Banana Boat Issues Recall After One of Its Sunscreens Tested Positive for Cancer-Linked Benzene

  • Edgewell Personal Care Co. is issuing a voluntary recall of three different batches of their Banana Boat Hair & Scalp Sunscreen Spray after finding trace levels of benzene, a known carcinogen, in the products.
  • Customers who bought the affected products should immediately discard the product and can request a refund through the Banana Boat website or by calling 1-888-686-3988.
  • This is the latest product to be recalled due to benzene contamination, after a sweeping recall of numerous sunscreen and deodorants products last year.
  • Benzene may be harmful to your health if absorbed or inhaled repeatedly over time.

Sunscreen is essential for healthy skin — but those who currently have a stockpile for the summer may want to check their products, as some batches from the popular sunscreen brand Banana Boat are now being recalled due to the presence of a cancer-causing chemical.

According to the recall notice shared by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the maker of Banana Boat products, Edgewell Personal Care Co., issued the voluntary nationwide recall last Friday for three batches of Banana Boat Hair & Scalp Sunscreen Spray SPF 30. An internal review found that some samples of the product contained “trace levels” of benzene, a known carcinogen that health experts have long-established may increase cancer risk over time and with repeated exposure.

The three recalled batches of Banana Boat Hair & Scalp Sunscreen Spray SPF 30, 6oz include those with the below lot codes and expiration dates, which can be found at the bottom of the can:

  • Lot code 20016AF with an expiration date of December 2022
  • Lot code 20084BF with an expiration date of February 2023
  • Lot code 21139AF with an expiration date of April 2024

What should I do if I bought the recalled sunscreen?

Consumers who have the affected products above should stop using it and discard immediately, advises the FDA — though it’s important to note that no other batches of the Hair & Scalp product nor other Banana Boat products are included in the recall and can still continue to be used safely.

“To date, Edgewell has not received any adverse events related to this recall,” Banana Boat said on its website. “We are conducting this recall out of an abundance of caution and are advising consumers to stop using the affected product immediately and appropriately discard.”

The brand is also offering reimbursement for those who purchased the affected products. Customers can visit the Banana Boat website where they can fill out a form for reimbursement, or call 1-888-686-3988 for more information.

This content is imported from twitter. You may be able to find the same content in another format, or you may be able to find more information, at their web site.

How did benzene end up in the sunscreen?

Unfortunately, this isn’t the first time that a sunscreen product has been recalled due to benzene. Last summer saw a sweeping nationwide recall of various sunscreen brands after low levels of benzene were discovered in the products. After Johnson & Johnson issued a voluntary recall for some Neutrogena and Aveeno sunscreen sprays in July 2021, the following months also saw Coppertone aerosol sunscreens as well as Secret and Old Spice spray deodorants pulled from shelves.

Even though benzene is not listed as an ingredient in sunscreen or deodorant (including the latest Banana Boat sunscreen), the colorless chemical likely works its way into the items as a byproduct of the manufacturing process. “Benzene is a contaminant that is likely sneaking into some raw materials such as solvents and propellants in aerosol type of products,” explains Good Housekeeping Institute Beauty, Health and Sustainability Lab Director Birnur Aral, Ph.D.

How dangerous is being exposed to benzene?

According to the FDA’s recall notice, benzene is classified as a human carcinogen, and exposure to the chemical — which can occur by inhalation, orally and through the skin — can “potentially result in cancers, including leukemia and blood cancer of the bone marrow and blood disorders which can be life-threatening.” Specifically, the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) says that benzene can cause a shortage of red blood cells, which can lead to anemia, or the loss of white blood cells and changes in the blood levels of antibodies, which can damage the immune system. Benzene is also listed as developmental and male reproductive toxin in California’s Proposition 65.

According to the CDC, benzene is actually ubiquitous in our environment, being found in natural sources like forest fires, gasoline and cigarette smoke — and also commonly used in the manufacturing process for plastics, rubbers, dyes, detergents and pesticides. When it comes to sunscreen specifically, though, it’s likely that potential side effects would be from chronic exposure, over a long period of time.

“While exposure to a product that contains trace amounts of this chemical is unlikely to cause any immediate harm, chronic exposure even at low levels can be of concern,” Dr. Aral says.

While there have not been any reports of adverse reactions related to Banana Boat’s recalled products to date, the FDA advises that anyone experiencing problems or side effects should contact their physician or healthcare provider, and also fill out a digital case report form on their website.

GH Labs Tested Hundreds of Sunscreens: These Are the 14 Best

Here are key factors to consider when picking the right sunscreen for your skin type and needs:

✔️ Broad-spectrum protection “to protect against both harmful UVA/UVB rays,” says Lucy Chen, M.D, F.A.A.D., board-certified dermatologist at Riverchase Dermatology in Florida. Exposure to these wavelengths can lead to dangerous sunburns (a.k.a. skin damage and potentially skin cancers), dark spots and disrupted collagen production, which can bring on wrinkling and sagging.

