Your Inner Picasso: Guide to Face Contouring  – Latest In Beauty Blog

Welcome to the world of face contouring – where makeup meets art, and your face becomes a canvas waiting for a masterpiece! Forget the days when contouring was just for the pros; now, it’s your turn to sculpt, define, and have a blast with the transformative power of makeup. Join the contouring party with our December Haul of Fame, the Jecca Blac’s Sculpt & Soften Palette.

Picture this: contouring as an empowering dance of brushes, creams, and creativity, available to everyone. Jessica Blackler, the genius behind Jecca Blac, invites you to a world where inclusivity and education reign supreme, making the Sculpt & Soften Palette the ultimate sidekick for makeup makeup novices and experts alike.

This versatile cream duo, thoughtfully crafted with cruelty-free formulations, allows for effortless contouring and highlighting. The creamy texture of the Sculpt & Soften Palette not only ensures easy application but also provides buildable coverage, allowing you to tailor your contour routine to suit your unique features. It’s like a contouring carnival at your fingertips!

Now, let’s dive into the contouring playground. The main face shapes include round, oval, square, heart, and diamond. Each shape has unique characteristics that can be enhanced through contouring.

Contouring for Different Face Shapes

Round Face: Round faces are all about those soft vibes and cute curves. But why not turn it up a notch? When contouring a round face, the goal is to enhance the structure of its soft, round features. Applying contour more deeply into the cheeks creates the illusion of more sculpted cheekbones, while gliding the product from the ear to the chin helps the jawline appear steeper and more defined, creating the illusion of cheekbones that could rival Kate Moss!

Oval Face: Oval faces, get ready to play with proportions in style! The goal? Make you the star of the show. To contour an oval face, apply the product on each side of the forehead to create a shading effect, giving the illusion of a smaller and shorter face. Extend the contour into the cheekbones to add width and sculpt the face. Lastly, apply along the outer jawline for a chiselled effect. Who needs a longer face when you can have cheeks and jawline that scream “sculpted goddess”?

Square Face: Square faces, we’re here to soften those angles! Rather than emphasising the square features, contouring is employed to diminish the angular appearance, introducing a smoothing effect. When contouring a square face, concentrate on the forehead and jawline. Applying product along the face’s perimeter contributes to a more rounded shape, softening the look of the corners of the face which are often more prominent and pointed on a square face. Voila – say hello to a more rounded, softened version of you!

Heart Face: Time to show some love to that heart-shaped beauty! Broad forehead and a pointed chin – let’s emphasise those fabulous features. Emphasise those cheeks and shade the forehead for a look that says, “I heart my face!”. To contour the jaw, concentrate on either side of the chin to achieve a softening effect.

Diamond Face: Diamonds in the rough, rejoice! To contour a diamond-shaped face effectively, concentrate on the forehead and cheekbones to create the visual effect of a shorter forehead and a more slender face. When considering contour placement for a diamond-shaped face, apply the product to the temples and the hollows of the cheeks to soften the appearance of the most angular points on the face for a more balanced look.

Whether you’re a makeup novice or a seasoned pro, face contouring with products like Jecca Blac’s Sculpt & Soften Palette is about celebrating your unique features. It’s an art form that goes beyond trends, focusing on enhancing your natural beauty and expressing your personality through the strokes of contour and highlight.

As you embark on this face contouring adventure, remember: your face is the canvas, and the Jecca Blac’s Sculpt & Soften Palette is your magic wand. Let the joy of contouring unfold, and let your unique beauty shine like never before! Get ready to contour and conquer!

A guide to the best women

A classic luxury designer watch, once unobtainable for most, is now closer to reach thanks to a host of watch brands spending their time on the more affordable end of the market. Household names, including Cartier, Rolex and Breitling are shifting the focus to clean design and quality materials, creating a host of options under £5k.

But with a plethora of new models released yearly, where is the best place to start with finding one for yourself? It all comes down to your own personal taste, says Lauren Virk, buyer at the UK’s largest luxury watch retailer, Watches of Switzerland. “When considering which timepiece to choose under £5k, it’s imperative you do your research and that you stay true to your own style and needs,” Virk tells Marie Claire UK

“There is a lot of information out there that can guide you in multiple directions and it can be overwhelming, so the main questions I would consider are: do you want a quartz or mechanical timepiece? Do you want a bracelet or a strap? Do you want an everyday timepiece, something a bit sportier, or something to simply make a statement? Something that suits your lifestyle can answer a lot of these questions, so take your time, answer these honestly, and you will choose wisely.”

