Easy at-home exercise routine – Latest In Beauty Blog

If you ask anyone about their 2018 New Year resolutions, there’s a high chance that upping their exercise game is on the list, and before your eyes roll back into your head, hear us out…

Joining a gym isn’t always necessarily the answer as exercise can quickly feel like an expensive chore, therefore we have put together a few at-home exercises that can be done anytime, anywhere. We’re hoping these will help us all to stay energised and keep up the fitness resolution throughout and beyond January.

It is always important to start with at least a 5-minute warm up to work on your muscles while increasing your heart rate. If you own a skipping rope, this is a fantastic way to warm-up. If you don’t, don’t worry, but should you want to buy one you can do so cheaply. A few examples here.

Skipping warm-up

– 2 minutes – Low-intensity skip
– 20 seconds – High-intensity (high knees, faster pace) / 10 seconds low-intensity skipping
– 20 seconds- High-intensity (high knees, faster pace) / 10 seconds low-intensity skipping
– 20 seconds- High-intensity (high knees, faster pace) / 10 seconds low-intensity skipping
– 30 seconds – Rest
– 1 minute – Low-intensity skipping

Standard warm-up

60 seconds – March on the spot (stand with your feet shoulder-width apart and lift your left leg up to your chest then back to the floor, followed by your right leg. Repeat for 60 seconds)

60 seconds – Walk outs (stand with your feet shoulder-width apart. Bend at the hips and plant your hands on the floor, shoulder-width apart, a couple of inches in front of your feet. Walk your hands forward until your body is in a push up position. Now reverse the movement and return to standing)

60 seconds – Jumping jacks (Stand with your feet together and your hands at your sides. Simultaneously raise your arms above your head and jump up just enough to spread your feet out wide. Quickly reverse the movement and repeat.)

60 seconds – Alternate lunges with rotation (Stand with your feet hip-width apart. Step forward with one foot and slowly lower your body into a lunge. Your front knee should be bent at 90 degrees and your rear knee should be a few inches off the floor. As you lunge, rotate your upper body toward your lead leg. Rotate from your upper back—not your lower back. Pause, and return to the starting position. Now repeat with the other leg leading and repeat).

30 seconds – Double arm rotation forwards (Stand with feet shoulder width apart and arms by your side. Swing both arms simultaneously forwards as if drawing a circle with each arm).

30 seconds – Double arm rotation backwards (Stand with feet shoulder width apart and arms by your side. Swing both arms simultaneously backwards as if drawing a circle with each arm).

Now that you’re all warmed up, you’re ready to tackle the at-home HIIT (High Intensity Interval Training) burner. HIIT combines quick bursts of exercise with recovery periods, and the reason for its popularity? The results proven from short explosive exercise are great! This also means the added bonus of shorter exercise sessions (see, it’s not all bad…)

HIIT raises the heartrate very quickly, providing you are putting 100% effort into the burst of exercise. It is essential that you work as hard as you possibly can during the intervals and take the rest in-between to reap the rewards. The key to success is to make sure that you do every set properly and that every rep is precise; go for technique on your first few rounds and then build up to speed.

Home workout

There are a total of six exercises and you have four rounds to complete them, with 30-40 seconds in-between each round (so the recovery after exercise six is always longer).

Round 1 – 20 second interval and 20 second recovery
Round 2 – 30 second interval and 20 second recovery
Round 3 – 40 second interval and 20 second recovery
Round 4 – 20 second interval with 20 second recovery

1-Squat with knee lift II

Exercise 1: Squat with knee lift

Stand with your feet shoulder-width apart and drop into a squat. Keep you back straight and make sure your legs are bent at 90 degrees. Power back up and bring your right knee up to meet your left elbow, then back into a squat and back up with a left knee up. That’s one rep.

1-Squat with knee lift IV

Exercise 2: Burpee

Stand with your feet about twice shoulder-width and your arms hanging naturally by your sides. Push your hips back, bend your knees, and lower your body into a sumo squat until you can place both hands on the floor between your feet. Jump or walk your legs back so you’re in a push up position. Quickly pull your legs back into a sumo squat and then stand up. That’s one rep.

3-Bicycle Crunch copy

Exercise 3: Bicycle crunch

Lie on your back and bring your hands up to your temples. Crunching your abs, bring your left knee in towards your waist while simultaneously bringing your right elbow in to meet it, then swap sides. It should be a fluid motion, as if you were riding a bike. To challenge yourself you can speed the movement up and slow it down.

4-Glute Bridge III

Exercise 4: Glute bridge

Lie on your back with your knees bent and arms out to the sides. Lift your hips off the mat so your back, hips and thighs are in a line. Remember to keep your glutes and core engaged. Then lower your hips to the floor. Repeat the motion.