✔️ SPF 30 or higher: And SPF 30 or greater is best, says David Lortscher, M.D., board-certified dermatologist in San Diego, California and CEO of Curology. And you may want to go even higher: A GH Beauty Lab study found that women on average apply only about 1/3 of the amount of sunscreen needed to achieve the SPF level indicated on the product packaging. So for added insurance, the Lab recommends opting for an SPF 50 or higher.

✔️ Active ingredients: Most often, you’ll have to choose between chemical and mineral sunscreens (or a mix of both) as your main SPF agents:

  • Chemical formulas absorb UV rays and converting them into heat, according to Michael Somenek, M.D., a plastic surgeon in Washington, D.C. “This process allows the body to release the UV rays, which ultimately prevents the skin from burning,” he says. Chemical sunscreens tend to be better for swimming due to their water-resistant nature but while these lotions and sprays are easier to apply with no white residue, you will need to reapply sunscreen more often than you would with a physical or mineral option.
  • Mineral formulas (also called physical sunscreens) form a barrier on your skin that reflects or filters UVA and UVB rays. The dispersed zinc oxide and/or titanium dioxide formulas can be more difficult to spread on your skin and leave behind white cast, but they usually last longer than chemical formulas.

✔️ Formula type: GH Beauty Lab scientists tend to prefer lotions and creams over sprays since “they last on skin longer and are more likely to form a uniform protective coating over skin than sprays,” Wizemann says. In addition, “If your skin is prone to dryness, a cream may be better for you,” Dr. Chen says. As for kids, “Sprays are easy to use, but they might require a second coating, so spray generously,” she notes.

✔️ Water-resistance to stand up against sweaty days or time spent swimming. Heads up: There’s no such thing as waterproof or sweatproof sunscreen. Under current FDA guidelines, there are only “water-resistant for 40 minutes” or “water-resistant for 80 minutes” options. “Sweat- and water-resistant” labeling means the formula maintained its SPF level on testers’ skin in a water bath for the indicated time, says Steven Q. Wang, M.D., a board-certified dermatologist at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in Basking Ridge, New Jersey. Beyond that timeframe, it should be reapplied.

✔️ Your skin type: If you have dry skin, “Look for ingredients like dimethicone, glycerin, aloe and oils and avoid spray or gel sunscreens with alcohol,” advises Dr. Chen. She adds that those with oily skin should opt for a lightweight sunscreen that contains ingredients like silica or isododecane.

We Tested Almost 70 Flat Irons to Find the Best Straighteners for Your Money

Beyond material, “some of the aspects that make a great flat iron include the heating element … a good visual digital thermometer, the quality of the plates and the length of the cord,” says Toye. “The best flat irons are ones that sit comfortably in your hands, have an even heat distribution and selection of temperatures so that you don’t damage your hair,” adds Porsche. Here’s what else to keep in mind:

✔️ Heat settings: A flat iron with multiple heat settings allows for more customization and flexibility when styling since you’re able to select a temperature that works for your hair type/needs. Our expert testers preferred having an option of a temperature range for their flat irons, and Hughes agrees: “It is a must for all hair types. Most irons go up to 430-450ºF,” but that doesn’t mean you should crank up the heat all the way! We recommend always starting off at a lower temperature and increase the temperature as needed since temperatures above 450ºF can cause decomposition of hair’s protein content, causing irreparable damage.

Although there is no scientific guidance on the best temperature ranges to use for different textures, our pros averaged all the temperature suggestions from manufacturers for fine, medium and thick, coarse hair:

  • Fine hair types should stick to 240-330°F
  • Medium to normal hair types can style at 330-370°F
  • Thick, coarse hair can handle temps starting at 390°F and go up from there.

✔️ Plate width and length: “1-inch plates are ideal,” says Hughes. “I think if a plate is too wide it makes the tool more difficult to use or maneuver in the hair.” These narrower plates also make it easier to do detailed styling (like curling, bending or waving) and they’re also better for getting closer to the root of the hair. One exception: if hair is super long and you’re just looking to press hair straight, a 1.5-inch or 2-inch width can make faster work of the task.

✔️ Cord length: If you’re planning on styling hair in a bathroom or close to an outlet, cord length might not be an issue, but if you don’t have an outlet by your mirror, you may want to opt for a longer (or “professional”) length. Cord length in our study varied from 5.6 to 10.8 feet, with an average of 8.1 feet — the longer the cord, the more convenience and range you’ll have. “Also, if the cord swivels, that is a great feature so you can move easier,” says Hughes.

✔️ Auto shut-off: “People are busy and we can all forget to turn off an iron when we are running late, so auto shut-off ensures you some peace of mind,” says Hughes. In our tests, auto shut-off varied from five minutes to two hours, which is handy when you can’t quite remember if you turned the tool off — but we still recommend powering off and unplugging the tool after use to ensure it is completely off.