“Look out for the details,” she adds. With most luxury watches at this price point, quality comes as standard, thanks to the considered craftsmanship and individual movements (the technical beating heart of the watch) so the best way to know what you like is to get hands-on.

A Step-By-Step Guide to Exfoliating Your Skin – Latest In Beauty Blog

Exfoliating is an essential step in your skincare routine as it helps buff away dead skin cells and improve your skin’s texture to reveal softer, smoother and more radiant skin. Although exfoliating is important, it’s also vital to avoid over-exfoliating so you don’t irritate your skin.
For exfoliating weekly, we recommend the Glycolic Fix Scrub from NIP+FAB, our Haul of Fame of the month. This scrubs a 3-in-1 micro-exfoliant that combines glycolic and salicylic acids to dissolve dead skin cells, refine your skin texture and tone, flush out congestion, and boost your skin’s luminosity.
Whether you’re new to exfoliating or you need extra tips on how to exfoliate, we’ve put together a step-by-step guide to help you exfoliate the right way.
Step 1
Start off by cleansing your skin with your preferred cleanser. If you’re exfoliating at night, you can opt to double cleanse your skin with a cleansing oil or balm, followed by a water-based or gel cleanser.

Step 2
After cleansing your skin, take a pea-sized amount of your exfoliant, like NIP+FAB’s Glycolic Fix Scrub, and gently massage it onto damp skin. Make sure to avoid the eye contour area.

Step 3
Use gentle, circular motions to spread the exfoliant or scrub across your face and neck. If you’re using NIP+FAB’s Glycolic Fix Scrub, this scrub is formulated with fine particles so they aren’t abrasive or rough on your skin. This scrub provides both chemical and physical exfoliation, creating a dual action facial exfoliator to give you enhanced results.

Step 4
Use lukewarm water to rinse off all traces of the exfoliant and gently pat your skin dry.

Step 5
Grab a facial mist or toner to instantly hydrate your skin and prep it for the next steps of your routine, which is applying your serum and moisturiser.

We recommend exfoliating your skin once or twice a week. However, NIP+FAB’s Glycolic Fix Scrub can be used up to three times a week. Remember to always moisturise your skin after exfoliating to prevent dryness and irritation and don’t forget to apply SPF in the mornings to protect your skin from the sun’s UV rays.

You can check out NIP+FAB’s Glycolic Fix Scrub on the Beauty Counter now.

What to wear to Glastonbury: Your guide to an understated festival wardrobe

Every year, when June rolls around lucky ticket holders begin to ask themselves the same question: What do I wear to Glastonbury?

The festival, which began in the early 1970s, has gained international recognition for its headline acts and celebrity attendees, yet the concept of dressing for the event can still come as a struggle for some.

While historically some festivals have been synonymous with statement-making, over-the-top attire—Coachella, we’re looking at you—it seems the tide is starting to turn, with attendees now opting for more understated looks. Gone are the days of wear-once, trend-led festival purchases that will end ultimately end up in landfill, now attendees are opting for wardrobe staples that they will wear again and again.

At Coachella, in particular, this year, we saw celebrities forgo the usually flashy looks in favour of outfits that epitomised “quiet luxury.” In fact, both Kendall Jenner and Hailey Bieber opted for causal outfits comprised of jeans and tank tops.

We’re willing to bet Glastonbury follows suit this year, with guests choosing tried and tested summer essentials.

As far as stylish attendees are concerned, there are few celebs who offer as much Glastonbury outfit inspiration as Alexa Chung. The It-girl has made a habit of attending the festival in effortless outfit formulas that just beg to be recreated.

From casual looks which incorporate button-down shirts and jeans, to outfits comprised of mini dresses and knee-high boots, every year Chung’s looks ooze festival cool.

Given Glastonbury is in the UK, of course, there will always be weather conditions to consider, so from a practical point of view, it is always best to pack a waterproof jacket and some Wellington boots. UK-based brand, Barbour, not only comes Alexa Chung approved, but also specialises in creating weather-proof jackets that will keep you dry should the heavens decide to open. Meanwhile, a pair of gumboots are your best bet for weatherproof footwear.

Without further ado, keep scrolling for some timeless ideas on how to create an effortless, understated Glastonbury wardrobe.

