Cleansing is the first and most important step in your skincare routine. So it’s important to pick the right cleanser that suits your skin type. While all facial cleansers ultimately do the same thing for your skin; getting rid of dirt, dead skin cells and makeup, each one can offer various benefits.
When picking a cleanser, it’s essential to use a cleanser that suits your skin type. Follow our tips below to help you choose the right cleanser for your skin type.
For sensitive skin
If you have sensitive or irritated skin, go for a cleanser that gently cleanses your skin and doesn’t aggravate your skin barrier.
Try a cleanser like our Haul of Fame bareMinerals’ Pureness Gel Cleanser. This cleanser is formulated with only 15 ingredients and is ideal for sensitive skin. This nourishing cleanser soothes sensitive skin while effectively removing makeup and impurities without stripping the skin.
For oily skin
Those with oily skin should opt for cleansers, such as gel cleansers, that help purify the skin and regulate sebum production. If you have an oily complexion, choose a cleanser that will help tackle excessive shine or greasiness. Be careful of using cleansers that overly strip your skin of its natural oils as this can do more harm than good.
Oily skin types are also more prone to breakouts so if you have acne-prone skin, use a salicylic acid-based cleanser daily to help unclog pores and get rid of excess oil.
For dry skin
For dry skin, choose a cream cleanser packed with nourishing and moisturising ingredients. Cream cleansers gently cleanse your skin and leave your skin moisturised. It’s best to avoid cleansers that strip or dry out your skin as this could lead to dry, flaky or irritated skin.
To find the best face serum for you,”choose a formula that is appropriate for your skin type and texture, as well as the outcomes you want to achieve,” Dr. Mitchell advises. Here are the GH Beauty Lab and dermatologists’ general guidelines:
✔️For glowing skin: Seek out brightening and exfoliating ingredients like vitamin C, niacinamide and glycolic acid. “Vitamin C is a great option for those looking for more luminous skin and can reduce the appearance of uneven skin tone and hyperpigmentation,” Dr. Zenovia says.
✔️For dry skin: Ingredients like hyaluronic acid, vitamin E and ceramides are great “hydrating components that absorb easily into skin,” Dr. Mitchell says. Squalane is another effective hydrator, adds Dhaval G. Bhanusali, M.D., dermatologist and founder of Hudson Dermatology and Laser Surgery in New York City.
✔️For anti-aging and wrinkles: Dermatologist go-to’s for smoothing lines and reducing age spots include retinol, peptides and glycolic acid. “Bakuchiol is a newer ingredient that also can provide benefit and is generally well-tolerated,” Dr. Bhanusali says. In addition, “antioxidants, including vitamins (C, E, and B3 or niacinamide), polyphenols, and flavonoids, slow the breakdown of collagen by lowering the concentration of free radicals in your skin,” Dr. Mitchell notes.
✔️For sensitive skin: Choose serums made without fragrance, which can irritate. Opt for those made with hydrating ingredients (hyaluronic acid, vitamin E, ceramides) “to repair the skin’s barrier,” Dr. Zenovia says, and/or soothers such as oat extracts, aloe, green tea and chamomile.
✔️For oily skin: Dr. Bhanusali recommends the active ingredients salicylic acid and niacinamide, which can help reduce excess oil.
✔️For acne-prone skin: “Salicylic acid and glycolic acid can help clear pores” and minimize breakouts, Dr. Mitchell says.
Jennifer Grey reveals the super affordable moisturizer she swears by.
The Dirty Dancing star loves the Embryolisse Lait-Crème Concentré and says it “smells yummy.”
“It’s super inexpensive, and I love that.”
Jennifer Grey has had shining skin since her Dirty Dancing days. She’s been open about her experience with plastic surgery in the past, and how she navigated her hair loss journey. Now, she’s spilling the secret to her hydrated, glowing skin. The 62-year-old tells Prevention that she loves Embryolisse’s Lait-Crème Concentré.

“I really like the Embryolisse moisturizer, it’s super inexpensive and I love that,” Grey tells Prevention. “It’s one of those things that you can use to clean your face and moisturize it, and it smells yummy.”
The product is full of skin-loving ingredients, including shea butter, beeswax, soy proteins, and aloe vera—which reviewers claim make this moisturizer ideal for sensitive skin. “Its formula not only restores moisture in the skin barrier but also diminishes the appearance of fine lines without leaving traces of grease,” according to the brand.
More From Good Housekeeping
Plus, the brand swears its benefits work for more than just hydrating skin—it’s both a soothing after-sun product and aftershave care.
While it’s known as a French drugstore favorite around the world, it’s still super affordable to try for yourself in the U.S.
With over 18,000 ratings and nearly five stars, Amazon reviewers love the product, too. One Amazon customer raves, “I absolutely LOVE this product! I have dry, sensitive acne-prone skin as well as eczema, which makes it extremely difficult to find a product that truly works for me and my skin. This product truly is the best of both worlds. It has the perfect thickness and texture, absorbs nicely into the skin, and leaves a beautiful finish.”
Another reviewer was impressed with its suitability for sensitive skin, as well as its multi-purpose formula. “I have really sensitive combination skin. And I mean, really sensitive. This doesn’t clog my pores, works as a primer, a night cream, a daily moisturizer, and even does the trick right now for winter.”
As for some of Grey’s other beauty favorites, she’s an ambassador for the haircare brand Harklinikken. Her go-tos are designed for optimal hair health, especially for those who are experiencing hair thinning or hair loss. You can shop a few of her favorites below.

