These Face Oils Are Proven to Make You Look Younger

14 best hydrating face oils for every single type of skin

courtesy

We updated this article in November 2022 to add more information about each product, testing details and expert shopping advice. In addition to our original picks, selected by the Good Housekeeping Institute Beauty Lab, we’ve added two editor-loved face oils from Indie Lee and La Mer.

If you want to do everything you can to combat dry skin (or you want to use a gua sha), consider adding a facial oil to your routine. “Facial oils are a good way to complement everyday skincare products (like your daily moisturizer or night cream) for an extra moisturization boost, especially during dry winter months,” says Good Housekeeping Institute Beauty Lab Chemist Danusia Wnek. “The benefits include leaving skin feeling soft, smoothing texture and improving radiance.”

Face oils “should be applied on clean skin by gently pressing onto the face and the décolleté rather than rubbing it in,” Wnek says. After using a face wash, try applying “when your face is damp, as applying it on wet skin will lock in moisture.” Use a small amount to start (think a drop or two) and build up if you need more. You can even try adding a drop to your moisturizer, and then apply it to your skin.

The Good Housekeeping Institute Beauty, Health & Sustainability Lab has tested thousands of skincare products, including the best face oils. In the Lab’s most recent face oil test, our scientists started with 56 face oils, narrowing it down to the top 16 products. At the end of extensive in-Lab and consumer testing, consumer testers answered 18,904 survey questions collectively and 1,800 Corneometer measurements (a device used to calculate moisturization) were tallied to find the winners. Ahead, we’ve rounded up the best face oils for all skin types and needs, including drugstore picks and natural formulas for anti-aging, extremely dry skin, oily and acne-prone skin, according to GH Beauty Lab testing and experts. Here are the best hydrating face oils for glowing skin.

How we test the best face oils

In the GH Beauty Lab’s category test, 56 face oils across price points were label-masked and then tested by 1,112 volunteers of various skin types to narrow the field to the top 16 products.

Next, testers used the products at home in their regular skincare routines, evaluating them for effects on skin including hydration, softening, radiance-boosting, firming, wrinkle reduction, texture smoothing, irritation and breakouts. They also took note of attributes such as scent, dispensing, texture and absorption.

In the Lab, scientists used the Corneometer device to measure the moisturization effects of each formula over six hours after application. When all was said and done, consumer testers answered 18,904 survey questions collectively and 1,800 Corneometer measurements were tallied to find the winners.

What to look for when shopping for the best face oils

To find the face oil that’s best for you, consider the following factors:

✔️ Applicator: When perusing your face oil options, look for the newer-style “push-button” droppers. They feature a bulb top, and “our consumers overwhelmingly favored these devices for dosing a proper amount of oil,” Wnek reports.

✔️ Fragrance: While some consumers like fragrance in their skincare products, others don’t. Before purchasing, confirm whether or not your face oil is scented. “It is a good practice to sniff your facial oil before you buy it as many of them incorporate natural and synthetic fragrances that may be overwhelming for some,” she advises.

✔️ Bottle: Many face oils come in a glass bottle. Both the GH Beauty Lab and some of the testers suggest caution when handling them with oily hands. To avoid dropping the bottle and risking breaking it, “pipette a small amount of oil and place it on the top of your hand, close the bottle and then proceed to apply it on the face,” Wnek says.

Can you skip a moisturizer or serum if you use face oil?

No. While face oils are a great supplement to your skincare routine, they should not be your primary or sole source of moisturization. GH Beauty Lab testing has found that they don’t provide the same level of hydration that moisturizers like lotions and creams do. In addition, if you’re searching for additional benefits such as anti-aging, many face oils aren’t the best choice. “Most facial oils lack sunscreen protection and/or anti-aging ingredients, which is something that is typically found in serums and/or moisturizers,” Wnek says.

Can you use a face oil if you have oily skin?

Yes! In addition to our Beauty Assistant using a face oil even though she has oily skin, Wnek shares that GH Beauty Lab testing showed that many face oils are non-greasy. Test winners “had a nice texture that wasn’t too heavy, greasy or tacky,” Wnek says. “Additionally, on average, consumers found that facial oils weren’t irritating to skin.”