Understanding Converse Shoe Sizes: A Comprehensive Guide

Converse is a well-known brand that offers a wide range of shoes for different age groups and genders. Whether you’re a casual wearer or an athlete, Converse has something for everyone. However, when it comes to purchasing Converse shoes, one common issue that many people face is finding the right size. In this article, we aim to help you understand Converse shoe sizes and how to choose the right size for your feet.

The Importance of Proper Shoe Size

Having shoes that fit properly is essential for maintaining good foot health. Wearing shoes that are too tight or too loose can lead to a variety of foot problems, including blisters, calluses, and even long-term damage to your feet. It is, therefore, crucial to make sure you choose the right size when buying Converse shoes.

Understanding Converse Shoe Sizes

Converse shoes come in a range of sizes, including men’s, women’s, and children’s sizes. The sizes are based on the standard measurement system used by shoe manufacturers around the world. It is important to note that Converse shoes tend to run a half size larger than other brands. This means that if you typically wear a size 9 in other brands, you may need to purchase a size 8.5 in Converse shoes.

How to Measure Your Foot for Converse Shoes

Measuring your foot correctly is the first step in finding the right size for your Converse shoes. To measure your foot, you will need a blank piece of paper, a pencil, and a ruler. Simply follow these steps:

  1. Place the blank piece of paper on a flat surface.
  2. Stand on the paper with your heel against a wall.
  3. Mark the longest part of your foot on the paper with a pencil.
  4. Measure the distance between the wall and the mark you made with a ruler.
  5. Repeat the process for your other foot and compare the measurements to determine the larger foot.

Choosing the Right Converse Shoe Size

Once you have measured your feet, it is time to choose the right Converse shoe size. You can use the measurement you obtained to find your size on the Converse size chart. The chart provides a conversion of your foot measurement into Converse shoe sizes. It is important to remember that the size chart is just a guide and may vary slightly depending on the style of the shoe.

Tips for Buying Converse Shoes Online

If you’re purchasing Converse shoes online, there are a few things to keep in mind to ensure you choose the right size. Firstly, make sure you check the size chart provided by the retailer. Secondly, read reviews from other customers to see if the shoes run true to size or if they tend to run larger or smaller. Finally, if you’re in doubt, it is always best to go for the larger size, as you can always add an insole to make the shoe fit properly.

Conclusion

In conclusion, finding the right size for your Converse shoes is essential for maintaining good foot health. By understanding Converse shoe sizes, measuring your feet correctly, and using the size chart as a guide, you can find the perfect size for your feet. Remember to always read reviews and check the size chart when buying Converse shoes online, and if you’re in doubt, go for the larger size.

FAQs

  1. How do I know if my Converse shoes fit properly? A: Your Converse shoes should fit comfortably and not be too tight or too loose. There should also be enough room for your toes to move freely, but not so much that your foot slips out of the shoe.
  1. Is it okay to wear Converse shoes that are a little bit too big? A: It is not recommended to wear shoes that are too big, as this can lead to blisters and other foot problems. It is better to choose a size that fits properly, even if it is a bit tighter.
  2. Can I exchange my Converse shoes if they do not fit properly? A: Most retailers have a return or exchange policy, so if your Converse shoes do not fit properly, you can usually exchange them for a different size.
  3. Are Converse shoes true to size? A: Converse shoes tend to run a half size larger than other brands, so it is important to keep this in mind when choosing your size.
  4. Can I add an insole to make my Converse shoes fit better? A: Yes, adding an insole to your Converse shoes can help make them fit better. This is a good option if your shoes are slightly too big, but still, provide enough room for your feet to move freely.

A Step-by-Step Guide to Calming Redness on Your Face for Good

Whether it’s from general skin sensitivity, a specific reaction to a product or an underlying health issue, there are a myriad factors why your skin might turn red from time to time. “Rosacea, genetics, allergy to skincare ingredients, heat, sun exposure, alcohol, spicy food, acne, dryness or over-exfoliation” can all contribute to redness, says Dendy Engelman, M.D., a board-certified dermatologist in New York.

No matter the culprit, chronic redness is inflammation, which “causes tiny blood vessels to expand and push against the skin,” says Dr. Engelman. At its best, redness on your face can be annoying, but at its worst, it can be an indication of underlying health issues and a source of irritation, discomfort or insecurity. We asked industry experts and board-certified dermatologists to explain what causes facial redness as well as recommend tried-and-true products to reduce, calm and neutralize your facial redness for good.