You may have heard of antioxidants in your food — but they’re also a key part of an effective skincare routine for any skin type. Antioxidants, like vitamin C and resveratrol, play a crucial role in just how healthy, radiant and youthful your face looks both now and over time. “Every day, we are exposed to environmental factors that create free radicals in our skin, like pollution and ultraviolet rays,” explains Kavita Mariwalla, M.D., a dermatologist in West Islip, New York.
That’s where antioxidants, both in the form of ingested nutrients and in topical skincare products like face serums, come in. Applying skincare made with antioxidants an help neutralize the damaging effects of free radicals, says Dendy Engelman, M.D., a dermatologist in New York City — and, over time, help prevent and repair signs of skin aging, including hyperpigmentation, lines and wrinkles, inflammation and dullness.
In the Good Housekeeping Institute Beauty Lab, our scientists have a long history of testing face serums, including antioxidant and anti-aging serums, using scientific instruments to measure changes in skin over the time period of product use. Consumer testers also evaluate formulas on factors like the appearance of their skin before and after use, plus the product’s ease of use and cosmetic attributes. This data is then collated to find the best serums, including those with antioxidant properties.
Our top picks:
Not all antioxidant serums are created equal — some have bonus benefits like wrinkle smoothing, brightening, calming and more, depending on your skin type and needs. Here, read all about the best antioxidant serums you can buy and their benefits, including GH Beauty Lab top-tested formulas and Good Housekeeping Seal star picks, plus more on the top ingredients to look for.

How we test antioxidant serums
To determine the best serums, including those with antioxidants, GH Beauty Lab scientists first label-mask the products to eliminate bias, then distribute them to dozens of consumer testers, who use the formulas in their daily routines over a set time period between four and twelve weeks. In the Lab, analysts use the Visia Complexion Analyzer device to track changes in skin during the product’s use, including hyperpigmentation, lines and wrinkles, and pores.
When applicable, the Cutometer machine (below), which gauges skin laxity, is used to measure changes in firmness. Testers also report their feedback on skin’s look and feel during and after use, perceived changes in skin, and product attributes such as ease of use, scent, texture and absorption. Hundreds of data points are then tallied to find the best serums to target specific skincare issues.
What to look for when shopping for the best antioxidant serum
Although many ingredients are touted for their antioxidant effects, these are the most proven effective actives to seek out in face serums, according to Dr. Mariwalla:
✔️ Vitamin C, also known as ascorbic acid, known for reducing hyperpigmentation and evening skin tone. It’s the gold standard of antioxidants and is best for combination or dry skin, but steer clear if you’re oily or acne-prone, says Dr. Mariwalla, since “vitamin C does make some people break out.” ✔️Niacinamide, a form of vitamin B3, has added benefits including brightening, minimizing wrinkles, and strengthening the skin barrier to lessen dryness and irritation. It’s generally well-tolerated by combination, dry and sensitive skin types, and is also great for acne-prone or oily skin as well. ✔️Resveratrol, a polyphenol found in the skin of red grapes that has anti-aging effects, boosting firmness and smoothing. It’s great for combination, dry or sensitive skin. ✔️Vitamin E, also known as tocopherol, which can soothe skin, making it ideal for combination, dry or sensitive skin. ✔️Retinol, a vitamin A derivative, also a wrinkle smoothing and skin tone-evening active. Dr. Mariwalla recommends sticking with retinol if you’re acne- or oil-prone. ✔️Green tea, a botanical that has anti-inflammatory effects, is best for combination, dry or sensitive skin.
What are the benefits of an antioxidant serum?
Antioxidant serums protect skin from damaging free radicals, helping prevent and repair signs of aging. “A free radical is a molecule with an unpaired electron, which means it is unstable and highly reactive,” says Dr. Mariwalla. “Free radicals on the skin are unstable atoms and as such are always seeking that extra electron from other cells to become stable,” she explains. “Once a free radical takes an electron from another molecule, that molecule becomes a free radical, setting off a chain reaction resulting in oxidative stress, which breaks down skin’s collagen and results in wrinkling and a sallow appearance. As these accumulate, the body is affected in the form of illness and accelerated aging.”
Like skin superheroes, antioxidants bind to free radicals and donate their electrons, stopping free radicals from stealing electrons from skin cells and causing damage. Over time, reduced free radical damage means less lines and wrinkles, hyperpigmentation and inflammation, which can lead to smoother and brighter skin.
When should you starting using an antioxidant serum?
Everyone’s skin is constantly exposed to free radicals, so an antioxidant serum can be beneficial at nearly any age, starting in the 20s. To incorporate an antioxidant serum into your skincare routine, apply it as your first step after washing your face in the morning, evening or both, “that way it [sits] directly on your skin,” Dr. Mariwalla advises.
If you choose to use your serum once daily, opt for the morning, since during the day skin is more exposed to environmental factors like UV light that can cause free radical damage. Note that antioxidant serums should be used in addition to a broad-spectrum face sunscreen, not in place of one.

