Household names, including Cartier, Rolex and Breitling are shifting the focus to clean design and quality materials, creating a host of options under £5k.

It all comes down to your own personal taste, says Lauren Virk, buyer at the UK’s largest luxury watch retailer, Watches of Switzerland. “When considering which timepiece to choose under £5k, it’s imperative you do your research and that you stay true to your own style and needs,” Virk tells Marie Claire UK

“There is a lot of information out there that can guide you in multiple directions and it can be overwhelming, so the main questions I would consider are: do you want a quartz or mechanical timepiece? Do you want a bracelet or a strap? Do you want an everyday timepiece, something a bit sportier, or something to simply make a statement? Something that suits your lifestyle can answer a lot of these questions, so take your time, answer these honestly, and you will choose wisely.”

5 timeless summer wardrobe staples French women (and particularly Jeanne Damas) can

There is no denying that French women are considered some of the chicest people in the world. Their style is beloved (and analysed) all over the globe, prompting many to dissect their go-to outfit formulas in an attempt to emulate their looks. 

And when it comes to chic French women, there are few as revered as Jeanne Damas. The designer is a source of style inspiration to many, having amassed a following of over 1.5 million people and now she is bringing her Parisian sensibilities across the pond, having just launched her first store in London. 

Jeanne founded her brand Rouje in 2016, and while it has been available to shop in the UK, this month marks the opening of the label’s first UK-based store. 

To celebrate the milestone, this week we spoke to Damas to get an insight into how we can all add a little French je ne sais quoi to our wardrobes. 

If you look at Jeanne’s outfits, it is very clear that the designer loves to rely on classic wardrobe staples, and when it comes to items she can’t live without Jeanne lists a set of timeless essentials. “A pair of high-waisted jeans, a trench, a polka dot dress, a white t-shirt and some red lipstick,” are her absolute must-haves. 

In the realm of outfit formulas, this summer she is all about ease. “I like to keep things simple, a wrap dress or a pair of jeans with a nice top!” she explains. Damas often also relies on footwear as the secret to elevating her outfits. “I also love to wear mules as I feel they upgrade even the simplest looks,” she says.  

When asked about the global popularity of the Parisian aesthetic, Jeanne says it’s about simplicity. “I can’t speak for all French women, but for me, it has to do with simplicity and underlining one’s personal allure,” she explained. “With time, I’ve learned what type of clothes I’m comfortable with and what suits my body shape. I never really follow trends,” she adds.

5 Beauty Tips I’ve Learned From the Most Important Women in My Life

As Good Housekeeping’s beauty director, April Franzino has picked up countless pieces of skin, hair, and makeup advice straight from the pros. Still, some of her most valuable beauty wisdom has come from her own family members. Here, she recounts tips from her grandma, mother and aunts that have informed her approach to beauty, confidence and the aging process.

1. A little can go a long way

For my entire life, I’ve watched my grandma do a select few things to look pulled together, no matter her age: Swipe on lipstick, spritz on perfume, curl her hair, and paint her nails. This taught me that you don’t need a complicated beauty routine to feel confident — identifying the small rituals that give you a boost can be more than enough.

2. Find what works for you

Most of my early beauty education came from one of my aunts, who is a professional hairstylist. She was the first to bring me to the beauty supply store to learn about skin, hair, and makeup products, and she also taught me how to use them. One of my first jobs was working at her salon.

Observing her over the years has shown me that, although experimenting is fun at times, you don’t have to try every trend that comes along. You can find the look that’s flattering and comfortable to you and make it your signature. Hers is long, wavy, highlighted hair and natural makeup that looks gorgeous in any setting — a similar aesthetic to the one I’ve adapted over the years.

3. Evolve your routine during menopause

I’ve learned from the women in my family who have gone through menopause that your body and skin’s needs can change drastically during that time. It’s important to adjust your skincare routine accordingly and remember that taking the time to care for yourself is a must.

As I get older, I’m excited to see that more skincare brands are offering research-backed collections created to specifically target the effects of menopause, from sensitivity and dryness to lines and loss of firmness. 4. Consistency is key

At every life stage, making time to take care of yourself physically, mentally, and emotionally is essential for looking and feeling your best as you age. The results of a consistent skincare and self-care routine are cumulative over the years and can help keep your skin and body healthy down the line.

5. Embrace your natural features

My mom has always been unapologetically herself beauty-wise, whether that has meant wearing her curly hair full and natural, or going makeup-free and showing off her skin. Her example helped me feel comfortable in my unique beauty, including my wavy hair texture, the bump on my nose, and my bare skin — dark circles, dryness, and all. Most importantly, all of the women in my life have shown me that, whatever your age, true beauty comes through your spirit and soul.

I’m a health editor who runs marathons for fun, so I’ve tested all of the running trainers below for you over 5km, 10km, and half marathon distances. Keep reading for an honest review of which are worth your investment – and which aren’t.

Why investing in a pair of the best women’s running trainers is so important

Yeah, surprisingly enough your old Converse aren’t the best bet for your morning miles (that said, they’re on our round-up of the best weightlifting shoes (opens in new tab) for a reason).  Wearing incorrect trainers can increase your risk of injury and encourage poor running form.

Think about it: if you wear super flat Converse for your 5km, your foot arch won’t have adequate support, your joints won’t have proper cushioning as your body hits the floor, and your hips, knees, Achilles, and tendons will likely have to work harder to over-compensate. End result? Likely injury (opens in new tab), if you run regularly (aka three times a week or more).

What should I look for in a women’s running shoe? 

  • Adequate cushioning – When you hit the floor during a run, you’re putting as much as three times your body weight through your foot. Think about that for a second – it’s a lot. Making sure you’ve got proper cushioning underfoot is vital.
  • Appropriate weight – Again, this one’s fairly common sense and worth thinking about pre-investing in running trainers. The lighter your shoe, the easier it’ll be for you to move quickly in them, right? You’ll be smashing that 5km PB in no time. That being said, if you’re a distance or marathon runner (opens in new tab), making sure you’ve opted for a shoe with proper support for the mileage is key, so it may be best to opt for a slightly heavier shoe.
  • Designed for the right terrain – In short, are you someone who’s going to be running on pavements home from work or heading out to the countryside for steady miles come the weekend? If it’s the former, invest in road shoes; the latter, trail shoes. Road shoes are more cushioned, to protect your body from the impact of the concrete, and trail shoes have more grip and support, for muddy trail routes.