What causes redness on the face?

In order to properly treat redness, first, you need to identify the culprit. To figure out why your skin is looking angry, “a visit to a dermatologist office is the best first step in addressing the issue and ruling out any hidden causes,” says Sabina Wizemann, a senior chemist in the GH Beauty Lab. That way, you’ll know that you’re getting to the root of the issue instead of treating the redness arbitrarily. Here are some common reasons your face might be red:

1. Acne

What it is: Pimples that become inflamed are the most common cause of acne redness. Inflammation causes blood vessels to expand and push against the skin, making the skin appear redder,” says Dr. Engelman. “Bacteria that live on the skin can also infect blocked follicles, causing deeper and more inflamed pimples, cysts and nodules.”

How to treat it: The sooner you can act on it with acne treatments, the better. “Salicylic acid or glycolic acid peels can help, as they promote cellular turnover to remove the top layers of the skin,” says Dr. Engelman. For example, Paula’s Choice Skin Perfecting 2% BHA Liquid is packed with salicylic acid to banish acne, smooth skin tone, and unclog and shrink large, congested pores. After the acne marks have faded, make sure to incorporate an oil-free hydrating cream, like Perricone MD Oil-Free Hydrating Cream, to protect acne-prone skin from drying out (which could potentially cause more redness) without causing more acne.

2. Dryness

What it is: Dry skin is often damaged and compromised, which means that “skin becomes vulnerable to infection from microorganisms, [leading] to sensitivity and redness,” says Dr. Engelman.

How to treat it: To stop dryness-related redness in its tracks, Dr. Engelman suggests that you “reinforce the skin barrier with moisture.” Look for face moisturizers with proven hydrating ingredients formulated especially for dry skin. “If you have any peeling or raw areas, apply petroleum jelly to those local areas to repair the skin,” says Joshua Zeichner, M.D., director of cosmetic and clinical research in dermatology at Mount Sinai Hospital. Good Housekeeping Seal star Aquaphor is formulated with smoothing panthenol and glycerin for a silky finish, and is clinically proven to restore healthy skin while decreasing dryness and irritation.

3. Rosacea

What it is: Rosacea is a chronic inflammatory skin condition that gives the face a flushed, red appearance that affects more than 14 million Americans.

How to treat it: Dr. Engelman recommends trying prescription-strength RHOFADE, “the first and only alpha1A adrenoceptor agonist approved for persistent facial erythema associated with rosacea in adults.” As with any medication, you’ll need to consult your doctor before beginning a new regimen. For OTC rosacea relief, Dr. Engelman recommends Cetaphil’s Redness Relieving products.

4. Seborrheic dermatitis

What it is: “Seborrheic dermatitis, also known as seborrheic eczema, is a chronic papulosquamous inflammatory skin problem that occurs mainly on the scalp and other areas that tend to be oily and have more sebaceous glands, like the head, face and torso,” says Dr. Engelman. “Seborrheic dermatitis causes redness and inflammation, patches of scaly skin, and dandruff.”

How to treat it: Seborrheic dermatitis can be treated a few ways, according to Michelle Henry, M.D., founder of Skin & Aesthetic Surgery of Manhattan. “Thoroughly cleanse the affected area of skin using a fragrance-free, gentle soap,” like Cetaphil Gentle Cleansing Bar. She adds, “a dermatologist may prescribe a topical anti-fungal agent to reduce Malassezia or mild topical corticosteroids to reduce inflammation or flare-up [or] over the counter, topicals containing zinc pyrithione.” Dr. Henry also suggests creams with shea butter to ease redness caused by seborrheic dermatitis.

5. Contact dermatitis

What it is: “Contact dermatitis occurs when something that touches the skin and irritates it or causes an allergic skin reaction,” says Dr. Henry. “It is difficult to treat symptoms such as redness until the cause of contact dermatitis has been identified.

How to treat it: “Protect against contact with irritants,” which potentially include fragrances and dyes, says Dr. Henry, and “use hypoallergenic creams, soaps and detergents.” Dr. Henry says in severe cases, a topical corticosteroid cream or “systemic corticosteroids such as oral prednisone” may be prescribed.

6. Atopic dermatitis or eczema

What it is: A chronic and itchy skin condition, “atopic dermatitis/eczema is often caused by a combination of genetic and environmental factors,” says Dr. Henry.

