The best cashmere jumpers to keep you snug all winter

When it comes to staying cosy in the wintertime, nothing beats a cashmere jumper. Alongside the best cosy cashmere scarves (opens in new tab), cashmere jumpers are a secret weapon in ensuring you remain warm, no matter what the weather may throw at you.

Cashmere is a great fabric to rely on for its warmth but also for its comfort and durability (opens in new tab), and although it may err on the pricier side of things, it is certainly a wardrobe staple you will wear for years to come. If you care for your cashmere in the correct way and follow all the washing instructions, it can be an investment piece that stays in your wardrobe, providing seasons of use.

When investing in a cashmere jumper, it is important to take into account colour and silhouette. If you’re looking for a wardrobe staple, we’d suggest a neutral shade, though it can always be fun to invest in something more statement too!

Of course, the item can be endlessly versatile. While you might be inclined to pair it alongside trousers or jeans and your winter coat (opens in new tab) for a day at the office, styling your jumper alongside a skirt can be great for an evening out. Or throw a jumper over your favourite spring midi dress (opens in new tab) to make feel a little more winter appropriate on cooler days.

Keep scrolling to read about how to care for your cashmere and then shop best cashmere jumpers around.

What is cashmere?

You might know that cashmere is a more luxurious type of wool, and therefore is more expensive, but do you know why? That is because it comes from a specific type of goat, the cashmere goat, which produces finer, softer hair. Each goat sheds its hair once a year, and there isn’t much of it, so it makes the fibre rarer and therefore pricier.

How to wash cashmere:

I’ve ruined many a cashmere jumper because I’ve either been too lazy or ignorant to wash it by hand. So first off, you’ll want to check the care label as some cashmere jumpers are machine washable (M&S do a great line), but others aren’t. Usually, you’ll need to wash them by hand in warm – but not hot – water, or in certain rare cases, dry clean only. Make sure you also lay it flat to dry so that it doesn’t lose its shape, we have a full guide on how to wash and store cashmere here (opens in new tab).

Best cashmere jumpers:

While cashmere is known for being a little more expensive, there are options available for different budgets. On the high street, you’ll be hard-pressed to beat John Lewis & Partners, M&S or Uniqlo, which all have a great range of jumpers and cardigans in various colours, under £100. If you’re looking to invest in a designer piece make sure to check out the selection at Net-a-Porter and MATCHESFASHION.

Keep scrolling to shop our edit of the best cashmere jumpers, including both 100% cashmere styles and cashmere blends.

12 Nail Color Trends You Need to Try This Winter

12 beautiful nail colors you'll want to show off all winter long

courtesy

It’s that time of year again — winter is upon us. And there’s no better accessory to pair with your new chunky knit than a chic, mod mani peeking out from your sleeves. Though we’ll take any excuse to get our nails done, painting nails with a polish also serves a purpose: When it comes to nails in the winter, it’s actually better not to go bare.

“Nails tend to peel and crack more in the winter, so wearing polish actually helps guard them from the conditions,” says Marcy L. Street, M.D., founder and medical director of Doctor’s Approach Dermatology in Okemos, MI. Of course, don’t forget to take care of your cuticles and hands: Stash a hand cream with thick emollients in your purse or at your desk to smooth on throughout the day.

But wearing nail polish isn’t just a preventative measure in the winter. It’s also a fun way to show off your personality and embrace current trends. “Winter is the time for darker, warmer colors. Warm reddish browns are very popular right now,” says Eunice Park, Research and Development Manager from Aprés Nail. “Burgundy is also a classic winter color you can’t go wrong with.” And with more than 20.1 million views on TikTok, the emerging peekaboo nail trend is also set to take off this winter (the trend was also seen during New York Fashion Week). “The peekaboo look has one color/design on the bottom of the nail and another color/design on the top,” Park adds.

Ahead, check out these luxe lacquers to keep your nails in tip-top shape and on trend. Whether you’re searching for winter nail colors for dark skin, fair skin or anything in between, here are the best nail polish colors for winter.

This $15 Face Moisturizer for Dry Skin is All You Need to Weather the Winter Ahead

pattern made of beauty product cream in lavender violet color bottle on pastel lavender background

Iryna VeklichGetty Images

If making your dry skin feel supple and hydrated feels like a struggle even despite drowning your complexion in hyaluronic acid and body moisturizers, that’s when a great face moisturizer for dry skin can move the needle. When dry patches, flakes and itchy spots on your face persist, it can mean your skin barrier’s compromised (read: crying for help). To quench parched skin, smooth texture and fight nearing frigid temps, you’ll want a moisture-locking cream to help weather it all.

After years of testing products at the Good Housekeeping Institute, our Beauty Lab experts believe that a well-formulated moisturizer is made with three types of conditioning ingredients: emollients, occlusives and humectants. To help narrow down the search, our chemists have researched hundreds of moisturizers over the years and found the 10 best face moisturizers for dry skin, ahead. In our most recent test, we tested 12 moisturizers with 22 consumer testers per product, collecting data from 240 surveys with questions on qualifications including ease of use, performance and satisfaction. We also measured moisturization in the Lab (a total of 1,920 data points) to see which moisturizers actually hydrate skin over a set period of time.