The most important step of your skin care routine is the first step, which is cleansing. Cleansing is an essential step as it helps get rid of dirt, sebum, makeup and impurities that could potentially clog the pores. Cleansing your skin may sound like the simplest step in your regimen, but there are steps to follow to ensure you’re doing it properly.
Read on to learn our top tips to help you master your cleansing routine.
Wash Your Hands
As obvious as it may seem, making sure you start your cleansing routine with clean hands is key to prevent spreading bacteria onto your skin, which could lead to skin irritations or acne.
Use lukewarm water
Never use hot water to wash your face. Hot water strips your skin of its natural oils and can cause skin dryness. Instead, use cold or lukewarm water when cleansing your skin to avoid irritating your skin barrier.
Follow the 60 second rule
When it comes to cleansing, ensure that you spend at least 60 seconds to properly cleanse your skin. This allows you enough time to get rid of all traces of dirt, sebum, makeup or sunscreen. You can follow this rule with any cleanser of your choice.
For daily cleansing, you can opt for our Haul of Fame BYBI’s Milk Melt Vegan Oat Milk Cleanser. This cleanser gently cleanses your skin without stripping and soothes any redness or irritation, making it ideal for those with sensitive or irritated skin. Make sure not to rush! You can also give your neck a mini massage with this cleanser while you’re at it.
Remember to double cleanse
You should also incorporate double cleansing in your evening routine, especially if you wear a full face of makeup or work in a polluted environment. Double cleansing can help remove a day’s worth of makeup as well as pollutants and other impurities from the day. Your second cleanse will then get rid of dead skin cells, excess sebum and remaining impurities, making it easier for other skincare products to absorb into your skin.
Be gentle on your skin
Always remember to use gentle, circular movements when cleansing your face. Use your fingertips to gently massage your skin and use an upward motion to help boost circulation and give your face a natural lift.
Cleansing your skin is the first step in helping to maintain your skin’s health. Follow these steps when cleansing your skin and you can maintain a healthy complexion.
We updated this article in December 2022 to add more information about each featured product, five new product recommendations and expert commentary from Good Housekeeping Institute Beauty Lab scientists and dermatologists.
If you have sensitive skin, nothing is more important than moisturizing to soothe, hydrate and restore skin’s dry, compromised barrier. But you have to be careful to choose the best moisturizer that won’t further irritate your already angry skin. “Sensitive skin is usually irritated by products or environmental factors,” says Marina Isakov Peredo, M.D., a dermatologist at Mount Sinai Hospital. Whether you’re suffering from irritation, dry skin or rosacea, “They all have inflammation in common, which occurs when the skin’s outer barrier layer is damaged due to lack of hydration, overexposure to the sun or contact with irritants.”
To quell sensitivity and uncomfortable skin itchiness, Dr. Peredo explains, “It’s important to treat dehydrated skin with certain specialty products that make it less sensitive. Moisturizing regularly is the best thing you can do to calm sensitive skin and help strengthen its protective moisture barrier.” Luckily, our scientists at the Good Housekeeping Institute have just the picks to guide your search thanks to rigorous testing led by our Beauty, Health & Sustainability Lab. Ahead are the best moisturizers for sensitive skin.