How to treat it: “The best treatment for redness caused by atopic dermatitis is to reduce contact with irritants and allergens. Dermatologists may also prescribe moisturizers or topical steroids,” Dr. Henry adds, suggesting “moisturizers containing ceramides, hyaluronic acid and glycerin are great ways to soothe the skin.”

You can also look for moisturizing products that contain niacinamide to soothe inflammation, says Dr. Zeichner. “Niacinamide is the ultimate multitasker in skincare. At the same time, it soothes inflammation, evens skin tone, and helps strengthen the skin. Hyaluronic acid can also be used to plump and hydrate,” he says. Dr. Engelman agrees: She suggests CeraVe Night Cream which is filled with both powerhouse ingredients. If over-the-counter fixes don’t stop the irritation, Dr. Henry says a dermatologist may prescribe antibiotics, antihistamines or immunosuppressive agents.

7. Over-exfoliation

What it is: “Over-exfoliation can cause micro-injuries to the dermis, which leads to redness in the short term,” says Dr. Engelman. “Consistent over-exfoliation also prevents the skin barrier from healing and inhibits its ability to protect the body and maintain hydration.”

How to treat it: First thing’s first: stop exfoliating immediately, says Dr. Engelman. “Allow your skin time to recover by avoiding harsh ingredients and techniques, and keeping your skin away from UV rays as much as possible. Instead, use soothing and reparative ingredients like epidermal growth factor (EGF), ceramides and peptides.”

8. Seasonal stressors

What it is: “Redness can appear … due to cold windy weather and dry indoor heat,” says Shannon Furginson, Manager of Training and Education at The Well, a wellness space and spa in New York. “These temperature changes can cause dry red patches on the skin.”

How to treat it:Skincare should be changed seasonally,” says Furginson. “Your moisturizer in the summer should be different from the one you use in the winter. The same is true for cleansers and serums.” Opt for thicker creams and more hydrating formulas in colder seasons, and lighter-weight picks in warmer ones.

How can you prevent facial redness from occurring?

“Over time, the capillaries can stay dilated and cause permanent redness,” says Dr. Engelman. Yikes. The best way to treat redness? Stopping it from happening in the first place. Here are some tips to sidestep irritation:

  • Figure out what environmental situations are negatively impacting your complexion. “Sunlight [and] strenuous activities can be irritating to the skin and can trigger flare-ups,” says Wizemann.
  • Avoid spicy foods, alcohol or coffee. Take notice of the way your skin reacts when you eat these common trigger foods. “Stay away from spicy foods for a night and eat more anti-inflammatory or cooling foods such as celery, squash or cucumbers,” suggests Furginson. “Choose vegetables first, any chance you get.”
  • Limit exposure to irritants. Dr. Engelman recommends steering clear of products that include peppermint, fragrance, parabens, tricolsan, formaldehyde, phthalates, sulfates, alcohol or witch hazel, which can be irritating and drying, especially to sensitive skin. Instead, “look for hydrating ingredients that will strengthen the skin barrier as well as provide a ‘shield’ from environmental stressors,” says Dr. Engelman. “Peptides, ceramides and hyaluronic acid will all help to build a barrier for the skin,” as well as “products with calming properties like niacinamide, rose oil, aloe and oatmeal.”
  • And of course, protect your skin with sunscreen. Dr. Engelman recommends starting each morning by layering on a tinted moisturizer with SPF: “Not only will it neutralize the appearance of redness, but it will also reduce the flaring that comes from sun exposure,” she says. “I recommend zinc-containing sunscreen,” says Dr. Zeichner. “Zinc both blocks UV light and has a skin protecting benefit: This is why zinc pastes are used on babies bottoms to prevent and treat diaper rash.”
preview for 5 Tips for Fall and Winter Skin Care

Is there a way to cure facial redness overnight?

Nope — our experts agree that facial redness often cannot be cured completely overnight. “Calming and repairing the skin barrier takes time, patience and effort, depending on the cause of redness,” says Dr. Engelman, who recommends using gentle products that are free of dyes, fragrances and other potential irritants while symptoms persist.

While there’s no way to “cure” redness instantly, “there are definitely ways to help ‘calm’ overnight,” says Furginson. “Using cold compresses, a cooling mask is helpful to bring redness down.” Dr. Engelman adds that skincare “ingredients like aloe, cucumber extract, ceramides, squalane and CBD calm skin and help reduce redness,” too.

When should you call a doctor?