Our top picks:

Read on for more info about the most favorable ingredients in face moisturizers for dry skin as well as our complete testing methodology. For all your dry skin concerns, check our best hand creams guide and best lip balms roundup.

How we tested best face moisturizers for dry skin

Our Beauty Lab’s team of scientists and chemists evaluated 12 facial moisturizers using both consumer and laboratory testing. We know skincare isn’t one-size-fits-all, so we recruited a panel of 264 women with different skin types, concerns and goals to test. We label-masked each moisturizer, so our consumers tested blindly, using the moisturizer daily for two weeks. Testers completed questionnaires rating ease of use, performance and satisfaction. The best six overall scoring products, based on 240 collected surveys and 2,160 data points, were then evaluated in the Lab for moisturization using the Corneometer, a device that measures skin moisture levels. We recommended those top-performing picks above. Others on our list include Seal holders, of which we rigorously evaluated the product’s claims and data.

What ingredients you should look for in the best face moisturizers for dry skin

✔️ Occlusives: These ingredients form a physical barrier on skin that prevents water loss. Sealing in moisture, occlusive skincare ingredients — that includes petrolatum, dimethicone and mineral oil — simultaneously stop irritants from entering skin, which benefits sensitive skin conditions like eczema.

✔️ Humectants: Commonly used in face and body lotions, these water-loving ingredients “help attract water to the skin, keeping your complexion plump and hydrated,” according to Mona Gohara, M.D., associate clinical professor of Dermatology at Yale School of Medicine and president of the Women’s Dermatologic Society. You may recognize skincare humectants in ingredient lists as glycerin, hyaluronic acid, propylene glycol, squalane, urea or sorbitol.

✔️ Emollients: Another category of moisturizer, emollients lightly coat skin, smoothing out dry texture and include ingredients like plant oils and fatty acids.

What ingredients should dry skin types avoid in face moisturizers?

Though we did our due diligence in finding the best moisturizers out there most compatible with dry skin, keep in mind that ingredients like alcohols, fragrances, glycolic acid and salicylic acid can potentially irritate severely dry or sensitive skin. “Even retinol, which has long been famous for its ability to treat acne, wrinkles and other skin conditions, can be too harsh on dry skin,” according to Dr. Gohara. So, if you prefer a moisturizer with the vitamin A derivative, make sure you find one that pairs it with equally hydrating ingredients like the RoC cream (recommended above) does with hyaluronic acid and glycerin.

How often should dry skin types apply moisturizer?

The general rule is to apply moisturizer twice daily: once in the morning and once at night, says Dr. Gohara. “When applying skincare, it’s important to layer your products from lightest to heaviest,” she says. “For most people, especially those with dry skin, that means applying your moisturizer last.” Those with dry skin may be tempted to apply more often, but doing so may result in over-moisturizing the skin, which can result in clogged pores, blackheads and excess oil production, she adds. For best results, the Beauty Lab experts always follow the manufacturer’s instructions on the packaging.

Why trust Good Housekeeping?

GH Beauty, Health & Sustainability Lab Chemist Danusia Wnek lends over 10 years of formulation, product development, claim evaluation and efficacy testing experience to the Institute. She led the moisturizer studies that the data, above, is sourced. Danusia also contributed her scientific expertise on how moisturizers function and broke down what ingredients work best.

Associate Product & Reviews Editor Jacqueline Saguin distilled the Beauty Lab’s findings into this best-of face moisturizers for dry skin guide. She regularly collaborates with our beauty experts in writing product roundups. As someone who struggles with severely dry, eczema-prone skin, she contributed her personal knowledge to this roundup, while consulting a board-certified dermatologist for their professional insight.

This Hydrating Hyaluronic Acid Serum Is Your Skincare Savior This Winter

Best Hyaluronic Acid Serums

courtesy

We updated this article in November 2022 to add more information about each featured product, based on extensive testing done by the Good Housekeeping Institute. Our top-rated picks, selected by the Beauty Lab, include new additions from Olay, RoC and Mary Kay.

Consider hyaluronic acid serums the tall glass of water of skincare. Praised for its moisturizing benefits, hyaluronic acid (a.k.a. HA) comes in a variety of skincare products. Often listed as sodium hyaluronate on product ingredient lists, its effects prove both immediate and long-term. “The ingredient conditions skin and works as a humectant that draws moisture into skin,” says Good Housekeeping Institute Senior Chemist Sabina Wizemann. “It helps combat dryness and [dull skin], and restores suppleness.”

Though a gold standard ingredient for hydrating dry skin, hyaluronic acid can work on all skin types, from oily skin to sensitive skin. In narrowing down the greatest options out there, we rounded up our Beauty, Health & Sustainability Lab’s top-tested picks, plus ones that GH staffers and dermatologists use in their own routines. Just a dropper away, give skin its first defense against dryness with the best hyaluronic acid serums, below.

Our top picks:

You can read more about how we evaluate hyaluronic acid formulas in our Lab and consumer tests — plus everything you need to know to shop for your perfect formula — at the end of this guide.