Exercise 5: Butt kicks into high knees

Stand with your feet shoulder-width apart. Kick your feet up behind you one at a time until the heel touches the glutes and pump your arms at the same time. Repeat 10 butt kicks and then swap to 10 high knees, raising your knees in front of your chest and pumping your arms.

6-Plank I

Exercise 6: Plank

A plank is simple but effective if you are in the right position! Assume a push up position, but bend your elbows and rest your forearms on the floor. Your body should form a straight line from your head to your ankles. Now tighten your core and remember to breathe.

Some food for thought before we finish; it will make it much easier to stick to a healthier way of life if you remember to get plenty of rest and drink at least two litres of water each day. It is also good to remember that getting fit and staying healthy is as much what you put into your body as the exercise you take, so remember to make better choices this January to really reap the rewards of your New Year’s resolution!

Working out is sweaty business, so why not add Soft & Gentle’s new Aluminium Roll On Anti-Perspirant or Dandi Patch to your box this month?

Smoothie your way to glowing skin – Latest In Beauty Blog

Though skincare lotions and potions are certainly beneficial to our skin (gosh, we wouldn’t be without ‘em) the real power and secret to good, glowing skin comes from what we put into our bodies. In addition to drinking lots of water to remain hydrated inside and out, a smoothie is a great way to give your body an extra boost of nutrients. Today, we’ve decided to share one of our favourite smoothie combinations, which helped us on our journey to happy, healthy skin. If you’ve got a blender, access to a supermarket and an open mind, you’re good to go…

What you need

avocadoAvocado (one half)

Love it or loathe it, don’t dismiss this millennial fave (even if you really hate it, you won’t taste it). Rich in vitamin E, this powerful antioxidant steals the show when it comes to that much-coveted glow, while its high content of vitamin C supports moisture levels for optimum hydration.

bananaBanana (one, peeled and chopped)

Not only is banana really good for your health, it’s pretty darn fab for your skin, too. This humble fruit is rich in anti-oxidants and can help to nourish dry skin, as well as smoothening ageing skin.

bluberryBlueberries (one cupful)

Oh, the modest, yet very delicious blueberry. Offering antioxidants, vitamin C and iron in abundance, blueberries are very fond of fighting free radicals, which is good for us when such nasties attack the skin and contribute to premature skin ageing.

mangoMango (one cupful, chopped)

Not only is this nutrient-dense fruit extremely tasty, mango is rich in beta-carotene and vitamin A, which can help enrich skin health; protecting the skin from UV rays, reducing oil production and fine lines and encouraging a rosy glow in the skin.

spinachSpinach (as much as you desire)

Basically, the key to great skin is spinach, and lots of it. Regular consumption is great for improving the look of your skin and minimising dark circles, while the high iron content promotes a natural glow. Give skin an extra boost with Sukin’s Super Greens Clay Masque.

ojFresh OJ (half cup)

Adding a little bit of vitamin C to your smoothie will enhance absorption of iron from the spinach. Plus, it’s super tasty and helps everything blend well together. An extra shot of vitamin C will always go down well with your skin, so how about adding Ooh-arr’s Rosie Glow Mask to your next box?

coconutA splash of coconut water

Now, you could solely opt for coconut water (or even almond milk) instead of the OJ, but we still like to add a splash of the coco-nutty goodness for an extra shot of hydration.

chiaChia seeds (just a sprinkling)

Because, why not? These seeds are the cherry on top when on the path to glowing skin; they’ll help reduce inflammation and dryness while encouraging a plumper look to the skin.

Drinking smoothies is thirsty work, so why not browse our latest arrivals while you relax?

New Year beauty resolutions you can stick to! – Latest In Beauty Blog

The time has come to make (and vow to stick to) our New Year resolutions. New Year, new you? Yes, we’ve heard it all before. January is the month of making many promises to ourselves, that, let’s be honest, usually end up being broken after the first week is out, BUT ladies, hear us out; this year we’re going to stick to them! Yes, that’s right, you heard it here first – we can’t go back on our word now. For 2018, team LiB are binning the usual ‘to exercise more’, ‘to shed a few pounds’ and ‘to eat less cake’ (that was never going to work) for simple, achievable beauty resolutions we’ll actually want to keep. Should be easy…. Right?

BEAUTY RESOLUTIONS: YOU HEARD IT HERE FIRST

Harriet, Account Manager –  “To stop biting my nails – RANK!

Jemma, Editor & Social Media Manager – To wash my makeup brushes weekly because I can’t remember the last time I washed them – I’m gross

Ciara, Graphic Designer – To stop squeezing my spots – It’s a terrible habit

Charlotte, Commercial & Partnerships Director – To give my skin a bit more TLC…e.g. do a face mask or a deep cleanse more regularly than I currently do.