This $15 Face Moisturizer for Dry Skin is All You Need to Weather the Winter Ahead

pattern made of beauty product cream in lavender violet color bottle on pastel lavender background

Iryna VeklichGetty Images

If making your dry skin feel supple and hydrated feels like a struggle even despite drowning your complexion in hyaluronic acid and body moisturizers, that’s when a great face moisturizer for dry skin can move the needle. When dry patches, flakes and itchy spots on your face persist, it can mean your skin barrier’s compromised (read: crying for help). To quench parched skin, smooth texture and fight nearing frigid temps, you’ll want a moisture-locking cream to help weather it all.

After years of testing products at the Good Housekeeping Institute, our Beauty Lab experts believe that a well-formulated moisturizer is made with three types of conditioning ingredients: emollients, occlusives and humectants. To help narrow down the search, our chemists have researched hundreds of moisturizers over the years and found the 10 best face moisturizers for dry skin, ahead. In our most recent test, we tested 12 moisturizers with 22 consumer testers per product, collecting data from 240 surveys with questions on qualifications including ease of use, performance and satisfaction. We also measured moisturization in the Lab (a total of 1,920 data points) to see which moisturizers actually hydrate skin over a set period of time.

How we tested best face moisturizers for dry skin

Our Beauty Lab’s team of scientists and chemists evaluated 12 facial moisturizers using both consumer and laboratory testing. We know skincare isn’t one-size-fits-all, so we recruited a panel of 264 women with different skin types, concerns and goals to test. We label-masked each moisturizer, so our consumers tested blindly, using the moisturizer daily for two weeks. Testers completed questionnaires rating ease of use, performance and satisfaction. The best six overall scoring products, based on 240 collected surveys and 2,160 data points, were then evaluated in the Lab for moisturization using the Corneometer, a device that measures skin moisture levels. We recommended those top-performing picks above. Others on our list include Seal holders, of which we rigorously evaluated the product’s claims and data.

What ingredients you should look for in the best face moisturizers for dry skin

✔️ Occlusives: These ingredients form a physical barrier on skin that prevents water loss. Sealing in moisture, occlusive skincare ingredients — that includes petrolatum, dimethicone and mineral oil — simultaneously stop irritants from entering skin, which benefits sensitive skin conditions like eczema.

✔️ Humectants: Commonly used in face and body lotions, these water-loving ingredients “help attract water to the skin, keeping your complexion plump and hydrated,” according to Mona Gohara, M.D., associate clinical professor of Dermatology at Yale School of Medicine and president of the Women’s Dermatologic Society. You may recognize skincare humectants in ingredient lists as glycerin, hyaluronic acid, propylene glycol, squalane, urea or sorbitol.

✔️ Emollients: Another category of moisturizer, emollients lightly coat skin, smoothing out dry texture and include ingredients like plant oils and fatty acids.

What ingredients should dry skin types avoid in face moisturizers?

Though we did our due diligence in finding the best moisturizers out there most compatible with dry skin, keep in mind that ingredients like alcohols, fragrances, glycolic acid and salicylic acid can potentially irritate severely dry or sensitive skin. “Even retinol, which has long been famous for its ability to treat acne, wrinkles and other skin conditions, can be too harsh on dry skin,” according to Dr. Gohara. So, if you prefer a moisturizer with the vitamin A derivative, make sure you find one that pairs it with equally hydrating ingredients like the RoC cream (recommended above) does with hyaluronic acid and glycerin.

How often should dry skin types apply moisturizer?

The general rule is to apply moisturizer twice daily: once in the morning and once at night, says Dr. Gohara. “When applying skincare, it’s important to layer your products from lightest to heaviest,” she says. “For most people, especially those with dry skin, that means applying your moisturizer last.” Those with dry skin may be tempted to apply more often, but doing so may result in over-moisturizing the skin, which can result in clogged pores, blackheads and excess oil production, she adds. For best results, the Beauty Lab experts always follow the manufacturer’s instructions on the packaging.

Why trust Good Housekeeping?

