This timeless shoe is the secret to French girl chic and it’s Hailey Bieber’s go-to

It’s no secret that French women are the epitome of chic. But exactly how French ladies make their style appear so effortless is the secret we’ve long been searching for. Now, thanks to Hailey Bieber, we’re one step closer.

Fortunately for us, the secret to stepping into your most stylish self is low-maintenance, painless, and doesn’t require trying to appear as though everything comes naturally to you while walking in six-inch heels. In fact, it’s all in a shoe.

“Moccasins or loafers are a must-have staple in any French women’s wardrobe”, says Chrysoline de Gastines, CEO of Parisian brand Balzac Paris.

Surprised to hear the secret to dressing like a Parisian is all in a pair of loafers? It’s been a long time coming. While French women have been pairing most of their looks with loafers and moccasins for years, flat shoes have quickly become the trend of the year—thanks to our newfound obsession with quiet luxury.

You can’t have missed Sofia Richie’s wedding in the South of France earlier this year, where quiet luxury was surely the theme. Since then, TikTok dubbed it “old money style” which instantly made the flat loafer a must-have item.

As with everything Sofia Richie wears—much like this iconic Missoni zig zag outfit—loafers are totally timeless. And, it’s highly likely that you already have a pair hiding in the back of your wardrobe. They tie together every outfit: whether it’s jeans and a Loewe vest, a summer dress or a tailored look for those office days. My winner for French style is a wide-leg linen trouser and loafer combination.

Loafers are definitely having their moment and they’ve quickly become Hailey Beiber’s go-to shoe. She’s pretty much worn them all summer and has proven that loafers look as good as they do with jeans and a white tee, as they do with shorts and socks.

And Bieber’s not the only one blazing a trail for the loafer as the shoe of the season. Selena Gomez took to her instagram stories recently in a pair of chunky loafers from Charles & Keith, while Dua Lipa, Dakota Johnson and Bella Hadid have also jumped on the trend. If that’s not proof that loafers can pull together any and every look, we’re not sure what is.

Now is the time to invest in a trusted pair that will see you through the end of summer, right into Autumn (when it’s cold, pair them with a sheer pair of socks). They are well worth the investment as you will reach for them year after year. Just as French fashion never goes out of style, neither have loafers and now it makes sense – it’s a French women’s style secret.

Keep scrolling for the best loafers, as chosen by a shopping writer. I’ve looked at over 100 pairs, from the best French fashion brands to high street stores, and these are my favourites.

Riley Keough channeled Daisy Jones on the Chanel FROW and it’s giving 70’s chic

If you fell down a Daisy Jones & The Six shaped hole earlier this year you’ll most likely still be lusting after all things 70’s. And it seems actress Riley Keough isn’t prepared to give up her boho queen title just yet either, as she took to the FROW at the Chanel Haute Couture AW23 Show earlier this week wearing an outfit we wouldn’t have been surprised to find hanging in Daisy’s wardrobe.

The look, which featured a purple lurex jacket and matching flared trousers alongside an oversized star necklace and power platforms, was oh-so-70’s in all the right ways. All Riley was missing was a microphone and we’d have believed she’d stepped right off the screen.

And, this isn’t the first time the actress has looked to the 70’s for styling inspo. At the Deadline Contenders Launch Party earlier this year, she took to the carpet in a Celine waistcoat, sheer ruffle blouse and flared jeans – a look which gave boho style in the best way possible.

While Riley may be taking inspo from her on-screen counterpart however, the 70s trend isn’t just a fun nod to a character. Although many trends come and go over the years, it’s one that remains ever present, looking eternally chic no matter the season. So much so that brands like Etro have built their ethos around it, while Michael Kors and Roberto Cavalli dipped their toe into a 70’s revival at their SS23 catwalks.

But why do we all love 70’s styling so much? Conveying an air of freedom and fun, its loose fabrications, whimsical prints and soft silhouettes set it apart from other trends and eras, offering something unique in most of our wardrobes.

So, if you’re ready to find your inner (and outer) Daisy Jones, keep scrolling for our edit of the best 70’s inspired pieces.

This is the chic styling trick everyone embraced at New York Fashion Week

New York Fashion Week Autumn/Winter 2023 (opens in new tab) has drawn to a close and over the last week, we have seen the best and brightest in American fashion put on a show on the global stage. Between press, buyers, influencers and industry insiders, there is no denying that fashion week attendees are certainly a chic bunch. And while NYFW is predominantly about the clothes on the runway, we couldn’t help but notice what people were wearing off the runway (opens in new tab), too.

There is a reason why street style (opens in new tab) has become such a huge part of fashion week, as often attendees can elicit just as much outfit inspiration as the models on the catwalk.

This season at NYFW, we saw one trend seriously dominate amongst the street style set and that was the rise of tonal dressing. From fashion editors to celebrities and content creators, so many show-goers embraced tonal looks, opting to wear one colour head-to-toe. Whether it was a complete block colour look or different hues of the same shade, tonal dressing certainly became the go-to look for attendees outside the shows.

Hannah Bronfman paired a red knitted dress alongside a red coat and red shoes at the Michael Kors show, while Emili Sindlev opted for a vibrant pink mini dress styled alongside a pink knitted jumper. Other street stylers were spotted in top-to-toe looks in shades of yellow, green, beige and more.

Not to mention, Queen Letizia (opens in new tab) and Kendall Jenner (opens in new tab) have also both experimented with the tonal dressing trend in recent weeks.

Yes, tonal dressing is undeniably having a moment, and it’s easy to understand why. Not only does it look incredibly chic, but tonal looks also work to elongate the body, giving the illusion of height.
