10 of the best classic designer handbags, that deserve a spot in the handbag hall of fame

Investing in a designer handbag is no small undertaking. The decision requires a lot of thought, savings and of course, research. Though don’t fret, as the fashion experts here at Marie Claire, we have the inside knowledge of the best designer handbags available.

From Chanel to Fendi, Prada and more, luxury design houses have been creating coveted carry-alls for generations—for example, did you know Chanel’s iconic flap bag was originally released back in 1955? And the Hermès Birkin bag first debuted in 1984?

In the years since their launch, these bags have not only gone on to become instantly-recognisable classics, but they have also increased in value, proving that spending on a timeless designer bag can be a lifelong investment.

In fact, Laura Fletcher, the Brand Director at Open for Vintage and all-around luxury handbag expert says Chanel’s flap bag is one of the styles that makes the best investment. “The Classic Flap Bag from Chanel is a handbag that keeps its value very well,” Fletched told Marie Claire. “The price of a Classic Flap rises by about 16% every year so it’s a great style to buy as an investment piece.”

As a trusted luxury resale marketplace, Open For Vintage has a wealth of knowledge on the kind of bags which are sure to retain not only their value but their relevance and popularity too. “Our consistent, most popular handbags are classic, iconic models from brands such as Chanel, Louis Vuitton, Hermes, Gucci and Prada,” Fletcher explained.

“We’re seeing current spikes in sales for the 1980s-1990s Chanel Classic Flap Bags and Diana Flap Bags, as well as Gucci Bamboo Bags and Horsebit Bags, particularly models with the GG canvas.”

If you’re looking to invest in a classic handbag, that will never go out of style, the aforementioned brands are a great place to start. Afterall, there are several styles which have retained their popularity for decades. Fendi’s Baguette bag is a perfect example, having recently celebrated its 25th year.

While the price tag on a new designer handbag can often be eye-wateringly high, Fletches says it can be useful to look to reputable resale sites and vintage sellers as a more cost-effective solution. “The amazing thing about resale is that you can buy vintage versions at approx. 40% less than new, making it an even more savvy purchase,” she explains.

Sofia Richie Grainge’s latest look divides fans but here’s why Missoni’s iconic print will always be classic

These days, Sofia Richie Grainge doesn’t seem to put a foot wrong in the style stakes. From her iconic Chanel wedding gown to her quiet luxury honeymoon wardrobe, she’s been turning out look after look and we (myself included) have been lapping it up.

Her most recent instagram post however seems to have divided her normally adoring fan base. Posing effortlessly in her garden in a zigzag printed co-ord, black vest top and simple sandals, I’m on board with the chic summer fit. Others however were not so complimentary taking to the comments to exclaim “Pls say chevron isn’t back” and a much more decisive, “Chevron is not back.” Both comments racked up a healthy amount of likes so it seems they’re not alone in their dislike of the graphic print. But, I’m here to argue that Sofia Richie’s co-ord, and the iconic zigzag design, is so much more than just a “chevron print” and it’s not only back but it never really went away in the first place.

Your Classic Hoop Earrings Will Be All the Rage This Year — Here

No matter your style — classic, Parisian, retro, streetwear, ‘

90s fashion — the right bit of bling can make your entire look pop. That’s why we chatted with Francesca Simons, fine jewelry publicist and founder of Francesca Simons Consulting and Jessica Kiraly, director of public relations at Mega Mega Projects, a jewelry consultancy in New York City, and other experts about the 2023 jewelry trends making their way into the spotlight. (Hint: This year, stunning emeralds, timeless pearls, shoulder-drop earrings and gold cuffs are a few styles that make the cut.)

According to Simons, jewelry lovers of all ages are again leaning toward classic, timeless pieces, like gold signet rings and one-of-a-kind heirlooms. “Older generations love to wear diamonds, gold and gemstones — it’s the same for Gen Z,” she says. “Gen Z sometimes are more price-conscious but they’re interested in the same styles.”

Maximalism is another trend taking the lead, one Kiraly believes is heavily influenced by social media. “Instagram has made the concept and practice of lots and lots of layers really popular,” she notes. “I’m also seeing many requests for shoulder-dusting earrings.”

As you browse these 2023 jewelry trends below, we hope you’ll find a gorgeous new treasure to add to your collection. These stunning picks also make thoughtful gifts for loved ones — leaving any minimalist or maximalist absolutely obsessed.