How we chose the best hyaluronic acid serums

Like other face serums we’ve tested, our chemists evaluated hyaluronic acid formulas based on laboratory and consumer tests. We use technical instruments in our Beauty Lab to measure skin changes — such as moisturization, elasticity, wrinkles and pores — after product use. To see how it works on different skin types in real life, our consumer testers try products out and give feedback on their ease of use. Other top-tested picks above, like Seal holders, underwent rigorous evaluation by our scientists who verified product claims. We also included everyday favorites from our GH staffers who struggle with dry or sensitive skin and use hyaluronic acid regularly.

What to consider when shopping for the best hyaluronic acid serums

✔️Keep an eye on concentration: Most hyaluronic acid formulas offer a concentration of 2% or less. “Using concentrations greater than 2% can negatively impact the skin, pulling water out of the skin [and] creating dryness,” Dr. Mack says.

✔️Do double-duty: Pairing well with other skincare ingredients, hyaluronic acid can help reduce side effects such as irritation from ingredients like vitamin C and retinol, according to Dr. Mack.

✔️Cater to your skin type: If you have a drier skin type, Dr. Mack recommends using HA serums twice a day, prior to applying moisturizer — dry skin can benefit from that added boost of hydration. For normal to combination skin types, apply nightly following a retinoid to help soothe any sensitivity.

What do hyaluronic acid serums do for your skin?

Hyaluronic acid can also have anti-aging effects, thanks to its skin-plumping properties. “It acts like a sponge that absorbs water, adding volume to skin,” Dr. Gohara says. Serums, which are lighter weight in texture than face moisturizers like lotions or creams, deliver the hydrating benefits of hyaluronic acid without heaviness and can be layered underneath other leave-on skincare products morning, evening or both.

Why trust Good Housekeeping?

We tapped Senior Chemist Sabina Wizemann for our Beauty Lab’s top-tested picks, included above. For almost a decade at GH, she’s researched, tested and evaluated thousands of products, while also verifying product claims based on her extensive knowledge of skincare ingredients. Collaborating closely with our Institute experts, Beauty Director April Franzino oversees all beauty content at GH. She spearheads our Beauty Awards and regularly writes science-backed roundups. Having dry skin herself, she wrote this original roundup of hyaluronic acid serums. Our Associate Product & Reviews Editor Jacqueline Saguin updated this story with our latest batch of expert-tested picks. She also interviewed dermatologists to answer the most searched questions about hyaluronic acid. Jacqueline also struggles with dry, sensitive skin and considers HA serums a crucial part of her skincare routine.

4 Ways to Make Your Winter Coat More Interesting

I don’t know about you, but I sometimes wonder why I even bother to buy new winter clothes every year – after all, my coat is normally the only thing people see.

When you live in a cold climate, a winter coat is not only a sound investment, it can also be more or less an outfit in itself – especially if your lifestyle requires you to spend time outdoors every day.  For those who love clothes, this can be a little bit frustrating: I’m sure we’ve all had that moment when we’ve just put together an outfit we love, only to realise that no one’s ever going to see it, because it’s going to be covered by a coat most of the time, right? In a bid to get around this, I went through a phase of buying brightly coloured coats, hoping to make my outerwear seem a little more interesting that way. Unfortunately, I soon discovered that brightly coloured coats only really work when everything else you’re wearing is fairly neutral, and because I wasn’t keep on the idea of a hemline or shoe clashing with my coat, I’d just end up reverting back to my trusty camel and black coats – which may be a little less interesting, but which at least work with just about everything.

I do still get tired of wearing the same old coat all the time, though, so here’s are four easy ways to try to make that boring old coat a bit more fun…

01. CHANGE THE BUTTONS

One of the issues with budget outerwear is that the money you’re saving will often be apparent in little details like buttons and belts, which can sometimes look  a little cheap – or just a bit dull, really. Luckily, there’s a quick, inexpensive fix for that, and it simply involves replacing the buttons with higher quality ones: you can pick these up for not too much money on sites like eBay, or even snip them off something you no longer wear.

02. ADD A BELT

Many coats come with their own, self-tie belt, but sometimes switching it for a leather or patent one can instantly elevate the appearance of your outerwear, while experimenting with different colours is an easy way to switch things up.

03. TAKE TIPS FROM BLAIR WALDORF

Any Gossip Girl fans out there? One of the things I used to love about the fashion from the show was Blair’s coats: which were always accessorises with things like necklaces and brooches, to really turn them into an outfit in themselves. For some reason, that’s something I rarely think of doing (and I’m guessing it could get quite annoying if you’re only going to be wearing the coat in question for a short period of time, and don’t really fancy having to remove a string of pearls before taking it off…), but it’s definitely something I intend to try!

04. ADD A SCARF

It’s almost too obvious to mention, but scarves don’t JUST keep you warm in winter – they also look good, too. Experiment with different ways to tie your scarf and use it as an accessory, as well as something warm. An oversized bow or creative braid can look much more stylish than simply stuffing your scarf under your coat.