GH Beauty, Health & Sustainability Lab Chemist Danusia Wnek lends over 10 years of formulation, product development, claim evaluation and efficacy testing experience to the Institute. She led the moisturizer studies that the data, above, is sourced. Danusia also contributed her scientific expertise on how moisturizers function and broke down what ingredients work best.

Associate Product & Reviews Editor Jacqueline Saguin distilled the Beauty Lab’s findings into this best-of face moisturizers for dry skin guide. She regularly collaborates with our beauty experts in writing product roundups. As someone who struggles with severely dry, eczema-prone skin, she contributed her personal knowledge to this roundup, while consulting a board-certified dermatologist for their professional insight.

This Stainless Steel Face Roller Feels Extra Cooling on Skin

pattern made of jade rollers for face

Anna EfetovaGetty Images

A sharp jawline or cut cheekbones don’t seem too far off when jade rollers exist. Like a mini massage for your face, these face rollers are sculpting tools with complementary rollers at each end that work into the contours of the face. Sculpting tools like jade rollers and gua shas actually trace back centuries to their origins in China, says Joyce Park, M.D., a board-certified dermatologist. Since then, the trend’s evolved as a skincare ritual often paired with a serum or a moisturizer and praised for its relaxing benefits.

Typically made from jade or quartz stone, jade rollers promote lymphatic drainage, which makes skin look depuffed and tighter, according to Sabina Wizemann, the Good Housekeeping Institute Beauty, Health & Sustainability Lab’s senior chemist. Rather than count on any healing properties from the stones, focus on the technique, which can “relax facial muscles and provide a cooling sensation on skin, [while] the massage could have a firming benefit over time.” So, to help you get a leg up on your skin gym, we rounded up a handful of options tested by staffers, plus top-rated picks from online reviews. Here are the best jade rollers of 2022.

How we chose the best jade rollers

The Good Housekeeping Institute’s Beauty Lab runs extensive testing across every beauty category, including skincare products to makeup products like beauty blenders. We rounded up the best picks out there after researching popular options and scouring online reviews. Based on our product expertise, we also included a few that our staffers and experts adopted into their own routines.

What to look for in a jade roller

✔️ Stone type: As the most common stone in facial rollers, jade tends to be a sturdier option, says acupuncturist and Lanshin founder Sandra Lanshin Chiu, L.Ac. So, if you accidentally drop it, it’s less prone to break. Keep in mind that cheaper forms of jade look dull and waxy are not necessarily more sturdy, Chiu says. People also shop stainless steel options for their durability and cool-to-the-touch feeling.

✔️ Size: Most jade rollers come in the same classic handle design with roller balls at each end. In terms of weight, heavier options can make it easier to glide across skin. Think stainless steel stone tools, which tend to be a bit sturdier and are especially great if you reach for yours frequently.

✔️ Move the roller upward and outward. Start from the center of the face and roll gently upward and outward so you are rolling the stone toward your lymph nodes and moving fluid drainage.

✔️ Pair with a great eye cream. Your best adversary against puffiness is skincare products. Start with an eye cream that has skincare ingredients like caffeine, humectants (such as glycerin and hyaluronic acid) and antioxidants (vitamins C, E and A) to help depuff. Wizemann also recommends aloe vera’s gel-like formulation for an instant cooling sensation.

✔️ Regularly clean your roller. Like a makeup brush, these tools constantly interact with your face and can easily spread bacteria. Keep it clean by rinsing with warm water and soap after every use and storing in a clean, dry place like a medicine cabinet.

Why trust Good Housekeeping?

With a background as an organic chemist in the hair dye, cosmetic and biotech industry, Senior Chemist Sabina Wizemann loves all things beauty-related. Over her many years in the GH Beauty, Health & Sustainability Lab, she has fashioned Lab and consumer studies on night creams, eye creams, retinols and more. Sabina also lends a hand when it comes to explaining skincare ingredients, like occlusives, and verifies product claims.

Jacqueline Saguin is the Associate Product & Reviews Editor. She collaborated with our Beauty Lab and Good Housekeeping staffers to narrow down our top picks. As sourced from our best gua sha roundup, Jacqueline also collaborated with dermatologist Dr. Joyce Park and acupuncturist Sandra Lanshin Chiu for a complete guide on shopping for jade rollers.