How we tested the best moisturizers for sensitive skin
Good Housekeeping Institute Beauty Lab scientists have a century-long history of testing skincare products for efficacy, including moisturizers from drugstores to high-end brands. When skincare products make moisturization or hydration claims, the Beauty Lab’s chemists use the Corneometer device to gauge how well (or not!) a formula moisturizes skin. We use the machine to measure the hydration levels of testers’ clean skin before application of a standardized amount of product, and again six hours after to calculate how much the product has increased skin’s moisture.
Finally, we send moisturizers to consumer testers around the country who give their feedback on factors such as absorption, texture and scent. We consider all of these data points to find the best moisturizing products out there for all skin types, including sensitive skin. Our picks for best hydrating moisturizers for sensitive skin are either backed by our Good Housekeeping Seal or top-tested or expert picks from the GH Beauty Lab.
What to look for in moisturizers for sensitive skin
When shopping for moisturizers for sensitive skin, the Beauty Lab’s experts recommend looking for formulas that are hypoallergenic (meaning made without ingredients that are potential allergens), and free of potential irritants, like fragrance and alcohol. Also seek out keywords like“calming,” “soothing,” “redness-reducing,” “anti-redness” and “sensitive skin” on product packaging, which indicates the product is formulated for those with reactive skin types.
Why trust Good Housekeeping?
GH Beauty, Health & Sustainability Lab Chemist Danusia Wnek lends over 10 years of formulation, product development, claim evaluation and efficacy testing experience to the Institute. She led the moisturizer studies that the above data is sourced from. Danusia also contributed her scientific expertise on how moisturizers function and broke down what ingredients work best.

If making your dry skin feel supple and hydrated feels like a struggle even despite drowning your complexion in hyaluronic acid and body moisturizers, that’s when a great face moisturizer for dry skin can move the needle. When dry patches, flakes and itchy spots on your face persist, it can mean your skin barrier’s compromised (read: crying for help). To quench parched skin, smooth texture and fight nearing frigid temps, you’ll want a moisture-locking cream to help weather it all.
After years of testing products at the Good Housekeeping Institute, our Beauty Lab experts believe that a well-formulated moisturizer is made with three types of conditioning ingredients: emollients, occlusives and humectants. To help narrow down the search, our chemists have researched hundreds of moisturizers over the years and found the 10 best face moisturizers for dry skin, ahead. In our most recent test, we tested 12 moisturizers with 22 consumer testers per product, collecting data from 240 surveys with questions on qualifications including ease of use, performance and satisfaction. We also measured moisturization in the Lab (a total of 1,920 data points) to see which moisturizers actually hydrate skin over a set period of time.

How we tested best face moisturizers for dry skin
Our Beauty Lab’s team of scientists and chemists evaluated12 facial moisturizers using both consumer and laboratory testing. We know skincare isn’t one-size-fits-all, so we recruited a panel of 264 women with different skin types, concerns and goals to test. We label-masked each moisturizer, so our consumers tested blindly, using the moisturizer daily for two weeks. Testers completed questionnaires rating ease of use, performance and satisfaction. The best six overall scoring products, based on 240 collected surveys and 2,160 data points, were then evaluated in the Lab for moisturization using the Corneometer, a device that measures skin moisture levels. We recommended those top-performing picks above. Others on our list include Seal holders, of which we rigorously evaluated the product’s claims and data.
What ingredients you should look for in the best face moisturizers for dry skin
✔️ Occlusives: These ingredients form a physical barrier on skin that prevents water loss. Sealing in moisture, occlusive skincare ingredients — that includes petrolatum, dimethicone and mineral oil — simultaneously stop irritants from entering skin, which benefits sensitive skin conditions like eczema.
✔️ Humectants: Commonly used in face and body lotions, these water-loving ingredients “help attract water to the skin, keeping your complexion plump and hydrated,” according to Mona Gohara, M.D., associate clinical professor of Dermatology at Yale School of Medicine and president of the Women’s Dermatologic Society. You may recognize skincare humectants in ingredient lists as glycerin, hyaluronic acid, propylene glycol, squalane, urea or sorbitol.
✔️ Emollients: Another category of moisturizer, emollients lightly coat skin, smoothing out dry texture and include ingredients like plant oils and fatty acids.
What ingredients should dry skin types avoid in face moisturizers?
Though we did our due diligence in finding the best moisturizers out there most compatible with dry skin, keep in mind that ingredients like alcohols, fragrances, glycolic acid and salicylic acid can potentially irritate severely dry or sensitive skin. “Even retinol, which has long been famous for its ability to treat acne, wrinkles and other skin conditions, can be too harsh on dry skin,” according to Dr. Gohara. So, if you prefer a moisturizer with the vitamin A derivative, make sure you find one that pairs it with equally hydrating ingredients like the RoC cream (recommended above) does with hyaluronic acid and glycerin.
How often should dry skin types apply moisturizer?
The general rule is to apply moisturizer twice daily: once in the morning and once at night, says Dr. Gohara. “When applying skincare, it’s important to layer your products from lightest to heaviest,” she says. “For most people, especially those with dry skin, that means applying your moisturizer last.” Those with dry skin may be tempted to apply more often, but doing so may result in over-moisturizing the skin, which can result in clogged pores, blackheads and excess oil production, she adds. For best results, the Beauty Lab experts always follow the manufacturer’s instructions on the packaging.