Christina, Sales Director – To learn how to apply eyeshadow!

Emma, Marketing Director – My beauty resolution is to spend more time looking after my skin: I need to stick to a proper regime with good skincare products, do twice-weekly face masks, and I plan to go for monthly facials (starting with Teresa Tarmey in January).  Roll on a glowy, makeup-free 2018!”

Nort, CEO – To use my moisturiser every day – I promise!

Jess, Junior Account Manager – To get into the habit of using primer more so my make-up stays on for longer!”

Iza, Digital Project Manager – Wash my makeup brushes because I don’t do it as often as I should and review all my makeup products/cosmetics, because I haven’t done it for long time now, so I think some will definitely need to be thrown away ?

Shivona, Customer Service Manager – My New Year beauty resolutions include drinking more water, especially at work! My skin gets quite dry and dehydrated because I don’t drink enough water – so this would be first on my list! I also need to declutter my makeup box – throw away any expired products and invest in more natural skincare/make-up products.

Sasha, Junior Business Development Manager – Stop picking my spots! and make sure to wash my makeup off!

Made a resolution to streamline or expand your beauty collection? Why not build your own beauty box?

Blogger of the Month: Albertine Sarah – Latest In Beauty Blog

Here at Latest in Beauty, we love blogs and thoroughly enjoy looking through all of your fab posts, photos and feedback on our Build-Your-Own beauty boxes. The pool of LiB lovers continues to grow and that’s down to you lovely lot and our collective of beauty bloggers sharing the love and discussing product they’ve discovered through LiB. It’s so exciting when some of our favourite bloggers and influencers share their must-have Latest in Beauty discoveries, therefore each month we like to chat to one of them right here on the blog. We’d like to introduce you to the first Blogger of the Month for 2018; the gorgeous Albertine from Albertine Sarah (previously known as Dippy Writes).

Q

What’s hot on the blog right now?

A

At the moment it’s all about beauty boxes, of all shapes and sizes, and getting more bang for my reader’s bucks! My most read posts are currently about the Soap and Glory Spa of Wonder box and the Latest in Beauty x The Greatest Showman box. Both are great value for money and include amazing products, so I’m guessing that’s why people are so drawn to those posts in particular.

Q

What’s in your makeup bag for Winter?

A

A heavy-duty lip balm (either Dr Lipp or NUXE Reve De Meil), a lip scrub (Lush do great ones), a face mist (Jurlique are my faves for this) and a matte red lipstick (Stila Stay All Day liquid lipsticks are THE best)! Basically, I’m all about keeping my skin hydrated and my lips soft in the winter. And a red lip can fix anything and immediately make me feel put together.

Q

Favourite discovery from your latest LiB box?

A

It has to be the Miller Harris Rose Silence Eau de Parfum sample included in the collaborative box with The Greatest Showman. I’ve fallen head over heels for the heady rose scent and I’m planning to buy myself the biggest bottle I can once I’ve used up my sample! I’m not normally a fan of perfume samples in beauty boxes, but this one was a generous size so I could really get a feel for the fragrance before deciding to buy full-sized.

Q

What’s your favourite thing about blogging?

A

The community, hands down. I’ve met so many lovely people through blogging, and I’ve made some really great friends. Everyone is supportive and helpful, and it’s nice having people I can talk so candidly to about my blog content and how I’m working with brands. I don’t think I would enjoy blogging nearly as much as I do without the community that comes with it.

A

SEO – I just find it so boring but it really is necessary for attracting new readers! Adding no-follow links, keywords, image tags etc. can sometimes take me longer than it does to actually write the blog post and I find it really tedious! That said, it definitely has helped my blog to grow, so it’s worth doing.

Q

What’s your signature scent?

A

Ooh that’s a tricky one for me because I do love to test out new fragrances. But right now it’s Elie Saab Girl of Now which is a delicious gourmand scent.

Q

The blogger/YouTuber made me buy it:

A

Liz Earle Cleanse and Polish, and I am eternally grateful for the recommendation because I now can’t live without it!

Q

Beauty hacks, have you got any?

A

If you’ve got annoyingly shaky hands (like me) and struggle to get a sharp winged liner line, then medical tape is your friend. I place it following my natural lower lash line and use it to get a super sharp winged liner line. Once you’re done applying liner you just peel the tape off and go – It’s practically foolproof!

A

Oh gosh, luckily I don’t think I have many of these but I definitely get lazy with my skincare routine when I’m really busy, and it definitely shows when I do! I used to be an avid face wipe user but luckily I’ve grown out of that habit and my skin is eternally grateful.

Q

If you could curate your own beauty box, what would it contain and why?