“In some cases, over the counter products just aren’t enough,” says Dr. Zeichner. “If your redness or rash is not improving in 1-2 weeks, visit your dermatologist for professional advice and prescriptions that can help.”

ShoeperWoman’s eBay Shopping Guide: How to Shop on eBay without the risk

a guide to ebay shopping without the risk

I have a love-hate relationship with eBay. I’m a big fan of ebay shopping, which is a great way to track down that elusive item that sold out as soon as I decided to buy it, but I stopped trying to sell there long ago – back when I realised that people on eBay are all after something for (close to) nothing, and it was almost impossible to get a fair price for the items I tried to sell. (The items I try to BUY, meanwhile, always seem to go for way more than they’re worth: go figure.)

(Don’t even get me started on all of the sellers who steal my images, and who eBay refuse to deal with: grrr!)

Anyway, back on topic, I’ve been eBay shopping for many years now, but I know quite a few people who still worry about buying something there, so here’s my guide to eBay shopping, for anyone who needs it!

First things first: before I get onto the tips, I’m going to assume that you already know how the basics of how to use eBay (if you don’t, check out their own buying guide), and are here looking for tips on how to track down a bargain, as opposed to a tutorial on how to actually use the site. With that said, here are my tips on how to find great clothing on eBay…

Know your brands

One of the downsides of buying on eBay, as opposed to a regular store, is that if the item isn’t suitable, you normally can’t return it. There are some exceptions to this, of course, and some sellers do accept returns, but most don’t, so if you don’t like your item, too bad. To minimise the chances of this happening, I’d recommend sticking mostly to brands that you’re familiar with, and which you shop from regularly, so you’ll know more or less what to expect in terms of sizing and quality. It’s not a bargain if you can’t wear it, and you’ll have a much better chance of being happy with your purchase if you’re shopping from brands you have confidence in. It can be tempting to take a gamble on an amazing-looking item from a brand you’ve never heard of, but I’d only recommend doing that as long as you understand that it IS a gamble, and the price is low-enough that you don’t mind losing it if it doesn’t work out.

Never pay more than retail

In recent years, there’s been an ongoing trend of high-street clothing becoming super-popular and selling for WAY more than the item’s original retail price. Of course, something is only worth whatever people are willing to pay for it, and how much YOU’RE willing to pay for something is totally up to you. Speaking for myself, however, I never pay more than RRP for an eBay item – and even then, I’ll only pay that if the item is brand new with tags. Bidding significantly more than the ticket price may get you the item, but you’ll probably feel like you’ve been ripped off, so before you get into a bidding war, take a deep breath, be totally honest and ask yourself whether you want the item because you genuinely love it, or because it’s suddenly become the latest “must have” item.

a guide to ebay shopping without the risk

Bid late, and bid your maximum

Have you ever had something on your Watch List, and witnessed the price slowly inch up and up and newbie bidders (and sometimes established ones, too) turn up and keep increasing their bid by another £1, and then another, and then another? Infuriating, huh? This kind of behaviour is how bidding wars start, and while that’s great news for the seller, it’s not great news for the buyer, because it means that whoever wins the auction ends up paying more than they really needed to. It also means that the need to beat the person you’re bidding against sometimes becomes greater than the need to actually buy the item, so you end up paying far more than you intended to: a hollow victory, for sure. The best way to avoid this is to always bid late, and bid your maximum. In other words, decide what you’re willing to pay for the item (don’t forget to factor in the shipping costs) and bid that amount, as late as possible in the auction. If everyone did this, eBay items would sell for lower prices, and even if your bid wasn’t the winning one, at least you’d know you hadn’t been goaded into going over-budget.

Use a sniping tool

That’s all very well, of course, but what if you CAN’T bid late? What if you’re not online when the auction ends, or your internet connection drops out at the crucial moment? What if you just get an attack of the butterfingers, and someone sneaks in and steals your item while you’re still fumbling with your keyboard? These things happen, and, in the world of online auctions, there are few things more frustrating than being pipped at the post purely because of a technical glitch. Trust me on this. There is an easy answer to this, however, and it comes in the form of sniping tools: websites such as Auction Stealer or JustSnipe which automatically place your bid for you, in the last few seconds of the auction. On these sites, you simply register for an account, type in the details of the auction you’re bidding on, plus the maximum amount you’re willing to pay, then sit back and let the site place your bid for you. The advantage of these sites is that you can totally forget about the auction: no more constant refreshing of the page, no more bidding wars, no more frustrated attempts to get in your bid before the auction ends. Sniping, however, can be a controversial subject, and some people feel it’s a very unfair way to win an auction. It’s up to you to decide where you stand on that, obviously: personally my feeling is that as many of the sniping sites are free to use (or have free options), everyone has the same opportunity to use them if they wish. As I say, though, it’s up to you to decide where you stand on that one…

