IS NUDE BY NATURE?

Nude by Nature, founded in 2008, is Australia’s No 1 mineral makeup brand. Our favourite thing? The brand is cruelty-free and harnesses natural ‘good for you ingredients’. Formulas hone in on powerful native Australian vitamins and essentials oils, including kaolin, qunadong, macadamia, shea butter, avocado and vitamin E as well as bamboo powder for a soft-focus finish, and antioxidant-rich Australian native kakadu plum and lily pilly to benefit the skin. All formulations have been developed to provide different finishes and shades that offer an uncompromised finish, without the toxins. At last, flawless skin comes naturally!

Nude-By-Nature_LiB

WHAT WE LOVE

Here at LiB, we’ve tried many products over the years, and a stand-out for us has been the Nude by Natural Powder Foundation. Did you know that one is sold every minute? That’s pretty impressive. The feather-light SPF 15 Radiant Loose Powder Foundation formula adapts naturally to skin tones, evens out complexion, covers redness and pigmentation, and conceals enlarged pores – that’s a lot of our skin woes sorted in one hit, we love it! This is best used with the brand’s Flawless Brush – use this to gently push into the mesh sifter on the Radiant Loose Powder Foundation, tap away the excess and then buff the powder onto skin in light, circular motions. Start at the centre of the face and work outward until your desired level of coverage is achieved.

We’re also huge fans of its liquid big sister, the Nude by Nature Flawless Foundation, an oil and fragrance-free formula that is buildable from medium to full coverage while providing a long-wearing, second skin type finish. Our top tip? Apply using the Nude by Nature Buffing Brush for a seamless finish and always apply over a primer – the Nude by Nature Perfecting Primer is great for this as it creates a smooth, even base for makeup.

So, why is mineral makeup the better option? The major benefit, in a nutshell, is that it’s good for your skin. Mineral makeup products, such as those from Nude by Nature, do not contain fillers or controversial synthetic ingredients such as parabens, chemical dyes, silicones and other film forming ingredients that can clog pores and hinder skin from ‘breathing’ naturally. This can prolong and irritate existing skin problems as well as cause issues with the skin, such as redness, blemishes and acne.

TOP TIPS

So, you’ve discovered the products, now how to use them? We turned to Nude by Nature’s Brand Ambassador, Clint Dowdell for his top tips:

A singleton's guide to Valentine's Day – Latest In Beauty Blog

Oh, Valentine’s Day; 14 February, just a casual Wednesday (hump day ?), single awareness day – whatever you want to call it, this highly commercialised day is fast approaching. If you’re not in a relationship, it doesn’t mean you can’t relish in all that this ‘day of romance’ has to offer. After all, instead of single as a status, we prefer the term ‘independently owned and operated’. When you really think about it, being single on Valentine’s Day is actually pretty great; self-love is a valid thing and so is learning the value of loving your own company. Let’s not beat around the bush, Valentine’s Day also gives you a justifiable reason to buy things. Lots of things.

If you’re looking for a way to occupy your time this Valentine’s Day, we’ve got some tried and tested tips to having a truly desirable evening from the comfort of your own sofa. Side note: If you’re planning on throwing an anti-valentine’s party, then simply indulge in some pre-event self-love and pampering, but don’t forget to send us an invite. We’ll be waiting…

SINGLE? NO BIG DEAL.

  • Pizza is your Valentine and will always be there for you. That’s what we tell ourselves anyway. If there’s one thing Valentine’s Day allows (without the guilt), it’s ordering take out. Go wild, ladies.
  • Gordon, Ben and Jerry: the only three men you could possibly need on the ‘most romantic night’ of the year. Pour yourself an XL glass of gin and tonic and grab a large spoon for some much-needed ice cream action. Oh, and you’ll be glad to hear that portion control is totes not a thing on Valentine’s Day…
  • Forget pity party, it’s all about the pamper party. It may sound cliché, but a good pampering sesh is something that never fails us. We’re talking the whole shebang; a long soak in the bath, face mask, hair mask, foot soak, mani/pedi – and if you really want to treat yourself, request a masseuse to pop over for an at-home treatment. Thankfully, that’s a thing now.

  • Kick back with your celebrity crush. OK, so you might not be able to physically achieve this (we often dream of Colin Firth appearing on the sofa, alas it never happens) but a movie is a great way to enjoy the evening, especially if your celeb crush is the lead…
  • Prepare for the big day. Get ahead of the game and order in the supplies! Our Date Night Box is the perfect pre-Valentine’s treat to yourself, filled to the brim with products that are sure to love you back.