A

This is tricky, but it would have to be a collection of the products I recommend time and time again to my blog readers, friends and family:

Liz Earle Cleanse and Polish
Jurlique Rosewater Balancing Mist
NUXE Reve De Meil lip balm
Smashbox Photo Finish Primer
Beautyblender classic sponge
Bobbi Brown Smokey Eye mascara
Stila Stay All Day Liquid Eyeliner
Max Factor Colour Elixir Honey Lacquer Lipgloss in Honey Nude

Check out Albertine’s blog and get all the inspiration from her latest selections before creating your own box! Don’t forget to share the love using #LoveLiB!

Did someone say detox? – Latest In Beauty Blog

If you’re anything like us, Christmas was all about overindulging (cheese board every single day? Guilty) – it’s inevitable and something we shouldn’t feel too bad about, because, well, that’s just the joy of the festive season. With that being said, as January rears its ‘back to reality’ head, it’s common to feel the need to embrace a detox – whether that be a full-blown lifestyle overhaul (Veganuary anyone?) or small changes to help you look and feel your best again. Here at LiB, we’re sharing with you some of our simple and easy tips for a January detox, focusing on cleansing inside and out.

DETOX BODY

An obvious but necessary one? Yes, you guessed it – drink more water. Six to eight glasses a day is recommended for optimum hydration levels and the flushing out of toxins. We suggest getting yourself a super cool water bottle for keeping on your desk, allowing you to monitor how much you’re drinking throughout the day. This one is great for your skin too, because what you put inside really does affect the outside.

Cut down your caffeine and alcohol intake. Wait, hear us out. Before you drive yourself crazy with the thought, we’re definitely not saying you have to go teetotal; cutting down on stimulants slowly is a more effective way for maintaining your detox without the symptoms that come with avoiding them entirely. How about starting your day with hot water and fresh lemon? Similarly, herbal tea is a great alternative, or if you really can’t break away from your morning coffee, opt for decaf instead.

Choose one ‘naughty’ thing to eliminate. Cutting out one specific thing is much more manageable and realistic than banning the entirety of your guilty food pleasures. We’re avoiding processed foods, starting with biscuits. This makes elevenses a struggle, but you’ve got to do what you’ve got to do…

Move more. So, we’ve pledged to go to the gym more than once this year (even that would be an improvement on last year) but if that’s not within your means, simply make an effort to move more. That could be as simple as going for a walk on your lunch break, or doing 20 star jumps in the office every day (much to the amusement of your colleagues, of course).

Getting enough sleep. Yes, that means putting down the phone in good time before hitting the hay. A bath using Lavender Epsom Salt can work wonders at detoxing both body and mind while improving the quality of your sleep. This isn’t just an old wives’ tale either, we’re talking real therapeutic benefits here, ladies – try it for yourself!

DETOX SKIN

In the words of Blu Cantrell, we need to let it breathe. We’re not going to lie, the amount of makeup that’s sat on our face over the festive period is akin to the contents of a cement mixer; thick and heavy – but may we add, flawless? The benefits of giving your skin a break is second to none, and no makeup days will allow your skin to breathe, ensuring the efficacy of subsequent skincare steps. If you’re sat in horror at the thought of temporarily parting ways with your foundation, try a light tinted moisturiser, BB or CC cream.

✖️ Start with the inside. As we’ve previously mentioned, what goes inside really does affect the outside. For a total skin detox, ideally you should adapt your diet according to your skincare goals. Processed foods, dairy and refined sugar all contribute to the clogging of pores, therefore opting for alkaline-rich fruits and vegetables, as well as healthy fats like avocados and nuts, keep skin flawless and glowing from the inside out.

Invest in the double cleanse. OK, we know that sometimes it’s hard enough to wash your face once, but doing it twice really ups your game. The first cleanse should always target the removal of makeup products, while the second – and most vital – allows your cleanser to reach and clean deep into the pores. Double cleansing is especially beneficial to those of us living in big cities, to first remove the pollution and daily grime, then to properly clean.

Give skin supplements a try – no really, give them a whirl. Want to reset your biological clock while giving your skin a good seeing to? An anti-ageing marine collagen drinkable liquid supplement is just what the skin doctor ordered. This one by Absolute Collagen is one of our favourites and works from the inside out to hydrate and plump the skin for fewer lines and wrinkles. It’s the year to be the best version of you, naturally. Add it to your next box!

Discover the wonder ingredient that is charcoal. This detoxifying ingredient works to draw out impurities from the skin, great for skin that is acting up after too many late nights and parties. Products harnessing charcoal control oil while working to tighten pores, thus improving the overall look of your skin.

Detox your beauty regime by browsing our build your own beauty box selection!