Make sure there are photos of the actual item you’re bidding on

Rather than taking their own photos of the item they’re selling, some sellers will simply use a stock photo from the retailer’s website, or a photo stolen from someone’s blog. Bidding on these auctions MIGHT work out just fine, but to minimise your risk, ask the seller for photos of the ACTUAL item they’re selling, so you know what you’re getting. Sure, that dress might look fantastic on Random Blogger Girl, but her dress isn’t the one you’re bidding on, and nor is the one in the product shot from the Zara website. When you’re buying from an online store, you can generally trust that they’ll send you an item which looks exactly like the one pictured. When you’re buying second hand clothing on eBay, however, you just don’t know what you’ll get: it could be stained, or torn, or have some other defect, and you won’t know until it lands on your doorstep. If all the seller has to offer, then, is stock photography taken from someone else’s website, it could be a good idea to avoid them, and place your bid with someone who’s taken the time to photograph the actual item you’re bidding on.

Ask for further evidence

Buying designer clothing on eBay is a subject that really deserves a post of its own because some designer items are notorious for being  easily and frequently faked. Spotting fakes is a complicated subject, and there are entire websites and articles devoted to helping you do it, so all I’ll say here is that unless you’re very sure the item you’re interested in is genuine, DON’T BID. There are lots of ways to verify the authenticity of an item. Some people spend hours and hours researching the brand they’re interesting in, until they can spot a fake a mile off. Others rely on looking at the seller’s feedback or asking questions to find out where they acquired the item and how they can prove it’s genuine. If you’re considering spending a lot of money (or even a little bit of money) on something, don’t be afraid to ask the seller to give you some proof that’s it’s real. The proof could take the form of a till receipt, a serial number, or something else, but if they have nothing to hide, they shouldn’t be offended you’ve asked, and should be able to give you some idea of the item’s provenance. Any reluctance to do this should be taken as a red flag, and I can’t say this often enough, but if you’re in any doubt at all, DON’T bid. Remember, till receipts and other so-called evidence CAN be faked, sand if you want to be 100% sure your item is genuine, sometimes the only way to get that peace of mind is to buy it from a source you can trust.

Check the seller’s feedback

This one is so obvious that it almost goes without saying, but you all know to check your seller’s feedback before making a bid, right? Right?!

A singleton's guide to Valentine's Day – Latest In Beauty Blog

Oh, Valentine’s Day; 14 February, just a casual Wednesday (hump day ?), single awareness day – whatever you want to call it, this highly commercialised day is fast approaching. If you’re not in a relationship, it doesn’t mean you can’t relish in all that this ‘day of romance’ has to offer. After all, instead of single as a status, we prefer the term ‘independently owned and operated’. When you really think about it, being single on Valentine’s Day is actually pretty great; self-love is a valid thing and so is learning the value of loving your own company. Let’s not beat around the bush, Valentine’s Day also gives you a justifiable reason to buy things. Lots of things.

If you’re looking for a way to occupy your time this Valentine’s Day, we’ve got some tried and tested tips to having a truly desirable evening from the comfort of your own sofa. Side note: If you’re planning on throwing an anti-valentine’s party, then simply indulge in some pre-event self-love and pampering, but don’t forget to send us an invite. We’ll be waiting…

SINGLE? NO BIG DEAL.

  • Pizza is your Valentine and will always be there for you. That’s what we tell ourselves anyway. If there’s one thing Valentine’s Day allows (without the guilt), it’s ordering take out. Go wild, ladies.
  • Gordon, Ben and Jerry: the only three men you could possibly need on the ‘most romantic night’ of the year. Pour yourself an XL glass of gin and tonic and grab a large spoon for some much-needed ice cream action. Oh, and you’ll be glad to hear that portion control is totes not a thing on Valentine’s Day…
  • Forget pity party, it’s all about the pamper party. It may sound cliché, but a good pampering sesh is something that never fails us. We’re talking the whole shebang; a long soak in the bath, face mask, hair mask, foot soak, mani/pedi – and if you really want to treat yourself, request a masseuse to pop over for an at-home treatment. Thankfully, that’s a thing now.

  • Kick back with your celebrity crush. OK, so you might not be able to physically achieve this (we often dream of Colin Firth appearing on the sofa, alas it never happens) but a movie is a great way to enjoy the evening, especially if your celeb crush is the lead…

The Shy Girl’s Guide to Socialising (without the awkwardness)

When you’re shy, socialising can seem more like a trial than a pleasure: but it doesn’t have to be that way. Here are some ways to survive social occasions – even when you’re super-shy…

the shy girl's guide to socialising

01. SMILE!

I’d always assumed my shyness was obvious to other people – until one day a colleague confided that, until she’d really gotten to know me, she’d assumed I was “snobby” and unapproachable. I was, of course, horrified by this, but when I really thought about it, I had to admit that it wasn’t the first time I’d heard myself described using those particular words. Since then, I’ve noticed the same thing in other people: people I’ve thought were incredibly rude when I first met them, only to completely reverse that opinion a few weeks later, when I’d gotten to know them and realised they’re actually just very shy. Unfortunately for us shy girls, shyness CAN come across as rudeness or stand-offishness – and once you’ve given people that first impression, it can be really hard to change it.

One easy way around this is to smile: not in a manic, gritted-teeth kind of way, I hasten to add – that won’t work either. But if you can smile in a genuine way, it will make you look more approachable and friendly  – even if you don’t really feel it. Whatever you do, don’t just stand scowling in a corner: I know quite a few shy people who do this without even realising they’re doing it (I’m prone to doing it myself, in fact, due to my chronic case of Resting Bitchface…) – all it does it make other people reluctant to speak to them, which makes the shy person feel even more isolated and awkward. A smile goes a long way!

02. GET INTO THE CONVERSATION EARLY

As a shy girl amongst extroverts, I often find it quite difficult to get a foothold in group conversations, and will often end up standing silently at the edge of the group, feeling more and more awkward as time goes on, and I’ve still failed to make a single comment. What I’ve found, however, is that the best way to avoid this is to get into the conversation as early as possible: it doesn’t really matter what you say, just as long as you speak up, and do it quickly: the longer you wait, the harder it’ll be. Not sure what to say, though? Don’t worry…

03. ASK QUESTIONS

One thing I’ve learned over the years is that most people love talking about themselves – and if you ask the right questions, they’ll walk away from the conversation thinking you’ve just had an amazing chat: without realising that, actually, they did all the talking, while you just listened. Go for open questions here, like, “What have you been up to lately?” or the tried and tested, “What do you do?” (Follow up: “Do you enjoy it?” or “What’s that like?”) Avoid questions which will elicit a yes/no answer, and just effectively pass the conversational baton right back to you: your goal is to give the person you’re talking to something to talk ABOUT.

04.  BE PREPARED

In following the tip above, it’s a good idea to come prepared: both in the sense of having some questions in mind to ask other people, and in preparing some anecdotes of your own, should someone turn the question back on YOU. I don’t mean by this that you should learn these questions/anecdotes off by heart, obviously, because that’ll just make things even more awkward than you could ever have imagined. It can be a good idea, however, to have a quick think about things you’ve done lately that might be of interest, or to work out what you’ll say to those commonly-asked questions – especially ones you might find difficult. I, for instance, always find it a bit awkward when people ask me what I do for a living, because not many people in “real” life know what blogging is – and those who do will often have a rather negative opinion of it, which will make the ensuing conversation feel difficult to me. If I know I’m likely to be asked that question, then, I’ll try to work out how to answer it in advance (“I run a few fashion and lifestyle websites…”), in a way that makes my job seem more “normal”. (On the other hand, if you do have an unusual job, and you’re happy to talk about it, it can be a GREAT conversation starter!)

05. DON’T RELY ON ALCOHOL

I’ve always been exceptionally shy – until I’ve had a few glasses of wine, at which point I’ll become the life and soul of the party. As tempting as it is to see this as an easy route to social self-confidence, however, it’s a really bad idea: and normally means I’ll wake up the next morning feeling a) hungover and b) absolutely mortified by the memory of the stupid things I said while I was tipsy. These days, while I still enjoy a glass of wine or two, I make sure I don’t drink enough to feel drunk, or to make a fool of myself – and I feel all the better for it.

Any other shy girls out there? How do you cope with social events?
